So what's your favourite tool? And by that I don't mean your newest or most expensive, I'm taking about that one tool that you always reach for and you'd be gutted about if it broke or you lost it. Mine has to be my old Halfords 3/8 ratchet. This was part of my first socket set that I bought when I was 17, just 23 years ago. It's looking a bit battered, and I now have a better, more sophisticated, more expensive ratchet, yet for some reason I always pick it up first. I love this ratchet!

A ratchet crimper. Probably nearly 30yrs old? Sentimental value, and still working.

Hate to sound modern but my dewalt 3/8 electric gun. Saves so much time and it has enough throttle control to be versatile for lots of jobs.

Kennedy 3/8 ratchet and Halfords Expert 13mm socket. I think both came from a carboot long ago in the mists of time but they get used pretty much every time I have to work on my 924 or Beetle and have never let me down. Probably the best £1 I ever spent.

My sawmill engineer grandfather's big carving knife. He made it himself when newly married to my grandmother or shortly before that. It's over eighty years old, still in regular use, and one of the best knives I have. My brother has the old boy's hand made pig sticker of similar age and still uses it for hunting.

Electric file - don't know how I ever managed without it . . . Is that like a small, hand-held belt sander?

I have a cross head screwdriver transparent and red handle, I used it when building my first computer twenty five years ago. I find any job where I end up using it goes a bit easier. Although now there is a chip on one of the blades, so I think it may not be the case for much longer if it starts slipping. Looks a bit like this :

My Dremel. Absolutely invaluable for dealing with the damaged fibreglass, rusty bolts and general gruesomeness of an early 1980s kit car.
I could not have got where I am without it...

Sykes pickavant 056500 body hammer. It’s a cross-pein with a low CROWN round finishing face on the other end. I proably use this one hammer for 3/4 of the tinbashing I do. I only move over to other hammers if I need a pick, a higher CROWN or a longer reach. Here you can see it’s been rehafted for the second or third time. For some reason I always slim the handle on it down a bit too so it’s fairly straight with very little flare. I don’t really know why I think it just feels better like that. It defiantly gets used more than any other hammer I have though, and I have plenty!

Mine has got to be a the 1/4 inch drive socket set I got free for subscribing to practical classics 15 odd years ago, use it all the time and it seems indestructible, even still have the sockets.
