1952 1957 1969 1974 1980 1988 2011 I don't know when it closed for business but I remember being driven (or perhaps driving if it was early-mid nineties) past here when it was still operating. Apparently the main building was the other side of this side road, but that has been redeveloped into a modern car dealership. I though it worth recording the remainder for posterity while it still stands.

A great post. The history that place has, which will slip into a skip without so much of a nod if nobody is bothered... Good work

A shame to see a place once so important now so desolate. Part of my fascination of exploring abandoned areas is the imagining of what they were like when in use.

Apparently the main building was the other side of this side road, but that has been redeveloped into a modern car dealership. Likely that they got an irresistible offer from one of the big dealership chains then? Or perhaps it's the same company, albeit trading by a different name judging by Ben's post, that are running the new dealership? As you say though Seth, worth recording for posterity. Thanks for sharing.

A shame to see what was once a known dealership to a number of people be banished. Still, it will be interesting to see what is made of the new dealership, and whether it will retain the PC name.

...which will slip into a skip without so much of a nod if nobody is bothered... Yeah, I regret not having taken photos of the garage that was the base for Speedwell in the late fifties/early sixties before it was knocked down and turned into flats. It was only down the road from me. I'd quite like to hunt out some of the other places in old adverts and see what has become of them too.

What does the new dealership sell? Sporty stuff or shopping trolley junk?
Seth, you have your mission! Please document these old places before they are all gone. I missed a bunch of the old factories in Coventry, Most seem to have been torn down or significantly remodelled a year or two before I got my driving licence so could go look for them LOL.

The new dealer was just a typical Toyota glass house or something. I do want to pop in to the Audi one that is along there which is a 5/6 storey glass fronted building - its the one you can see from the elevated bit of the M4, with all the historic cars on display on an upper level. Next mission is the old Darracq works in Acton, which became part of the Rootes empire. Its round the corner from several buildings that could be the dealership my Oxford came from - Stewart and Arden - but because old addresses are so vague (just "The Vale, Acton) I don't know which one it was. Of course, Google means we can sit on our backsides and look at them on the computer but its not really the same is it.

Great post Seth, I drive past this garage at least once a week to see my OH's parents. There has been so many times I've wanted to get out and accidentally fall over the fence for a better gander. I remember my dad taking me there as a kid to have a look as well as Sparks Cars. It would be great premises refurbished to sell performance/exclusive cars now but I doubt that would happen.
As far as I'm aware Toyota bought both pieces of land but have yet to develop the other side. Unless of course they have sold it.

a few pics - Brooklands garage - still extant - FE VX 4/90 sadly no longer with us Here's some photos of the iconic art deco Ford main dealers Hooley's in Nottingham taken shortly before it was demolished. Set dressing is by my mate Steve's FD Victor and Graham's Anglia And an even older snap is here, of the Rover factory at Canley being demolished by developers in the mid 1990s. The Rover P6 in shot was demolished by a Citroen Picasso about 3 or 4 years later.

Great stuff Seth. I have a thing for old garages, don't know why I've had a vague intention to search out a few old garages as listed in old Autocar magazines just to see if they are still in business. One day, maybe.
