hey everyone, have decided i want a camper van. my girlfriend and i go surfing regularly and the whole changing in the car capper is just not on. From a quick look on the web vw campers are just not in my price range so trying to fin something a bit different (the more different the better ) ;D Has anyone any ideas on what is available on the retro scene. I'm not really caring on condition as there is a welder here and I'm not afraid to use it Thanks for looking

The blue cf would suit me perfect, building a nova rally car at the moment and it could be used to toe it to the rallys something along those lines would suit

If not a CF, a CA is even cooler, theres one i walk past every day on the way to college and i think they're cooler than vw campervans, definately want one, one day.

How campery (hmm, not a real word, but asking "how camp" seemed to be asking a different question) do you want your camper to be? If you just want something cheap (got mine for about £1k) that drives decently, is reliable and you can sleep in, then a mitsubishi delica is good call. Also it won't get stuck on the beach That's an L400 similar to mine, but there are some pretty awesome L300 examples floating around on this site

how sensible does it have to be? I have a friend who would part with this for about 1500 quid, it needs work but it does drive, loads of room in it, full size fridge, bathroom with shower and sit up bath in it, its a petrol V8 though so 20mpg on a run is about all it will do, he bought it to tow his race car to meetings but has not had the time to get it up and running.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

If you get a bedford I'd aim for the CF2, they have front disc brakes and bigger more powerful, up to date engines than the CF (still old fashioned though).

If you can weld and do your own mechanics then get a VWBay otherwise stay well clear of them. People will try to rip you off soon as they see the VW logo! I think the Bedfords or Mazda Bongos are a good alternative just depends what you want - trendy above practical or practical! The Vw T4 is the best van they ever built (had one of those too) they are still cheap to buy and easy to work on. Ensure you buy the later TDI engines though otherwise you will be sat there for weeks on the inside lane being overtaken by Allegros!

not sure if its retro, or just ugly, but ive got a mk1 renault master (self built) camper which is pretty cool (imho) ^hopefully thats worked! other options would be a early transit coachbuilt, nearly as cool as a vw, and a fraction of the price.... although sadly, they do rust nearly as badly!!

'86 Armstrong MT500 '89 XR4X4 '94 Corrado VR6 Some sort of sevenesque kit car (no age yet!!) '01 Mondeo estate 2.0 (engine eventually destined for kit car!) - scrapped, engine only left! '98 E300 estate, rusty but seemingly reliable, fast-ish tat hauler. eventual engine donor A35 van, or whats left of it after it lived in a field for many years

I'm weighing up selling on the Suntor. Haven't got a pic at the mo, but if you don't mind a bit of welding then this is possibly right up your street... Not the biggest, but easy parts, simple mechanicals and... well... very VERY different! *edit* Here it is before being investigated for tinworm...
