I'm as upset about that Datsun 510 this is one of my favourite VHS finds: 'Jump', about Chet Jump a wannabe stock car racer. It's a weird film that has a lot of anti-religion, anti-establishment, class-struggle stuff combined with cheesy race footage and the Dad from Different Strokes... "only trouble with a thing like that, it's too shiny and nice to take any chances with..."

Right, now I'm really not happy - first time the Speed Trials hasn't clashed with something else (Hot Rod Drags, Goodwood Revival) in years so was all geared up to go, and the weather reports I read said it was chucking it down so I didn't bother.
Great pics, they go some way to making up for me missing it!

anyone noticed the tyre in the first pic, looks like serious stretch - is it going flat (I can see damage on that wing) or is it just deforming under load? it's a lot if it is...

the Cooper Cobras on my Dart are diabolical in the wet. Despite tickling the throttle, I have been inadvertantly sideways about a dozen times in the last month, helped by the autobox dropping down at unfortunate moments.
Have come to the same conclusion as Lewis that proper modern rubber is the way to go, but that means new wheels...

That Metropolitan comp coupe is ace! Not seen that one before. I mean.... who would be happy to drive this? with your literally behind the diff and your bits in firing line if it decides to let go I know a man Trying hard to get it out this year - Old timey injected alky small block. Does he look sane/happy to you? I'll get you for that... Apparently the diffs rarely let go and come out of the back and cut your gentlemens bits off. But the axles do occasionally break loose and rotate, so that the front of the diff comes round with pretty much the same results. But you're much more likely to die in a ball of invisible fire if you're running methanol, so it's best not to worry too much about where your tackle is, and worry more about not bursting into flames.

it's 5 and 6 on the road, and 4 and 4 SORNed. Still can't make 17 Zs out of that though...

according to the DVLA spreadsheet there's only 4 Z600s, and 4 N600s, so I wonder where the figure of 17 Zs came from?

I think it's kind of classy to fit the big Merc lump - there's a guy in Devon who knows how to fit them in W123s who did Matt Jones' car in Practical Classics but I don't have the details. Also some parts are ruinously expensive, but that's balanced out by the fact you can buy whole cars for not much dosh, and you don't have to chop up the car to fit it and worry the DVLA will come and take your V5 away...
Problem with the old American stuff is that even if it's running ok there's a good chance it's really pretty worn out, so at some point you're going to think 'I'll give that a quick freshen up' and then it's a fortune in machining costs. If you're going that way I'd be tempted to shell out for a crate engine (or a crate short block with Edelbrock heads to help with the weight issue), as there's no point doing all that work and finding it's slow and smoky.
That said, the modern Chrysler Hemi lumps sometimes turn up at reasonable prices over here, might be cool...

Twin plugs are popular on two-valve hemi-head engines ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hemi_engine ) like Porsches, because the plug is off to one side and so the mixture takes time to burn throughout the combustion chamber. It's a particular problem at higher revs because there's less time for the mixture to burn. Start the fire on both sides of the chamber at once and it all burns more quickly

Good article in Classic Cars about them this month (maybe last month, on the cover anyway)
All I really know is I can't afford a good one and life's too short for a bad one :-D

PaulW made it in the Honda at last I would like to point out that the bonnet was open to educate fellow enthusiasts about the car's all-alloy twin cylinder air-cooled engine. Not because it was broken down ;D Great pics as ever Sir Seth, I missed that orange 240Z, that's just peachy. Or orangey. You know what I mean.

Thats not even close to being legal in France. Will not pass a CT (French MOT) and will be impossible to register and insure. There is a French version of IVA, but (as I am finding out myself, sadly) it is such a complete ball-ache that it is virtually impossible to pass with something like this. I'm guessing this thing will be only for shows or track, or exported somewhere with lenient registration laws. thanks for making that clearer. Not sure if it makes me any happier to know the French are even worse off than we are, or if it just means we'll be in the same boat in a year or two (sorry for thread diversion - have a video of some bloke parking his car to make up for it )

Love that, but what I don't get is how we can't legally build something like that in this country, supposedly because of EU law, but they are building that - presumably for quite a lot of dosh - in France. Be interesting to know what the situation is for them and whether it's just illegal and hoping not to be noticed, or whether they are allowed to and all the 'EU says we have to stamp this out' stuff is just tosh
