I'm in agreement with g40jon. The most fun to drive early Polo I've driven was a GT. I'm sure you know the specs, 1272 mpi engine with 75bhp. Coupled to the low ratio differential these have makes for a great drive especially on the back roads. The G40 I had was way quicker (dyno'd @ 181bhp!) but you obviously had to be a LOT more careful. Essentially the same car but it felt quite different. The mk2 Polo will be fine with an ABD conversion, the 1.4 engine is less rev happy but a smoother more torquey unit. Good luck with it Tim.

Absolute top work on those rear arches , also impressed with the fuel tank refurb, it's a peach of an Astra now, as much as we all love modified cars it's nice to see a basic original spec car preserved like this I'll second the above. Soooperb work Darren.

Blimey £350??!! That is a lot of car for the money. Definitely agree on spraying the sills red, I'd do the front spoiler too. Keep us posted.

You must get some pics up of the awful sounding RHD steering and pedal conversions! DAAAAMN, this has got some rust on it and fecking loads of filler too! It's always worse when previous owners have bodged up rather than repaired properly. What is it with some people? Good luck with this mate, I reckon you're gonna need it!

from the research ive done, the late manta exclusive engine was also know as the i200? I200 wasn't a different engine, just a trim option from the Opel tuning company Irmscher. It was from these that the Exclusive models trim was developed. The only Manta not to have a CIH engine was the 1.8 OHC powered GT/J, Berlinetta and Exclusives. Every other Manta was either 1.6, 1.9 or 2 litre carb versions of the CIH. When the GTE was released it just used a fuel injected version of the 2.0 litre engine.

If it's from a Manta GTE it'll be a CIH not the SEH.

Sorry, I haven't got any info on fitting a Manta engine into a Viva. However, I do have plenty of experience of the CIH engine. TBH, it's not a unit I personally would want to fit into anything if I was looking at uprating a car. They're heavy, fairly unrefined, don't produce much power and aren't exactly the most economical engine. Bit of a boat anchor really! Obviously a Manta GTE spec. one with 110 bhp is gonna be about as good as it gets without tuning. The matching Getrag 5 speed box is ok but is fairly large and again quite heavy. First gear is pretty short too, though the transitions between 3rd, 4th and 5th are much better. The 2.4 CIH from the Frontera makes only a bit more power but is even less inclined to rev. The couple I've been in were about as lively as I am when I first get up in the morning! They were reasonably torquey but even less refined than any of my Manta GTE's. Probably not what you wanted to hear! However they are only my opinions. Personally I'd be looking for something lighter, more modern and with a better power/economy ratio. this might start a bit of an argument....BUT!!!!!! I think the mk2 looks better than the mark 1 ooerrr I think I'm a marked man now :/ I gotta agree with the above. I've always loved mk2 Escorts. That is 2 stunning Escorts you own now, that is just not fair! The pinto is so much more torquey and makes for a more effortless drive than a pushrod. Personally I'd loose the Cibies, I always think they clutter the front of any car. Lovely car mate, get some more pic up - preferably with the Ghia.

Cut a Half inch paintbrush to you have approx 10mm of hair left,apply it lightly and leave to dry....prime over it and then rub down and you can get a dammed good smooth finish Dave Thanks for that Dave. I wasn't aware you could rub down seam sealer, I thought it always remained too soft and rubbery to sand it? Cobblers, you reckon the Upol stuff will work better? Might have to try and get some of that then. I assume it'll do the same job and is fully over paintable like seam sealer? Thanks for the fast responses, Richard.

Yeah, if you're flushing the weld off afterwards then it's best to leave a small gap when butt welding. Less weld ground off the stronger the joint.

Can any of the professional/experienced painters out there tell me the best method of neatly applying seam sealer? I've got some Grey Stripe brush on stuff but I had hoped it would go on a bit smoother. Even in the warm conditions today it was really difficult to apply leaving very heavy brush marks, with a gloss top coat on it'll look wibblepoo. I'm trying to get the neatest finish possible prior to respraying my engine bay. Is it safe to warm the sealer prior to application or is there another secret for a smoother finish? Congratulations on reaching the milestone of sorting all the rust out. I've been following this epic rebuild since I first joined RR. It is one of my favourite builds even though a Thames campervan isn't the sort of thing I'd normally be that interested in. The way you have gone about the repairs is superb, many of which will never be seen but still repaired to the highest standards. Keep up the superb work Kev, Cheers, Richard.

Thanks for the extra info guys. I had been thinking about this and decided that it would be a far neater installation without any pressure drop issues to find one long slim oil cooler. The previously mentioned BMW ones were silly money even second hand. Hillmanjames, I've been looking on ebay for suitable coolers and saw P38 Landrover ones but these are a bit too long, thanks anyway mate. However I have found that certain Saab's have an oil cooler which I think will do the trick nicely, at about half the price of the Beemer one. Thanks anyway chaps, much appreciated.

That looks absolutely mint. What's the story behind it, has it been restored or is it a time warp car with ultra low mileage? The paint looks new such is the depth of shine and overall finish. I reckon it could do with a six clock instrument set apart from that everything else is pretty much perfect. Thanks for posting the pics up.

The standard of that repair work is superb mate. Unfortunately in the majority of cases that'd of been a few ill fitting plates with filler covering bird sh1t welding. It's great to see someone taking the time and obviously having the skills to do thorough and proper repairs. Give yourself a pat on the back mate. It'd be nice to see some decent pics of the finished car. I like the Corrado especially in VR6 form.

I like the wheels, I'd keep them and refurb them. Your plans are spot-on IMO. Give the interior a good clean then I'd go for a bit of lowerage and colour code the bottoms of the bumpers (I'd leave the top bit's black) Doesn't need anything daft doinf to it to make it stand out I agree with the above, especially with regards to half coding the bumpers. Less is more with this.
