The salt flats racer - 'Evil Tweety' - actually uses a tuned version of the standard engine - he's had it up to a heady 100mph!! There's really no room to stick much else in the engine bay without major chopping of the bulkhead inner wings and footwell, and there's quite a few abandoned projects in the States that prove this fact :-( that's why the more successful conversions put the engine somewhere else: jalopnik.com/5393885/lemons-madness-level-gets-kicked-up-a-few-more-notches-v65-magna+powered-honda-z600That said, the mad clattery engine is one of the car's charms. they are damn rare here, though my mate might be selling his one: www.flickr.com/photos/goosegog/3984558867/soon, though I'm trying to tempt him to the Gathering in it first :-)

Lovely little thing that is. So, erm it's a parallel twin yes? yep, air-cooled ohc with a big fan on the back to pull the air through cooling passages. Peak power of 45bhp at about 7000rpm. Four gears, no synchro on most of them so lots of heel and toe. light though, about 550kg so can keep up with normal traffic if you thrash it. I have just put mine back on the road, brilliant little thing even though it's stock as a rock. For the moment at least. Those manifolds are supposed to give more power by having a gentler curve out of the head - not sure how much difference it would make but every little helps. They race the N360s in Japan and use twin carb and twin plug heads, even four-valve heads from a Yamaha bike with loads of custom parts.

What time did you get there? I was there, but early and headed off for an early night as Kath was cold and she'd already put up with the Ace and a ludicrous traffic jam on the way down there. Drat! Nice pics though did you see the Renault 8?

Three (yes, 3!) sets of throttle bodies of 748/916 type, complete with TPS, injectors, wiring and linkages and sexy alloy inlets Was collecting these off ebay to build a fake Hilborn-looking set up for my drag car, but just scored a genuine Crower mech system cheap so they're now surplus to requirements. each set should flow a minimum of 150 bhp worth of fuel and air, the bracketry and simple cylindrical design makes them ideal for a megasquirt project - replace twin SUs or think how cool two sets would look on a Subaru engine in the back of a VW, or three on a V6, or get another and put four on a V8 like I was planning. £60 each set or £150 for all three - bargain compared to what they generally fetch on ebay (and usually without the bellmouth inlets) :-) PM if interested, prefer you pick up or can bring to Essex swap meet or Ace nights, might post for what it costs if I've got the money in my hands

Mid-sixties (so DVLA/MoT-friendly) Chevy 283 short block - dismantled for inspection and rebuild. Has one bent rod but no apparent crank or block damage, no sign of bluing due to excessive heat etc so I can only imagine it must have been hydrauliced at some point – maybe someone drove into a pond, who knows. Otherwise very rebuildable engine, great for a period hot rod, and the 283s came with a forged steel crank so can be built to rev or handle a blower. £100 (haven't got a pic but can get one, looks like an orange V8 engine block ;D ) Mr Gasket street stack induction for Holley etc, new, has foam filter in the top. £20 And some brand new parts that I got from Summit but won't be using due to a change of plan - save yourself the shipping and duty: SFI harmonic damper: www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-C4265/ £80 camshaft and lifters kit www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-K1107/ £60 (forgot to take a pic of the lifters, looks like a box of lifters...) PM if interested, prefer you pick it up or can bring to Essex swap meet or Ace nights, might post for what it costs if I've got the money in my hands

as mrabody says, properly built, 727s will take pretty much anything, which is why I'm scorned in the MMA for wanting a manual! They'll also run for a long time even while worn out, but will be horrible to drive if so (like my old box was), but I know someone who can sort mopar boxes for reasonable money if ritchie's worried about the one he's got. The shift kit can make a real difference - switching from my tired 904 to my kitted and rebuilt 727 is totally different.
I'd say it's more grief to do the conversion than sort the autobox unless he really wants a manual. which with a big block is harder on your left leg...

Late to the thread I know, but I've investigated most of the options here (last Dart was an 833 four-speed, one I've got now is a shift-kitted 727 auto - one of the best old Mopar autoboxes, but still an auto) and I'm a bit worried that fitting a Toyota box or TKO would involve enough tunnel/reinforcement hacking that the DVLA will start sticking their nose in (however stupid it is that replacing a rusty floor on a car is legal, and sticking a different-shaped tunnel in might not be, this nonsense is only going to be more of a problem in the future)
Kev, when you've bought that A-body manual set up and decided that you didn't need it, can you sell it onto me at a loss in a couple of months please? :-D

And thanks everyone for putting up with me failing to start all the time. Fixed that, but the axle fell off on the way home...

Someone in the owners club was doing an Alfa flat four engined one, but I don't know if it ever got finished.
but did make me think Impreza turbo lump and with the scooby 2wd transaxle would be pretty awesome, and still be quirky and odd-sounding enough to suit the car.

no pics, but a very original, mechanically excellent RHD citroen DS familiale - took it in lieu of wages from my boss, did all the structural welding, ran out of money and storage and flogged it for £500

I have about a dozen or so of these petrol cans in my barn, P.M me Grizz and one is yours for the cost of postage. Theres a choice, but all in the same lovely colour of surface rust ! May i suggest once Grizz is provided for you flog the other 11 to the Brisca F2 Historic Stock Car crowd for muchos profitos? They use them as fuel tanks, I bought one when I was intending to build a car for that series...

If the spare axle is the right one and in good nick I'd be tempted to swap the whole thing over and see how it goes. I don't know the Celica's well but I can't see it's that much work to do an axle swap, especially if you don't have the tools to pull the half shaft out.
Wonder if the mechanic missed one of the ball bearings when he was fishing them out with the magnet?
Not sure what you mean by not moving in plane, but the shaft is moving up and down or side to side then the bearing's gone again, but if the face of the hub is angled as it moves then it must be bent and it's never going to be any good.

A couple of years ago those self same purists would happily have robbed it for its drivetrain to put it in a two seat Ferrari May even have been what happened to the original engine. Look at all the Aston DBSs that have been broken to keep DB4,5,6s alive. Look at the stuff getting broken here and tell me you wouldn't rather have them with a SB Chevy in them ;D www.eurospares.co.uk/breaking.asp
