I'm in the South Manchester area but willing to drive anywhere really, bit fed up of general mechanics (parts fitters) helping me try to fix up the old girl, nobody seems to have the patience anymore for the older cars, which is frustrating (but i can also understand if you have tons of overheads, family etc and you just want the in and out jobs where you slap on a part and wave goodbye...) Just seeing if there is anyone with good carburettor knowledge who would be willing to take a look at and help me fix up the sunny so she runs like she did when i first bought her. I'm happy to pay for your hours worked and also know a few people i can get genuine parts from as well so that shouldn't be a problem either
Thanks for reading, i do appreciate it

Hi, I don't know how mechanical you are or what needs doing but a few ideas - simple ones first : start with a half tank of petrol, add a bottle of "petrol magic" or similar (from your local car shop), take the car for a very long fast run (I drove 300 motorway miles to London when I bought a car that was "flat", it was a lot crisper and faster on the way home!) is there an owners club you can join and ask for advice? look under the bonnet at night when the engine is running - look for sparks around the plugleads. remove the distributor cap, check for condensation, fit new cap and rotor arm if they are not 100%. check spark plug leads are decent - renew if not sure give it a service - oil change, air & fuel filter, spark plugs (check what colour the old spark plugs are when you remove them) Check ignition timing. check valve clearances. do a compression test (best done when you change the sparkplugs) - maybe remove the head and ask your local engineering place to recut the valve seats if compression is low. I had great results many years ago with a crypton tune by a local garage, not sure if these are still an option? book it in for a rolling road session? (check they know about carbs, check prices befoee deciding)

Thanks for the helpful reply Hi, I don't know how mechanical you are or what needs doing but a few ideas - simple ones first : I'm pretty mechanically minded although i lack the courage and tools ha start with a half tank of petrol, add a bottle of "petrol magic" or similar (from your local car shop), take the car for a very long fast run (I drove 300 motorway miles to London when I bought a car that was "flat", it was a lot crisper and faster on the way home!) Will get a bottle of petrol magic and do this soon as is there an owners club you can join and ask for advice? It's pretty quiet on there last time i checked.. I have a Nissan Sunny 1984, some bits of info on the Thailand forums but still not much look under the bonnet at night when the engine is running - look for sparks around the plugleads. Okay will also try this soon as i can remove the distributor cap, check for condensation, fit new cap and rotor arm if they are not 100%. check spark plug leads are decent - renew if not sure no condensation but very worn, have order both new genuine rotor and cap give it a service - oil change, air & fuel filter, spark plugs (check what colour the old spark plugs are when you remove them) With the help of a friend, I've done a full service, cambelt/tensioner and waterpump, replaced old coolant with new stuff (recommended from the haynes manual) replaced gearbox oil with recommended from Haynes, changed fan belt, Check ignition timing. Hmmm ha this one stumps me a little, i think i've seen someone do this before with a strobe type light? Might have to see if my friend can help me with that check valve clearances. Okay will have a look in my Haynes about how to do this one too do a compression test (best done when you change the sparkplugs) - maybe remove the head and ask your local engineering place to recut the valve seats if compression is low. Friend may have a compression tester so can give this a shot myself I had great results many years ago with a crypton tune by a local garage, not sure if these are still an option? Not heard of this one, will have to do some research and see if i can find someone/a garage that has one book it in for a rolling road session? (check they know about carbs, check prices befoee deciding) Yeah that's a good idea, will sort the above first and get her booked in. See how many ponies are left ha

What is the issue with it, exactly?

The idle fluctuates, can smell fuel sometimes when idling and after quick acceleration, auto choke i'm not sure how it's meant to work properly and sometimes doesn't come on making the car almost feel like it's going to stall when i touch the accelerator to pull away, a general 'clunky' feel to the car not so much the steering but maybe more the suspension/engine mounts (may be my fault for retro fitting some coilovers but it just feels a bit 'loose'.. hard to explain that one.. auto box feels a little sloppy when changing gear (used to feel super smooth when i bought it 4-5 years ago, there's tapping noises, rattling noises etc and i'm unsure if they're meant to be there or whether i'm slowly destroying the engine... just those kind of things, only small really but would be nice to have her checked over by someone and given the okay she's not going to explode soon....

Pretty easy stuff, I reckon you can sort it have some faith!
+Carb - give it a good clean. This sounds similar to what I've seen which a leak from the gasket between the carb and the intake manifold. Crc/carb clean will tell you. If it runs better, its leaking, replace it. It will run better.
+ If you haven't in a long while give it a birthday. New filters - oil, fuel and air, spark plugs, leads, also as said check distributor - cap, rotor and points.
+ Timing - yup its done with the timing light, shows when the belt should line up with the timing mark.
+Agree with compression test - also advise leak down test - tells you where exactly air is escaping, if it is.
+Tapping and rattling - older engines usually do this to some degree. If its a little tapping its ok. Panic when it sounds like a building site - heavy knocking. Listen with a screwdriver handle you can hear vibrations if its coming from the head or the block. Stephyscope is better.
My TX5 (dohc efi) Ticks like mad because the hydraulic lifters are gummed up. Lifter free and an oil flush and 5,000 km changes help, its quieter but occasionally its rather noticible. Solid lifters need valve adjustments, they get loud when out of spec. The above can still help. The old days mechanics used Auto Trans Fluid to flush an engine.
+Auto box, change the ATF and new filters - it should help it, they don't like gummed up filters and black oil - it kills them.
+Suspension - looseness is likely worn bushings. Jack it up with axle stands, or use a hoist if you can, get under with a pry bar if anything moves excessively its likely the bush has had it. Could be coilovers need a service? They can wear out and may need fresh oil and seals. Especially the cheap ones. Regular struts are throw aways.
I don't think its that bad. I've had a few old carb 323's, Corollas and stuff with between 250 and 300 km's. They may use a little oil, few hundred mills between services. They may tap a little bit but generally they are pretty robust, never had one blow up on me.

Hi bloooor. For a minute I thought you were author of another thread about a Sunny with carb problems but his is a later model. Might still be worth reading his thread as there's similar advice on it 1988 Sunny
