It arrived on my driveway just now, so I thought I'd start the thread immediately!  It's LHD, originally from Cyprus, and it came with a giant ringbinder full of undecipherable documentation. Speedo says 91,000km, though when you are sat in the driver seat you kinda have to peer around the wheel to see either the speedo at all! It's a bit tatty and the dashboard is a bit of a mess, but the rest of it seems solid, and it drives fine (though the brakes are a little scary and the clutch is a bit sharp). Also, the handbrake won't hold it on the drive on it's own - it needs to be in gear as well.     First job is to give it a good wash and get rid of the cobwebs. After that the list of all the bits I need to sort out will begin, and it can go into the garage (forwards so I can get out). The tyres are too big - it should be on 155 70 R13 rubber, but it's currently wearing 175 70 R13, which makes the unassisted steering that much harder, and also means that the spare doesn't fit under the bonnet as it should (as well as giving it a slight safari look). The pictures make it look a bit nose up, but that's because of the slope of the driveway, it sits flat normally. The interior is a bit of a mess - the drivers seat is frayed and the dashboard was chopped about by a previous owner fitting air-con. It's since been removed, but it's left it's mark (and there are a bunch of unecessary wires and relays hanging out in the passenger footwell). The first priority is to make everything work as it should, but longer term I'd like to really get the interior nice, add some good looking wheels and drop it a little. There's a Y10 Turbo racecar in Practical Performance Car this month - I suspect I'll be re-reading that article many times. |

always amused me that most of these came with a matt black tailgate. A mate of mines mrs had a fila edition with a white tailgate and it almost looked wrong!!

That’s quite cool, and rare these days. By the way, it’s Cyprus. Cypress is a tree. Thanks - post amended. Wouldn't do to start the thread with a mistake on the second line!  There's 2 Y10s on Car and Classic at the moment - 4k for a standard one and 6k for a Turbo. The latter is probably worth it down to rarity, the former not (I didn't pay anywhere near that). I've rejoined the Lancia Motor Club and the Y10 section there is quite busy, so the others must just be hiding! |

When I got it insured just now (thanks ClassicLine), the person on the phone pointed out that they drive on the left in Cyprus. So I've been reading the documentation (beats working!) and there's a load of receipts from the late 90s from Brussels. So it turns out maybe this car is in fact Belgian, before spending some time in Cyprus and then coming to the UK. There are tons of receipts - I'll have to put them into chronological order and see what's first!

Yeah nearly bought an Alfetta saloon from there a while back, mainly because it was RHD. Y10s are awesome if it's the Fiat SOHC then it shouldn't be too tricky to get an Uno Turbo engine in there... |

I drove it around the block this evening, and parked it in the garage. I've not driven a manual in a little while, but it was OK by the time I got home. Getting off the drive when the handbrake wouldn't hold it and it was reluctant to idle properly was interesting though. I need to get used to LHD when parking it as well - I was a bit paranoid about clipping the far side and as a result I parked it so close the drivers door wouldn't open and I had to get out the passenger side! Ooops. Also, the tumble drier won't open very far with it parked there!  I cleared most of the spares out of the boot and test fitted my daughter in it as well (she fits great). So now I can get on with the list of jobs. Immediate list: 1. Wash and clay bar the whole car, clean the glass and mirrors with glass cleaner. APPLY RR stickers! 2. Clean the interior, make it smell nice, and ensure the back seatbelts work properly. 3. Test all the electrics and ensure everything is working as it should. 4. Get the stereo to work and find some CDs to play in it (if it's not got bluetooth). 5. Paint some lines on the floor so I can just line the car up and slot it into the garage.  6. Get 155 70 R13 tyre for the spare so it will fit under the bonnet again. 7. Replace the grill with the better condition one that came with it, and tidy up the front in general (eg rusty screws half holding the indicators on need replacing). 8. Re-arrange the garage so that you can open the door much easier - there is space there if I just move some stuff around. Soon list: 1. Drive it a bit and see how it drives after some use. 2. If nothing improves, check and bleed the brakes, and get the engine looked at. 3. Work out what dashboard bits are required to put it back to standard and hunt them down. 4. Wax underside and hunt rust At some point list: 1. Take the dashboard apart, reinforce it, and re-assemble. 2. Fit a decent bluetooth stereo (and decent speakers) 3. Get a steering wheel boss and horn push and mount your nice 3 spoke leather wheel. 4. Find some nice smart wheels (4x98, probably 14"?). 5. Find out about coilovers or lowering springs (no idea what will fit). 6. Investigate recovering (or just replacing) the drivers side seat. 7. Respray bumpers/tailgate? Eventually: Moar power! Edit - and as a bonus, as I was putting it away my neighbours appeared and told me how cool it is. |

Loved my Y10, but just an LX, not a GT.
Dashboard would frequently do a passable impression of Blackpool illuminations, and the screws holding the lights in had plastic caps with the crosshead, which cracked and splintered when they got wet and/or cold. Still a great little car though.

Military history sounds plausible - will have to check the paperwork. It got evicted from the garage when my wife got home as "it makes the house smell of petrol". My pointing out it definitely wasn't petrol, it was probably warm oil didn't help matters! So I need to work out how to seal the garage so no smell gets into the house before the car is allowed inside.  Seeing it sitting there on the drive makes me smile though, so that's fine. |

Not seen a Y10 in yonks and this looks great, Cypriots Drive on the left like us so was it purchased somewhere else and moved out there? I need to piece together the history, but it has some early service history in Brussels. When I get a chance I'll get all of the documentation out and sort it into chronological order (unlikely to be this weekend though as it's going to be nice and it's my daughter's birthday). Hopefully that will help me find out the history of the car, and maybe I can trace some of the owners or garages that worked on it. |

I'm almost certain these are a cinquecento underneath, which means coilovers are available, and punto brake upgrades including gt rear discs are possible. As are mpi punto engines 👀

These are way earlier than the cinquecento - the Y10 was first produced in 1984. I think they share suspension parts (in particular the "Omega Axle") with the facelift first gen Panda.

Yep, that's correct. If it's the 'Fire' engine then the snatchy clutch is normal, when it's adjusted correctly the release bearing is touching the fingers on the clutch cover. If it has rear drums then they'll have Fiats friction adjusters on them, they're well known for not being up to the job and allowing a lot of pedal travel, one cure is to wind the handbrake adjustment up until the shoes are just touching the drums, then back a couple of flats. I haven't tried this on my Panda yet though. My brakes will lock up with a good shove. Also the pedal box design and construction isn't very robust, you might find it's flexing a lot.
The car in PPC is well documented on the Fiat forum, he has another too,I think, there's a lot of info on there.

It's not the FIRE engine, it's a 1301 from a 124, but I can well believe that the snatchy clutch and the awful handbrake is normal, I've had old FIATs before. And yeah, it's drums on the back. I have spare shoes in the pile of parts that came with it, so it might be worth trying them at some point if I get too fed up with it. I'll be creating a thread on the Lancia Motor Club forum, because there are a couple of proper experts on there, I didn't think to check out the FIAT Forum Panda section. Thanks for the heads up on that - more reading to be done. |
