Ah Peugeot. You once knew all there was to know about making small, light cars with tiny engines that where all about putting an enormous grin on the drivers face. What the hell happened? Accountants. People wanting all the luxo mod cons in a shoping trolley. No more Homologation specials needed.

Triumph Spitfire 1300....... Another idea I like but didn't even know they did a 1.3. Thought they were 1.5. What year would a 1.3 be? 1275cc A-series. regarding Mazda engines my google Fu has tuned this up: Supposedly the Duratec and Mazda B series engine have the same bolt pattern, so a 1400 duatec might bolt up. www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=914923the Mazda Z series engine is a development of the B- series engine. and comes in 1400cc (91bhp) a few on ebay for reasonable money and there is a possibility of same mounts & bolt patterns. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazda_Z_engineor go down the 1400cc zetec and type 9 route, make some engine mounts to suit and run it on carbs.

I really miss my old Rallye, I'd fuppin love another but they're really hard to get hold of now and about 3x the price since I sold mine ten years ago. Is this still a 1.3? They sound fantastic! Mine ended up with a valver in after the 2nd rallye engine started knocking - Faster, but just not the same... I miss yours too Dave, had a lot of fun tearing about in them. you'll have to come out for a blast in the flying blackboard once its back together. I've had a couple of them, cracking little cars, 1.3 motor is a peach, especially when bolted to the origonal box with the correct final drive. current 106 is a proper mongrel, part Rallye, Gti, Xsi,106 Diesel, picasso, 306, Saxo..

Our old Passat B5 estate aka the Turkey gatherer..
It was so worn (a hard 200k+miles), every suspension component was goosed, when you tried to "hustle" it down a country lane, you didnt actually know if you'd get chronic understeer, hilarious and bowel movement inducing oversteer, or both at once all with a healthy dose of insane bodyroll, the front brakes regulary set on fire, due to sticky calipers. Then a headlight used to fall out and dangle on the wires randomly.
The interior could be described as discusting, when we got it every pocket/bin/ashtray/recepticle/flat surface was covered with cigarette ash & stubs it stank.
Then the door release broke, so you hand to wind the window down to open said door, but the also when it rained and you went over a bump in the road the sunroof opened and windows that worked went down.
Why the Turkey gatherer you ask? well one front pully on the TDI engine was so warn / wonkey the serpanitne belt made a very distinctive hi pitched gobbblegobblegobblegobble.
still for £200 it served us for a year as a mobile skip / van when we started renovating the house.

It's all about HAZ (heat effected zones) and heat treatment of the tube IIRC. I think the US & European finished grades of CroMo will differ (one needing heat treatment the other not).
I've MIG welded a CroMo cage with no issues.
