"clutch pedal lock" which type ? The ones that go from the steering wheel to the pedal are a joke ( press the pedal down - wheel rim bends - unhook the lock ) Fitting to the brake (not clutch) pedal is better as brake won't go down as far, but you've still got the same problem...

"something not to in your face but discreet" I'd say have another think about it, I prefer "very big and obvious" so dodgy folk don't even bother trying Bright yellow full bin-lid for me, the only thing is they are big and heavy to store when you're driving, and often rattle over bumps. If buying used, the later full binlids have a built-in lock, earlier ones have a seperate lock (just as strong but not so easy to use) I had a proper carry-case for storage when driving but it never got used.

I was doing some welding today and remembered to get a photo of my home/hobby/diy mig setup : Clarke Pro-90 (it was recommended as it has a very low minimum setting - but I find I never use the low setting. It's fine for welding cars but if I was buying again I'd look at 100amp - 150amp welders, or the new 3-in-1 multi purpose machines) - the orginal cheap-n-nasty earth cable & clamp was soon replaced with a proper heavy-duty (jumper cable) piece. A good quality co2 gas regulator (works with large pub bottles at home or fire extinguishers for a portable setup), note the decent metal push-fitting (hanging in front of the fire extinguisher). My preferred supplier is www.weldequip.com/co2-conversion-kit.htm Gas bottle (co2 fire extinguishers are often sold as scrap when they are out of date, or ask you local fire brigade, pub, etc.) Tips : Avoid pub co2 bottles which have a white stripe on them (the white strip shows they have weird "dip-tube" internals and don't work with mig). For anyone using co2 extinguishers, some good info here www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/fire-extinguishers-stand-for-welding.73314/Most folk say argon mixed gas is better than co2, your choice but be aware the co2 and argon bottles have different connections - you need to get a regulator to fit your bottle (co2 or argon) I'll add more info to my "Wombling" thread if I think of anything forum.retro-rides.org/thread/197691/womble-ing-improvisation-thread?page=3

There have been a few threads recently from folk wanting to buy a welder, I managed without my own gear for many years but mig sets are so cheap now I'd say buy one if you need any welding done. Good advice is to search on here as there have been a few welding threads, or have a look on the very helpful forum www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/I'm not a professional welder but bought my own mig more than 15 years ago (after years borrowing oxy-acetylene welding kit) I was using the welder today and remembered to get a photo of my home/hobby/diy mig setup : Clarke Pro-90 (it was recommended as it has a very low minimum setting - but I find I never use the low setting. Hi, I don't know how mechanical you are or what needs doing but a few ideas - simple ones first : start with a half tank of petrol, add a bottle of "petrol magic" or similar (from your local car shop), take the car for a very long fast run (I drove 300 motorway miles to London when I bought a car that was "flat", it was a lot crisper and faster on the way home!) is there an owners club you can join and ask for advice? look under the bonnet at night when the engine is running - look for sparks around the plugleads. remove the distributor cap, check for condensation, fit new cap and rotor arm if they are not 100%. check spark plug leads are decent - renew if not sure give it a service - oil change, air & fuel filter, spark plugs (check what colour the old spark plugs are when you remove them) Check ignition timing. check valve clearances. do a compression test (best done when you change the sparkplugs) - maybe remove the head and ask your local engineering place to recut the valve seats if compression is low. I had great results many years ago with a crypton tune by a local garage, not sure if these are still an option? book it in for a rolling road session? (check they know about carbs, check prices befoee deciding)

A not-very-scientific option might be to look at pics of factory cars and see how dark the manufacturers go. Or find a seller advertising "just legal" tint (75%) and see how their demo photo compares to your glass? I suspect most sellers don't have a tint-measuring-machine but could be wrong. I'm sure you know the limit only aplies to glass forward of the B-pillar, you can tint the rear side windows & tailgate with blackboard paint if you want to

Intersting to hear other folks thoughts - my insurance has been going up by nearly 50% every year for the past 3 years (old, sensible, no accidents, lots of no claims ) not sure if it's an industry thing or my insurers taking advantage as I was too lazy (busy!) to ring around for the last 2 years I changed this year and it dropped by 30%

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback Special mention to SmokeEm for the offer of cheap materials but it's very unusual for me to go further South than Midlands / North Wales so I don't think I'll be in your area anytime soon.

I saved details of a seller at Washington when I was looking for local supplier, they seem to have a good range & know their stuff but I've not used them. See eb@y seller " tint_fit", plenty of colours and tints to pick from www.ebay.co.uk/sch/tint_fit/m.htmlsame as xbl - a reliable source (wikipedia, man in the pub etc ) told me that it wasn't possible to add to a factory tint without going past the legal limit* * I'm sure you can add a light tint to a light factory window but how do you measure if the result is legal

Does anyone else HATE the door mirrors that automatically angle down when reverse gear is engaged? Fine if you want to see a kerb when parallel parking, a total PITA when trying to reverse up a long narrow alley or reverse a trailer! I just found out today that you can turn this off using the electric mirror switch on BMWs Move the selector to "drivers side" adjustment and the passenger mirror tilts down when you reverse Move the selector to "passenger side" and it doesn't

I'd say you have 2 choices, do what makes you happy (and be prepared to be skint), or go work for someone else and get paid at the end of every month (be prepared to bite your tongue & just smile when you get frustrated). Not and easy decision. PM sent with a slightly NSFW link (www.menshealth.com) showing money isn't what makes folk happy. I've spent the last couple of months working on short jobs away from home, it suited me but isn't all fun & games. There are a few ideas on my thread, including how to make a super cheap lean-to alongside the house forum.retro-rides.org/thread/197691/womble-ing-improvisation-threadGood luck, if you can find a job you enjoy that pays enough to cover your bills and a bit left over, you've cracked it !

A mate picked up a caravan a couple of days before I arrived at his farm for a weeks working holiday / MOT prep. A few tips for getting a caravan up & running : Take a caravan hook-up cable (with blue plugs on the end), and a normal household 4-way extension cable. Remove the blue plug from the hook-up cable - remove the 13amp plug from the 4 gang extension - fit the 13amp plug to the hook up cable and you can get 240 volts to the caravan when it's at home Fit the blue plug to the 4-gang an you have a 2-piece extension cable This van had 12 volt lighting which ran off the car electrics, find a convienient point and run a 2-core wire to a spare car battery inside the van to get lighing without connecting to a car Replace all the "Retro" lights (is it ok to suggest that on here? ) with LED to get more light with big reduction in power The offending article(s)

Just back from a week relaxing with mates around Alston (near the top end of the Lake district) We were based at a farmhouse a few miles from the nearest town, nothing for miles around, just the way I like it! I was given the choice of a room in the farm or a caravan to myself, the caravan won The main problem this year has been the pivots for the rear seat - the pivots are fine but the inner wheel arch they should fix to is missing It was soon fixed with some CAD work (cardboard aided design - sponsored by Fosters & Corn Flakes ) The end result looks unchanged apart from some fresh paint on the sills, the difference is the back seat is now attached to the car!
