Hi folks, I'm at the stage of working out what I'll need if I decide to rebuild the motor in my Hunter. If anyone has Rootes/Hunter rebuild experience (or links to a rebuild guide), please let me know Parts list so far : check bores then decide if it needs new rings £20 or rebore + new pistons £300 ! main bearings £25 big end bearings £25 oil pump £35 timing chain + tensioner kit £30 full engine gasket set £40 Total parts near £200 if the bores are ok, or £500 if pistons are needed + engineering costs ( rebore + mains + big ends ) Parts not yet confirmed : big end bolts / main bearing cap bolts ? engineering to fix rocker arms (to remove groove worn by valve stems) Expected problems : How to remove / refit the crank pulley bolt (180ft/lb torque ) remembering to time the oil pump / distibutor before refitting the sump Random Rootes photos All advice or suggestions welcome !

Thanks everyone, I know more now than I did yesterday which is good news fad I had a look at the universal "Gauge & sender" kits, has to worth a gamble for under a tenner welshpug the splitter piece looks close to ideal, other bits are nice but look expensive, wiring is as I'd expect and not a problem colnerov the info is helpful, many thanks I know the engine is crying out for crank bearings & rebore or new piston rings, maybe also an oil pump. I suspect my oil pressure bypass valve is tired and I've seen an article showing to strip it and bring the "blow-off" setting back to where it should be, worth doing as I'd hate to replace big end / mains etc then find I still have a problem. Rough readings will be ok, no need for high precision gauges etc. The 3 main things I'd like to check : oil pressure at tickover (to see before & after readings), as I get a flickering oil light when hot (sender and oil have been changed). max pressure at startup from cold (so I don't tweak the bypass valve too high) oil pressure when cruising at 60mph (to see before & after readings) Have found lots of budget kits (just add matching T-piece, the kit below has a 12.5mm sender), anyone have any experience of similar? www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-52mm-Black-Pointer-0-100-PSI-Oil-Pressure-Gauge-LED-Light-Universal-Car/152576525621?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l9372It looks like I'll be ordering some type of budget kit next week. Thanks everyone, all comments & advice welcome !

Hi folks, Is there a cheap & easy way to fit an oil pressure gauge to my 70s Hunter, ie Ford xflow levels of complexity (just an oil pressure light !) I've got a big problem with low oil pressure and want to try a couple of things before I think about a full engine rebuild / replacment It makes sense to fit a gauge so I can see the before & after pressures so I know if the changes have done any good. Usual rules apply, free is good, scrapyard prices are also ok I'll listen to advice, I guess the options are either a modern electric gauge & sender or go old school with a capiliary gauge ? An engine rebuild would be a good idea but don't expect it to happen when there still some life left in the beastie Plan B : I noticed seller Greenwood has NOS short engines for sale so if anyone is feeling generous and offering to pay (about £800) I'll send you my address for delivery and say a very public Thank-you when it gets delivered

You could check the marks on the dipstick... Find how much oil the engine takes (ask somwhere reliable, or Haynes) Drain oil and fill with required quantity. Check level using the dipstick, hopefuly the level is just where it should be - if not the marks are wrong for your engine

^ WHS I notice it more in a fast car. If I spot a chance to overtake something moving slowly I take one hand off the wheel to drop a gear - so I can't indicate if the indicators are on the same side as the gearstick

Hi, suggest you PM some folk who have Avenger build threads (paging Davenger ) in case they don't see the question here. You might find some info in my Hunter build thread as I often use it as a notepad for interesting links.

RWD suits me so is always on my radar, my 2 top choices would be : BMW. I liked my E36 325i/328i, not so keen on E93 325i. Have had good reports about the 330D. Nissan (if you can find one the drift boys and rust bugs have missed), S13/S14/S15 etc for huge RWD retro turbo fun.

I feel your pain! Sorry can't help but I can see similarities to plumbing jobs I've done in the past. If I had something similar in a central heating system, I'd look at cutting the pipe several inches to the right of the problem so your schraeder valve is on a small manageable piece of pipe. Then you can easily take it off the car and get it remade/resoldered etc You would need to find and fit a high pressure straight coupling (same as the one to the left of your leak) to rejoin your pipes. The difficult bit would be getting the coupling to fit the cut ends of the pipe properly (I suspect the pipes have end pieces soldered in place) Advice when cutting pipes - try to flush the pipe if you use a hacksaw so you don't get metal filings inside the pipe. On the plus side, the carpets are looking smart

