Hey Y'all, I've bought myself a GTM Libra. All good!
It's got a 1600 K-Series with a CVT autobox. Erm, not good. It sounds like a herd of highly perturbed cows.
So I need advice and options for an engine swap - here's where I'm at.
K-Series Trophy 160vvc with PG1 box. Cheap, light and the easiest, but HGF and not too powerful.
Honda B16, B18, H22, K20.
Clio 182 but I’ve heard the gearboxes are chocolate.
Mitsi 4a Mivec
Any other ideas? I don’t want turbo and a v6 would be difficult as it’s not a v6 shell.
180-200 bhp is what I’m aiming for.
Cheers,

Thanks for the input guys. I'd not really thought about Fords - apart from I know the Sigma 1.7 is only 150bhp ish. KV6 - GTM did a version to fit this with a modded bulkhead so I know it won't fit. Alfa, hmmm, maybe heavy, maybe too big but I'll take a look. 2ZZ I have a feeling will be ££££s but again, I'll take a looksee.

Looking at pics... Would a Scooby flat 4 not fit? Lots of bang for buck there and very reliable. Plus when the go-slow-panzy-grandad-itis wears off you can tune it hard.

Scrooby definitely not, the trans would be hanging out of the back through irreplaceable bodywork. The 2zz is a great call though. Since I last looked at them they've got a lot cheaper. With a bit of luck an mr2 gearchange will fit straight on it too.

rover 75 1.8 turbo k-series. keep the engine lineage & nanjing had sorted out the k-series by then. Pretty much what I would suggest but instead get one from the MG6, all the problems fixed with new block internal design, very light, 160hp standard, turbo tuneable and it will bolt straight in.

I'm running a 160 VVC on a PG1 box in my Libra, it makes for a nice pokey and well balanced car with a very flat torque curve.

Always fancied a Libra, I would say go for any of the engines that are alloy block rather than cast to keep the weight balance excellent. Near all 2l engines will pretty easily pull off 180bhp NA if you switch to a set of throttle bodies, Honda's better due to good RPM tolerance as stock but others aren't too hard to strengthen a bit for more RPM when sticking NA.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I've settled with a Toyota 2ZZ
Apart from one little niggle - the Mitsubishi 2.0 v6 from the FTO. In Mivec form the power figures appear quite impressive - but all reports on the net say they are really flat and not a good engine. Is this only because of the FTO chassis and weight or is there more to it?
Cheers.

I think the reason for the flat feeling is the noise doesn't match the take-off. It doesn't surge, but it does have a steady progression. Often folk mistake a lag and surge for power ("upgrading" a Beetle with a 009 chucking the vac advance in the bin and making the engine run worse and mistaking the timing coming right up the revs making the engine surge for power increase being a case point) I suspect if you saw a rolling road readout you would see a very flat and level graph compared with its peers (sort of the whole point of the second cam and the sudden change in note, I assume?).

I'd go with the VVC K-Serie engine myself too.
As for the Clio engines the gearboxes are fine. It's abuse that kills them, which they don't take too well but many have lasted well into 100k without a hitch

Copy the elise conversion there is a duratec to rover pg1 gearbox adaptor that makes it a proven route, the 2.3 has lots of potential if you want to tune it.

For me it's duratec all day, plenty of transverse gear box's available from mondeos or focus. Will see 180whp on early engines and a bit more on later, engines are cheap and plentiful. I also have a set of dth throttle bodies for sale to suit

On a side note. Who gets an awesome little sports kit car like that then puts a dog turd of a engine and gearbox combo like that in it? Honda Accord/Stream 2.0 155bhp, Accord 2.3 170bhp, Accord 2.4 204bhp, full donor transaxle.
