I have got that book by Ron champion, build a buggy for under £100 (yeah right!) I will keep it simple, I have got some 40mm box section steel to make the basic chassis, its a bit heavy but I am thinking my Nephew will grow fast and this kart could last him a long time if I make it strong and big enough to fit a bigger seat and engine and move the pedals forward when he grows up a little.
I am tempted to attempt a rudimentary rear trailing arm suspension using a small motorbike shock/spring unit I have.
I am looking for some austin mini hubs to fit these rear wheels to 4x4"pcd.
I am planning to weld a v belt pulley to the old moped wheel hub (brake drum) after I cut the spokes and outer rim off to drive the axle.

I want to make a gokart for my nephew, I noticed a few mopeds in my regular scrapyard and got this honda melody for £30. It was missing the front wheel and drive belt cover which was a bit of a shame I took the engine and loom out and threw the rest away. I took it apart a bit and gave it a bit of a clean up as it was really filthy, looks like some kids had nicked it and thrashed it round a field or something. The best thing about using a moped is that everything I need is there, wiring, control cables, clutch and brake (built into rear hub), I can even keep the lights to use on the kart! I got some wheels today, the front ones are barrow wheels (red) and the rears are trailer wheels, I got them quite cheap but had to buy one new rear wheel to make up the set, the spoked wheel is off the moped. My mate came over today and we put it in the vice and connected it all up to try it out, It started after about 3 cranks! even with its dirty old spark plug, thats Hondas for you! Since the vid I have stuck the exhaust on and sorted the throttle cable out and now it runs smoother and starts on the button!

I had 2 Rover 200 (wedges) a 213 S and 216 vitesse (woo) they were both very good I thought.
The 213 got scrapped after 3 years. Due to me never changing the oil, the distributor ate itself, one day the car stopped and when I took the backplate off the dizzy it was full of alu swarf. I put a new dizzy on and it was ok after that for a bit.
216 was used by my sisters BF while I was out of the country, it was a great car, full spec - the AC, pretty quick too, when I got back after 9 months he had not taxed or MOT'd it and continued to use it even though the brakepads were completely worn down to the backplates. (KNOBEND) scrapped.

hmmm, thanks for the tips, I will try putting a new liner, I recently replaced the swan neck, (I think this is the third one) the bloody thing kept coming out of the trigger/handle thing until I glued it in place and a new one improved results a lot...
I was thinking that the drive wheel spindle or motor mounts went bent/loose???

I went to see a mate of mine last weekend, we did some grinding on his 740T5 project to clean up some rusty spots here and there, we found a small hole in the bottom of the chassis rail and he went to borrow a friends welder and came back with a proper, professional MIG. The welds went on soooo much better than with my hobby MIG (Clarke 150te). We did some practice welds to set it up how we wanted it and I couldn't believe how much easier it was to get a decent, solid bead. The wire feed was super smooth (unlike my Clarke that kind of pulses the wire out) and there was loads of shield gas coming out)
I guess its no surprise when you look at the price difference between the two machines.
Though I did have a problem when welding upside down (first time I've tried it) When the wire hit the metal and melted, it just kind of fell off in a ball and most often, went down into the shroud. Is that normal? Is there any way round this apart from turning the car over?
There are a couple of awkward patches to do in the floors in the area of the forward jacking points and outriggers. Is it best to weld these from inside the car?
PS, good idea on the How to weld thread.

LOL
The first time I changed a headgasket on my old 940 (the first time I got serious at working on cars) I followed the haynes to the letter, It had me removing all kinds of curse word that can be left well alone, radiator, starter motor etc etc... when The job wa done I was trying to work out why I had to remove it all, still don't know. I mean all you need to do is pull the manis, slip the timing belt off, remove valve cover and unbolt head.

The beauty of it is the only wiring you need to mess with is the ballast resistors, (one wire for each injector) and if you use high impedance injectors you don't even need to do that, its plug and play as long as you get a 240 with lh2.4 efi (same as a 940) 1990 onwards, look for the little lambda badge on the grill and catalyser emblem on the rear.
vid will be back up for a short time tonight, check back soon

Saw this for sale on the side of the road this weekend along with some other junk. I don't think I will use it but its just nice, it is a Union pillar drill, it has an arm at the top operated by a cam built into the drive gear that pulls on another gear to lower the chuck as the drill operates. Gave it a bit of a clean up, I was thinking about dismantling it ans painting all the cast parts with black hammerite, but I kind of like it how it is.

After helping my mate to convert from carbs to LH I can say its not soooooo hard as I thought, It has to be easier than MS, but MS has far more potential for tuning and mods.
