Was reading up about Mitsubishi 3000GT's today on my lunch break (because reasons...) and came across something I'd never heard of before. Apparently in 1994 there was a 30 car run of 3000GT "Franz Beckenbauer" Limited Edition models All painted Yellow, fitted with OZ Futura wheels, upgraded exhaust, a bit of a power boost and with numbered plaques. Sounds cool and very 90's but I can't figure out why. What links a Japanese car brand with a German footballer who had never played or managed in Japan and stopped playing just over a decade previously? Michael Schumacher Fiats and Stirling Moss Mercedes' make some sort of sense but can you recall any other odd brand deals or limited editions?

Opel speedster scorpions edition ( 2003) “Teeek me! To the magic of the moooment. On a gloreee night." the Scorpions hitsingle in Holland from around 1990, but 13 years later they got a vehicle to drive through the 'gloreee night': de vauxhaull ( Opel) Speedster Scorpions Edition. It came with a special Gibson-guitar – with autographs of all the bandmembers .

I can´t imagine members of Genesis, the Rolling Stones or Pink Floyd putting their asses on the seats of a VW polo or golf, but there were limited editions of these. Boris Becker had a deal with Ford for Escort Convertibles and there was that Opel Corsa Steffi Special edition (Steffi Graf for those who are too young). What links a Japanese car brand with a German footballer who had never played or managed in Japan and stopped playing just over a decade previously? It´s all about money. And Franz Beckenbauer is the most legendary german advertising whore of them all. He says everything if the price is right. He would have made tampax commercials if they asked (and paid) him for. He had a contract with Mistubishi Germany. At another time he did that for Audi. It began with black&white tv commercials in the 60s where he said something like Taste on the plate, Knorr on the table! Knorr = instant soup. Many years later he even said something stupid like There is no slavery in Qatar. He did not see a single slave with a ball and chain.
Some say he received lots of money before Qatar got the football world championship.

Roland Garros Pugs, all in green (cos that’s the colour of grass apparently) with green & white interior. I bought my Son one as a cheap run around & I seem to remember that had a tennis ball style gear knob as well but can’t see that on any images Also Coca Cola TR7 with Levi jeans interior

I always thought Ford did some odd ones. They did two special editions of the Ford Explorer, the Eddie Bauer edition and the north face one- rival companies, surely?

Sounds cool and very 90's but I can't figure out why. What links a Japanese car brand with a German footballer who had never played or managed in Japan and stopped playing just over a decade previously? 1993 was when the J League was formed, and Mistubishi owned one of the founding ten teams - Urawa Red Diamonds, I wonder if they were trying to woo Beckenbauer out of retirement to sign for them? A bit like when Grampus 8 signed Gary Lineker at the end of his career - one thing I didn't know until just was that Toyota owned Grampus 8 - I wonder if there was a Toyota MR2 Linker edition? EDIT: Okay I was joking but.... www.ssplprints.com/image/125036/england-striker-gary-lineker-with-his-toyota-december-1985... sadly this predates him playing for Grampus 8.

There was a Metro "Jet Black" edition, but I don't recall the advertising even mentioning the Stranglers' drummer that it was clearly named after.

Fiat Italia 90 special edition. Those wheel trims were awsome, but they should have replaced the car horn with a referees whistle as well.

The 205 GTi 1FM A friend actually has one, he is a massive 205 nut so his will never be for sale. I think they were basically the Japanese spec car's, I cant rememeber if they had ABS though.

Ha these are excellent! @imperial - that's kind of what I mean, a girl band and a race team didn't seem like a logical commercial partnership but then maybe there was a link somewhere that all made sense. Not complaining either way, made for some easy on the eye corporate photo ops. Remembered another one driving to work... Who could forget the VW Golf Bon Jovi

California got the California Special Denver, Colorado area dealerships got the High Country Special They also had an option package in '67 called the Ski Country Special: Kansas City, Missouri area dealerships had the Twister Special Seattle Washington area dealers could offer the Golden Nugget Mustang: and Oklahoma sales district got the Sidewinder Special

VW love a special edition Possibly the finest was the Mk2 Golf 'Fire and Ice' which was something to do with a german fashion designer called Willy Bogner who directed a film in 1990 called 'Feuer, Eis und Dynamit' You could get 8v, 16v and G60 GTI models... they were all purple with an awesome cloth interior apparently designed by Willy Bogner himself...