Glad to know I'm not the only one who finds this kind of stuff interesting I love the thought of an keeping an old Retro alive, and having modern performance and economy. The bit I don't like is loosing the "soul" of the motor (V8 burble, straight 6 with triple carbs, of even a humble 4-pot chugging along) This isn't a forum full of motors restored to factory-original spec, I'm happy with that so the thought of fitting a non-standard engine isn't the issue - it's the thought of loosing the character and engineering I love in the old petrol engines. Since starting the thread, I've found there was something similar on here in 2009 forum.retro-rides.org/thread/71635 the progress since then is impressive A few more links - I didn't realise how much of this stuff is now available off-the-self, or even as turn-key Retro conversions Zelectricmotors - ready-to-drive Retros converted to electric www.zelectricmotors.com/videosZombie - an 800hp 1968 Mustang built by Mitch Medford www.carscoops.com/2015/04/meet-zombie-222-all-electric-800hp.htmlVery tidy Karman Ghia converted car-from-uk.com/sale.php?id=17229Ebay US has drop-in conversion kits (just add batteries etc) for Beetles, about $2,200 USD (seller Allenserene) www.ebay.com/itm/Electric-Vehicle-Conversion-Kit-for-VW-Frame-/200369951280 The Indian gov't announced plans in 2014 offering subsidies to folk wanting elec cars - or to convert their existing pertol car to elec - indianautosblog.com/2014/07/delhi-government-electric-vehicle-conversion-kit-subsidy-138363Denmark already have zero import tax on zero emission cars - compare that to the 200% on all other cars and you know why all-electric Tesla cars are unexpectedly common over there

Info direct from A.N.Other forum - electric & hybrid motors are getting better all the time so I shouldn't be surprised to see them retro-fitted into cars. I spent a lot of time in a Toyota Yaris hybrid a couple of months ago, very clever stuff. The motive power for that is all electric, the petrol engine starts only when the battery needs a topup - no connection between the petrol engine & the wheels Next question - does anyone have a spare electric conversion kit to fit my Hunter Estate Green E-type www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/comment/jaguar-e-type-zero-british-classic-goes-all-electric/Green MX5 www.jetpower.co.uk/ev_mx5_1.htm

Ask a basic question about a "project" (does it start and run ?) and get the reply "come and have a look at it" - important to me as anything I bought needed to drive 200 yards from the road to the workshop around the back of the house - was not happy to make a 250 mile round trip ( to glasgow'ish) just to find the seller had removed the carb + plug leads !
Will be worth £15k when done ( guess he was lucky when he bought it for 500 a few months earlier ! )

I'd check your local DIY stores/shops, my local Wilcos sells similar in packs of 2, Aldi often have "Jumbo" mixed bag of about 20 clips (different sizes) for under £5. And yes, " SPAM FROM" is the forum removing reference to the cooking room (as it's not cool car related ... unless you know better )

A couple of Hunter-related coincidences (coincidenci ?) I bought it in Wales (KFW) and took it 350 miles to my place "Up North" (Tyneside'ish), then took took it for an MOT at a local garage I use ( on a back lane in the local village, in the middle of nowhere) The garage were convinced they had sold it a few years earlier, they remembered as the guy they sold it to had no sat-nav so had stuck directions on post-it-notes all along the dashboard before driving away in it I was sure it couldn't have been the same car as mine had come from Wales. A few years afterwards, I found out KFW made the 350 mile trip (by bus?) to buy it from my North-East back-street garage and driven it back to his place in Wales Another time, I was heading North from a trip "Down South" and stopped at a small town about 50 miles before I got home. A chap came over for a chat, he was on his way home from the coast (heading West) and had decided to stop at the same town. There was no reason for us to be in that town, it was just a random stop-off for both of us. It turns out he owned my Hunter about 20 years ago and sold it when he moved to the country and needed 4WD when it snowed

We are heading towards Autumn, time to think about harvesting some fruit Credit to a couple of folk on here who have homebrew threads : grizz - forum.retro-rides.org/thread/199599/seasonal-hedgerow-plum-grizz-stylefad - forum.retro-rides.org/thread/200070/cider-brewingOne of next doors Elder bush / trees, loaded with Elderberry 6 heads of berries give about 1 pint of fruit Tease the berries off the stalks using a fork to avoid crushing them Recipie : 1 litre of Vodka empty 1 litre bottle + empty 70 cl bottle. sugar (3 teaspoons in the litre bottle, 2 in the 70cl bottle) lemon rind (4 slices in each bottle) 3 pints of fruit, shared between the 2 bottles. Fill the bottles with Vodka to the neck, cap the bottles and shake well. Drink the remining Vodka Repeat the above using Gin, drink any remaining Gin 6 pints of berries being washed & bottled The plan is to shake the bottles occasionally, filter after about 6 weeks (using coffee filters), and it should be ready to drink. Roll on Christmas
