I’m going to view one this weekend, can you see much of the sill area where they rust with the plastic covers on? I’m thinking sort of from underneath if you get me, or do they have to be removed? The cover completely covers the sill from the door step right down to the seam with the floor. I think this is the problem. When I took the cover off, it was full of really fine wet mud that couldn't get out.

Some good info there guys, thanks. Anything look too scary with this one? I’ve looked at the test history, doesn’t seem to be anything a miss. It’s only 15 min from me as well www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373506646873I'm guessing from the hideous cover that the leather on the wheel is knackered. Easily fixed with gliptone products. Other than that, sills, sills, sills. The seller most likely won't let you take the covers off, he'd rather flog it to someone less knowledgeable. Look at the pinch weld and floor edge, and for bubbling on the door step at the back. Also look to see if any of the clips have mysteriously fallen out.

Other than rust, the A/C can be flakey. It can be the valve under the bonnet, the module, or the wiring. It means you can't fully shut off the heat. I never got to the bottom of mine and resorted to clamping off the heater hoses in summer. That's not an aircon issue it's the Ford heater valve previously mentioned by daklone item 4. Cheap enough to replace and fairly straightforward once you have worked out how to release the hoses. I'd say it was a climate control issue if I was being really precise. Mine had an invoice in the history for a wiring repair and replacing the valve didn't fix it. There's a website: jaguarclimatecontrol.com/diagnose/I was about 3/4 of the way through when I sold it. Facelifted cars do have an electronic handbrake. One other thing, use your cruise control on quiet motorways. You can think you're doing about 80, then a glance at the speedo shows it's over 100.

I loved mine but chronic rot in the sills and floor meant it had to go (to the my local garage owner who rebuilt it). It's still around having done probably 170k now. With the sill covers on, the only visible rust was an area the size of a 50p on one wheelarch. Perfect car to drive home when you've had a really curse word day. I still regret parting with it. Other than rust, the A/C can be flakey. It can be the valve under the bonnet, the module, or the wiring. It means you can't fully shut off the heat. I never got to the bottom of mine and resorted to clamping off the heater hoses in summer. Things not to panic about: 1. Not being able to select gears, stuck in neutral, or somewhere in between. The shifter cable is held onto the trans with two tiny bolts. They fall out. Fiddley but about 25p to fix. 2. Finding multiple warnings for gearbox, asc, abc, limp home etc all at the same time. It's usually just low battery voltage and by the time you've driven home, and restarted it, it will have cured itself.

Lovely as that 166 is, there's only one Alfa rear for me. (Apologies for the lack of retro content.)

Mk2 Astra named for the G-Mex exhibition centre in Manchester. As a spotty teenager, I dragged my mates to this. Sitting in a Sierra Cosworth and a Brooklands Capri made more of an impression.

Have you looked at the plugs when it won't start? Is there a spark? Are the plugs wet?
Try a squirt of start ya curse word down the throat of the carb next time. If it catches momentarily, you have no fuel.

Excalibur; the five foot breaker bar I made from the bar of some dumbells, an old 12" breaker bar, and some very agricultural welding. It's shifted many an overtightened wheelnut and quite a few hub nuts. It was only defeated by a Saab 900 hub nut which put a bit of a link in it.

That's no age at all. Very sad. Hell of a legacy though. Hotwheels cars helped make this old fart's 50th very special.

Couple local to me, been sat for some time I could find a home for either of those. My dog would particularly like the breadvan.

The glass is in and the body is now on the floorpan permanently. I only got glue on two of the windows. This is definitely progress.

That's brilliant. I've been fascinated by Nick Butler's work since I started reading SM in the early 80s.
About 5 years ago I happened to be in the right place at the right time to see Sonic being restored at a posh resto workshop in Cheshire. With the body off, it was quite something.

Trial fit of the body shows it's still a shade off at the front so some tweaks are needed. It needs a day or two for the paint to harden first.

After what feels like weeks of rubbing down, the topcoat is finally on. Nice gloss straight from the can too.

When I was at school most of my dad's cars were rescued from the breaker by him and my uncle. I was taken to primary school in a Morris Traveller in turquoise with brown wood, that arrived with a seized diff. There was also an Amazon, long before anyone had invented classic cars, that used so much oil that my uncle used to give him old oil from oil changes. After that there were a couple of Hunters and a Dolomite. I was well into my teens when he upped the budget with a Mk2 Civic c/w that buzzy 12v engine. That was the first one I got to drive. The earliest ones I remember were a 105e and a couple of FWD Triumph 1300s that I used as a playground for a while when they died. I have pictures of him with a mk1 Consul and an A40 Devon he bought a matter of weeks before the introduction of MoT testing. My favourite was his Corolla 1.6 Exec auto. His was blue over silver and was absolutely lovely to drive. He became concerned about fuel consumption, because he did fully 600 miles a year, and swapped it for a Corsa auto which was awful.

Fair play to you - some great examples of work there! I really wish I could be bothered - but I find cleaning/polishing slightly soul destroying as I know it won’t take long for my good work to get undone... I’m genuinely asking as I want to know - How do you not feel like that? Do you find the process itself a calming thing to do? Is it for the visual gratification of being able to stand back and see the results straight away? It's a bit of both. I find it's almost like meditation. You channel your mind into doing it and it takes you away from all those people and things that were getting on your wick. I feel more relaxed after.
