As rallyboy says what are your plans for use?
id have alook at the blue book if your planning on competing before you start making too many mods, (if your going to do any type of historic events or road rallies)
really do like these things, i had a 1100cc samba for a while, never got it on the road however, I was young no funds and nowhere to build it properly.

Have you considered a Bedford j Type for the cab? (not the right sort of back end but you get a good idea of the style) American (ish) styling on a British body. Having said that It's probably easier to find a Chevy than a Bedford in the UK these days! Then again there's also this:- Based on a modern chassis (don't know which) UK based and works for it's living too. That bottom one is up the hill from me. Owned by Roberts motor bodies in Sheffield. Across the valley from me, small world

most of the rally lads I know who run XE motors tend to carry a few spare crank sensors...ususally tie wrapped to the strut brace.

oh and what is meant by a 'gasless mig welder'? A horrible piece of equipment only suitable for welding farm gates in a windy field in March, producing weld that look like they have comne from the rear end of a pigeon. (yes some people may get some good results, but really gasless wire was invented for heavy industry i.e hard facing, particular weld material compositions, pipe work etc) The amount of weld spatter produced and possible inclusions in the weld make it frustrating to use on bodywork with a hobby mig (yes ive used it in both industry and hobby applications) oh and the Fumes it gives off are far worse than normal MIG. You'll get far neater and more pleasing results with a mig with Co2 or Co2/Argon gas. don't go for the cheapest option (the smaller SIP sets issues are well documented on various forums). A decent mig will pay for itself in no time (in terms of quality of work and the speed in which you will pick it up) as GrumpyNortherner says start small, the rust WILL be bigger than it looks so make sure you clean off a good area, with a wire knot wheel, paint removal wheels are brillaint as they don't take any metal off.

How quickly can you go from stripped shell to painted shell? If the answer is "not very", then don't have it stripped or dipped. not quite, you can get it coated after dipping in a protective primer. But this will be at an extra cost. peronally id get it ont he body spit and have it media blasted if your workshop is as dry as it looks in the pictures.

I use solidworks for doing my geometry along with some excel spreadsheetery. It's works quite well as you can set up some simulations and watch the model move. Seeing what happens in 3d is also quite useful as you get a nice visual indication of scrub etc. I also got a rudimentary excel sheet from the locost builders site ages ago. It's quite good to see in a basic format. I'm a Solidworks-ist, will have to have a play round at some point. never had much use to use the simulation side - should be interesting.
