Let's for arguements sake say 1990 as the year. Which would you choose out of the standard models (nothing ZX or GT4 or tweaked)? Has anyone owned both and can comment on which they preferred?

I owned both. The Sunny was nearly new and the Celica was bought much later. Both cars are not bad but I found the Celica the better car to drive. Not much faster but better on the road, corners etc. Both were automatics. I think that the Sunny was a 1.5 GL and the Celica a 2.2? ST. The Celica a 1993 model had a few more extra's as well. The Sunny offered more room in the back. The Celica had a sunroof that worked great but did limited it's head space a bit. I thought that the Sunny was a bit better on fuel but from memory a bit more noisy. The Celica felt all up as a more solid car.

Well I 'test drove' a celica like the one above today, but pulling away in 4th gear made me somewhat less enthusiastic about being the owner of it!
Whichever came up first reasonably priced and in good condition I would go for now tbh.

If it's the same engine as my old mr2, they start to wake up higher in the rev range.

Just pulling away from a stop in 4th mate (manual gearbox). I didn't drive it more than 10 feet tbh after experiencing that. Apparently it had had a new clutch (with bill from Mr Clutch) at the beginning of September for £400.

to be fair no car is going to inspire confidence if you pull away in 4th, thats what the previous 3 gears are for
