Which Welding Mask?edessex

I'm after a cheap welding mask, it's got to be an auto tinting one.
I've looked on eBay, and see a few around the £15-20 mark, has anyone got one and are they any good?
Or am I better looking for particular brands, if so, which?
I'd like to spend less than £40. It's an occasional use thing.
Any advice would be appreciated, I'm not going to lie; I have no idea what I'm really looking at!

The cheap ebay ones are fine, they most likely all come out of the same factory anyway. Make sure you check the listing, as some may appear to be selling from the uk, but ship from china, which can mean waiting a little longer for it to arrive. You can get an auto tinting mask which is solar powered for around £20, leaves you some money left over for some decent gauntlets!

I use a cheap eBay special and can't fault it. Check the battery and dimming everytime I put it on and have not had an issue.

I got a cheap autodimming one from eBay, looks exactly the same as the ones in Machine Mart for almost twice the price! Works fine although I'm a very occasional user.

I bought my Speedglas helmet over 20 years ago and it's still going strong! Buy well, buy once

The limitations of the cheaper ones are the range of shades that they can work at - just make sure that the one you choose has the shade range for the working current and welding type you will be doing most of.
Like all things - just buy the best you can afford

I used to be one of those hard core 'just get on with it' types. Then my face started to fall off with extreme radiation burning, I got arc eye several times and galvanised poisoning twice... not as bad as the copper poisoning though, that was evil, I've pulled metal splinters out of my eyes with tweezers AND now I get seasonal bouts of dermatitis from everyday things such as fairy up liquid and my seemingly excellent vision has deteriorated very fast mainly due to minor retinal scarring.
Get good PPE... and use it. It may be a pain in the harris at the time but not as much as having to patch yourself up frequently with potions and creams and forgetting your glasses. With what I put myself through, I consider that I've had a lucky escape... so far.
You can be invincible in the short term, long term after effects are a whole new world.

The better helmets have the advantage of being better shaped and smaller which can be very useful for getting your head in places. Thing is if you manage yo get a speedglas cheap you might find the arc reacting unit fails. I had two in 5 years but I weld all day everyday. I also did not have to pay for them as parts for them are extremely expensive. I would most likely look on Amazon in your price range and read the reviews and look on the mug welding forum. If your going to be welding a lot and for years though it's worth paying more for something else, And even looking at air fed if your going to be hammering it.

Here is my first sort of real mask which took a beating and was pretty cheap. The annoying things about it was a delay in coming out of autotint and then it tinted up even if there was sunlight or a halogen light shining on bodywork. It was wide at the back too which made stuffing my head into wheel arches a bit of a mission. It also got launched... many times! It was a bit curse word but looked awesome! This other one is a flash version of yer mans above and with settings so you can eliminate the glare tinting and grind with it too without it going dark and splicing your skin. Was pretty happy with it really. Used daily for a couple of years but I took care of it and punched random things with my fist instead of launching it. The bag it came with was tosh but when you want to go home and get the eff away from whatever pile of curse word your working on... who remembers to put their helmet in a bag? (Except on Friday nights as that is the responsible thing to do)

Cheers for the input guys. As said it's an occasional use thing. I've got to do a patch on the car, and fix a couple of bits on a trailer, then it'll probably go unused for a year or two!

I brought[sic] my cheap auto darkening helmet to work. You know what? Most times I use the hand held shield... Working on cars you have poor lighting many times. The cheap helmets are just too dark. And, many times they'r just too bulky to use. I have an expensive helmet at home, which is MUCH brighter when un-shaded, has a BIG field of view... This I can use when tucked inside a wheel arch or something like that, with poor lighting.
I'd go to a place that sells welding helmets and have a look, literally. That's what I did - and after walking around in the store from the bright to the dark corners - I made my choice. And like you, I don't use it every day. Maybe couple of times a year.
The cheapest is still a hand held shield... For such brief use, I'd consider it.
