This thread has raised a very important issue in my mind.
It is important people know their rights and how to envoke them at the moment it matters...
With RR being a car forum it this thread may get locked, look it up for yourselves.

Latest dashboard pics. I got all the electric sorted apart from the hazards, I need some heavy duty diodes if anyone knows a good supplier. MG steering wheel with cambelt pulley centre boss. I added some handy pouches to put my gloves and hat and a bottle pouch too. I also got a clock, its a real clockwork one for only £6.95! I Made a little cradle for it to sit in, Then I made a shelf for the back, this is for putting my lunch/stove/coat so when I'm working in the winter I can keep all my stuff clean and away from the spades and shovels etc, underneath. Its pretty solid. The stove is screwed down so it doesn't rattle or move about, there is plenty of space left over for a kettle, saucepan, water, cups, tins of food, bread, tea and coffee stuff. It means I can sit in the drivers seat if its peeing down or stand at the back door and make tea or soup or even a bacon sarnie! This is handy as I work on the roadside in remote places in the winter. I also fitted a decent floodlamp in the offside pillar of the tail gate It points in or out.

1.4 8v 5 speed LS (base model) 1996 105,000 No tax, MOT expired Located near Bridgnorth, Shropshire. Its a cruddy looking corsa, grubby and with some dents, I bought it last year to get me about when the HG went on my truck, I used it for work and it got in a mess from that, the exhaust is blowing a bit from where I bashed it on a rock (bummer because the exhaust is pretty fresh) and it may need a spot of welding on the sill (got an advisory last year) It has been sat in storage all spring/summer so the battery is flat but it should start with a jump. Despite its appearance this car runs fine and never let me down. The good points are, Good tyres Runs and drives. Cheap Should pass MOT with a spot of weld to fix exhaust. New fuel tank Comes with spare gear shifter linkage. 35 MPG average 45 @ steady 70 mph. make me an offer, otherwise, its getting cubed. PM me. Mike

Whilst on holiday this year we picked up this Folding bike. It was my Wifes colleague bike when she was a girl, Its a Vindec Folding 3 speed shopper with 20" wheels. It needed some new inner tubes and tyres which we got for £21 delivered. I initially stripped it down and gave it a closer insection and clean, it seems to have had very little use and showed little to no wear but the paintwork was knocked about and the chrome was suffering from 20 years or more storage in a damp shed. After cleaning After some polish and scrubbing it came up pretty good, but it was still let down by the scruffy paint and crappy decals. I decided to paint it with some rattle cans I had, I put on some lacquer and its looks kind of ok, one or two runs but nowhere too noticeable. My Neighbour likes it ;D I like it, it has a 1980s street bmx feel about it. The best thing is it folds up neatly and fits behind the passenger seat. I wouldn't mind bending the seat post back a bit.

Cheers Bryn. After a trying Blue and Black pin stripes We finally settled on silver.. Took it for a couple of weeks in Brittany, Had a good time, the van went well apart from running hot, I removed the Thermostat and it still runs hot. Next jobs are, refit stat, new electric rad fan with thermostatic switch and a vinegar soak for the radiator. Also the caravan water system is leaking and I need to get it on some ramps to investigate. Here's some pics. Did some archery.... Was given this cool old folding bike, It has been in a shed for 20 years or so, got some new inner tubes for 6 euros and its good to go! Strumey archer 3 speed too! It folds up easily and fits in the van no probs, perfect for campsite trundling and shop runs. One of the places we stayed. Its bizzare the things you can find at some French Museums. Yes that is what you think it is. Its quite common apparently, who'd have thought it!?! Anyway, moving on. My Dads new toy, a 1938 Morris Eight. Fantastic fun on a hot day round the local lanes, I was given the chance to drive it a couple of times, Driving at night with misaligned 6v headlights and a squealing wife nestling under my arm was a ball! Its no show winner but it runs great and ticks all the boxes. Saw this badass 2cv and had to stop to get a few snaps... Finally got a nice shot of the van at the coast on the way home... Had a great return crossing which was a bonus as the wife get sea sick just having a bath.

The van decided to get new front brake pads before we went away so I got some for £22 and fitted them, also gave the calipers a lick of paint and bled them. Also fitted a new thermostat only to find the old one not held in place due to no wire thingy (saw reference to it in haynes) anyway, I filed off some metal from the stat until it was a tight fit against the housing walls. Temp a bit more stable than before but still up and down a little. Got some new coolant and oil and filter to do still. I also stuck on the spare rad hoses that came with the van as the old ones are looking ok but a bit aged so decided to swap them now. fiddled with the carb a bit, it always seems to end up running rich and I have to lean it out every now and then but that is just carbs I guess? Took the van to Ruths dads and fitted the passenger side cupboard, its push to release and push to lock latches so no need for handles. (the blue squares are to keep my greasy fingerprints off for now) Also fitted the carpet, its not sitting down very well in places, I may have to glue it here and there. Also made some little mats for the floor beneath the seats to keep the carpet clean really and to cover up the dodgy edges of the carpet round the seat bases. fitted ally edging strip in side door. So now the inside is mostly completed apart from the seat covers and the front piece for the drivers side cabinet. (I'm thinking about making a swivel out table that pivots off a vertical pillar built into the cabinet but thats for later)

The letter they send you is nothing but that, a letter, you are not obliged to keep it (but it can be handy in this situation)
Just be firm with them, send a letter to them (recorded delivery) clearly stating that you are not liable and that as far as you are concerned the matter is closed.

Look at it this way,
The only reason for you to "pay" anything is because they have rendered a service to you which you accepted by consenting to contract with them, they charged you for not carrying out your part of the contract, that's what this is about and they could claim you agreed to pay the charge when you accepted the terms and conditions of their contract.
However, the Onus is on them to PROVE they have a contract with you, that is to say, they must produce your (original) signature on a piece of paper (V5) to say you are the keeper of the vehicle in question.
Without evidence of this, what is to stop them writing to every tom dick and harry demanding £80 from everyone?
I guess if it ever did go to court they would need to produce this if requested during the hearing to prove you ever were the keeper.
In my experience there system is faulty and they don't seem too confident if challenged on the claims they make.
If the account is passed to a debt collection agency the link between you and the account becomes much more tenuous as the DCA most likely never see any V5s or have access to them so therefore they rely on bullying people into admitting they are the persons liable. (in other words, owning up and voluntarily paying the charge)
In the past I have demanded they provide proof I am liable before I make any payment, the fact that "their records show, blah blah" is not good enough.
