Running it with the rad cap off doesn't always help - if there is an airlock in a higher part of the system just leaving the cap off won't shift it. When you refill some systems you need to do it at literally a trickle or they'll airlock. But even then if the heater was drained then refilling the system via the radiator or header tank won't always refill the heater matrix which is why I tend to fill them via the heater pipes.
You set the heater to hot when refilling the system as it allows the coolant to enter the heater - and / or air to leave the heater. If you leave it on cold then on some systems the empty heater doesn't fill so it's guaranteed to lock.

Maybe I’ve missed something said so far but it sounds like the heater is air locked, easy to happen when replacing the water pump. The heater can sit higher than the expansion tank so not clear an airlock. I often fill the system via the heater supply pipe to avoid this. Did you check the heater control was set to hot when you refilled the system?

Much as this is true and sensible and all that I must confess that there is a certain panache to towing a disreputable trailer. Some of the contraptions I have towed over the years and lost parts thereof along Her Majesty's highway. There is nothing so sad as those silly little trailers they sell at Halfords. You want a box made out of old pallets atop a chassis welded from angle iron running on an old Moggy Minor back axle. Matching lights either side definitely loses points. Purists will still use a proper 2 inch ball hitch. The real purist will use a 50mm ball with a 2" hitch for extra wobblyness! Oh, and if anyone found the light unit, complete with metal cage and brackets that fell off my (widened caravan chassis'd) trailer many years ago, I'm sorry, and no I don't need it back! Oh yes - one of my boat trailers had a 2 inch hitch running on a 50mm ball - made a wonderful noise as you tootled along.

The ones that advertise 'Pull Me' by running with shoddy trailers with mudgards hanging off, lights not working, trailered vehicle poorly secured, tails of the ratchet straps flying about, number plate made from a cornflake box with the writing of a 2 year old on it and the whole outfit ragged down the road with the trailer snaking behind the tow vehicle is just asking for the book to be thrown at them. Much as this is true and sensible and all that I must confess that there is a certain panache to towing a disreputable trailer. I came across this at the Riverside Museum in Glasgow (great place to visit, I think it used to be called the Museum of Transport) I guess it was fitted inside the vehicle being tested and measured the braking force exerted on the paper graph. Anyone able to confirm or correct that assumption?

What about water out of a dehumidifier? I use the water out of ours to top up leisure batteries and they last for years.
I've never noticed any nuns or kittens being discharged from the unit so I reckon they must still be in the water. Maybe that's why my water pump is squealing?

The lack of a coolant temperature gauge, this really annoys me.

I've had a few cars with horrendous static problems so I can see why people want to do something, but an old bit of thin chain is all that's needed.
I guess lowering suspension struts are bolted on?
The best....well much as I dislike extra lights bolted up front it's got to be done. My headlight bulbs are P45t fitting available in up to 40W which makes country lanes guesswork.

The other way round - a mate sold a car on ebay the other day, then the buyer contacted him to say they thought they'd bid too much and would he drop the price.
When I sold my caravan the guy rolled up to collect it in a car without a towbar fitted. These are the kind of muppets that inhabit the world of ebay.
I sold some heaters a few weeks ago and the guy asked for my phone number so we could arrange collection - only ebay now blocks people messaging phone numbers via their message facility. So how are people meant to make the necessary arrangements.
I rarely use it these days, and never ever ever for buying selling cars.

I had to do a temporary bodge when our daughter's exhaust fell of one dark wet night and all I had to hand was standard Isopon body filler. I stuck it back together with that and told her to bring it back next week and I'd weld it up.
Nine months later the Isopon is still holding it together. I never realised it would take the heat to be honest but it's still rock solid.

Bonnet closed - whatever engine is under there.
Having said that an open bonnet at the side of the road I can never resist.

Not well! His insurance (Tesco) were totally unhelpful and refused to insure him for a car he doesn't own. So the solution is he will drive our daughter's car (on which he is a named driver) and I'll add her to my insurance. It's easier to add her than him as I have all her details on the policy from when she was a named driver before. But thanks for the suggestions & advice guys - appreciated.

Just a general comment regarding driving another persons car on your insurance using the 'any vehicle not owned by the insured' clause. A couple of years ago I had to collect a vehicle for my father. My insurance stated that I was covered to drive any vehicle not owned by me but I thought that I would confirm this with my insurers anyway. Apparently the insurance covers the driver (me) only when inside the car. Once I stepped outside the car the owners policy covers the vehicle. Fine if there is already the owners insurance on the vehicle but if it is not insured, as soon as you step out of the vehicle it is completely uninsured. If this were to happen on the public highway the vehicle would be liable to seizure and the owner liable to prosecution for having an uninsured vehicle on the highway. Be warned. The policies I've seen that allow you to drive other cars not owned by you say that you're covered 3rd party only so long as the car has valid insurance in place, so if the car wasn't insured you can't use your own insurance to drive it. I found that out when trying to help an elderly neighbour - her son who lives away thought he was being helpful by cancelling her insurance, which then meant I couldn't drive it to the MOT place for her on my insurance. It's got tax/MOT/insurance until October so it's just a case of tiding him over whilst they get married and he has time to replace his own car. If it passes the MOT in Oct and he wants it he can have it. It doesn't owe me anything.

Thanks for the comments. It's a car that owes me nothing so I'm quite happy to see it put to use if it helps him out.
I'd forgotten about his insurance covering him 3rd party, I'll ask him. So long as he's covered 3rd party I'm not worried about the car. If I wrecked it myself I wouldn't even bother claiming - not worth it.
The alternative is I just give it to him anyway and he insures it.

Silly Sunday evening question - because I can't ring the insurance people until they open tomorrow....
Our daughter is getting married in a couple of weeks so finances are a bit tight. Her fiance's car has just failed the MOT and it's not really worth repairing, so he needs a car for work. I have a spare car with MOT & tax until October which would see him through while he gets things sorted.
The question is about insurance:
Either I add him to my policy (probably the more expensive way to do it)
or - can he simply contact his insurers and get them to cover it?
I've never tried to insure a car I didn't own myself - is that likely to cause any kind of problem?

Nice spot - thank you for sharing.
Picking up on Monday. I landed one of their professional tool chests a while back and I've still got a bit of space left in it.Most of my tool are their pro range and they've been brilliant. The only socket I snapped - and I was giving it some stick - was replaced without quibble.
