Sweet talk/get to know someone at Eurocarparts and get trade prices.
Picked up 20 litres of 10w40 Semi Synthetic a few days ago for £25.40, that's about £5.60 per gallon.

Hi, I'm after a Mk2 Polo. Not fussed about Breadvan or Coupe. Location isn't too much of an issue as I can have the car collected.
Anything considered, what have you got?
Thanks

Use all of the Polo parts and swap them into the ABD. It's the same block, just a different crankshaft stroke and a better cylinder head.
It sounds like you've been reading about AFH'a- you shouldn't need to swap the pulleys or thermostat housing. But if they are different, just put all your 1.0 stuff on the 1.4, it will fit.
You won't get the ABD's full potential with all the 1.0 bits but it'll be a hell of a lot faster. At a later date you can swap your throttle body and ECU to 1.3 items from another mk2f polo.

Buy more cars that I won't necessarily get attached to, enjoy them while I can, then move onto something else.
Sounds odd, but I've already got a long-term project that I've nearly finished and I'm not old enough to insure 'proper' cars

I think I've solved this- I've had plenty of early mk2 that came from the factory with a top fill rad, and never had any issues. I've confirmed for definite that cars with a top fill need the hoses swapping!
Just swapped them round, as before the bottom hose was going to the thermostat. Now the bottom hose goes into the block, so as you fill up the rad it actually fills the entire cooling system, not just the rad and the bottom hose until it meets the thermostat.
So filling from empty, it took around 3 litres before reaching the 'full' mark on the rad, not about 1 litre as before. With the hoses how they were arranged before (wrong), you'd have to fill the rad up to get the water level to reach the top hose, where it would try and trickle down the top hose and into the block, which is why there's always a massive amoutn of air in the system still.
Cheers for the help!

The panel that the expansion tank mounted to has been removed to allow for clearance for the DCOE carbs.
The radiator I am using was standard fitment on the earlier version of my car, with no other parts changed. I've actually owned a car that used the same radiator, although I never had to deal with the cooling system.

I was sort of hoping that would work. But surely the level at the radiator cap would stay full even if the system wasn't actually full, as it is not the highest point?

Evening,
I recently rebuilt my Mk2 Polo, and installed a top-fill radiator. The new rad has a cap on it, whereas the old one used an expansion bottle mounted to the bulkhead.
The old expansion bottle had an outlet at the bottom which went to the thermostat housing, and a small inlet at the top that was connected to a small outlet at the top of the rad.
The new rad has no provisions for this, so I blanked off the now unused inlet on the thermostat housing. The expansion tank is no longer present.
The issue is that the fill-point (rad cap) is now lower than the bleed point on the heater matrix. The old fill-point (expansion bottle cap) was higher than this.
The only way I have been successful in eliminating air in the system is to use a 2l bottle full of coolant, swiftly inverted and shoved in the rad. Squeezing the bottle forces the coolant into the system. With the heater matrix bleeder (highest point) open, the coolant eventually squirts out and I then close the bleed screw.
The thing I can't get my head around is that there is surely no room for expansion, as the rad is not the highest point and will therefore be completely full before the coolant comes out of the bleed screw. This also makes it impossible to check the coolant level, doesn't it?
Early models of the Mk2 polo use this same radiator, so it obviously can be made to work. I'm sure if there's even a problem, but it just seems like an odd concept to have the radiator cap lower than the highest point in the system.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry for the lack of any pics for those who were waiting! I'm back home with the car next week, I'll get some new pics as loads has been done. For now though, I've just found these from back in the summer. Colour coding came out pretty good. You'll probably notice 2 lovely, loud, shiny and Italian additions to the engine that I don't think I mentioned. Since the pictures was taken the loom has been re wrapped and installed, the ignition system all done, the driveshafts in etc. The brakes are all done too, so it actually goes and stops for the first time in nearly three years. It also sounds the absolute nuts.
