At least she's not just crapped in the sink like one of my little darlings... I reckon you should sack off the Mopar idea and buy a Beetle. I mean, look at how much fun luckyseven is having!

Oil on the clutch is another possibility. Had one with a leaky flywheel oil seal and it juddered when pulling away for months before it failed altogether.

We're never happy with what we've got! Mine is a '68 that looks like a '67, I've had a '51 that was pre-crotch coolers, a '61 that got written off before I had chance to do much with it, a '66 chop-top race car and I STILL want an oval!

As for the breather, each head to the box and a third from the fuel pump block off should suffice. Mine leaks from the oil filter - I've got a new one to fit and the oil as well, just no time to do it!

I'm glad it's running for both of you. It sounds a bit notch y in the first video? I suspect it's still on the jets for the wilder cam, so not running perfectly until it's out of the idle circuit. Drive for a couple of hundred miles then retorque the heads, and check valve clearances regularly. Edit: if you're running chromoly pushrods, set them to zero clearance when cold - no up and down movement but just able to spin them.

Afternoon all, a friend at work has just bought a 2006 Fiat Grande Punto as a cheap disposable runaround. It's pretty decent overall, but there's a couple of electrical problems (surprisingly enough for a cheap Fiat!), namely the passenger side window and the rear wiper not working. I've checked both motors and they're fine, so I suspect a problem in the loom, especially as the window keeps blowing fuses. Can anyone recommend a good auto electrician in the Wolverhampton area? I'm happy enough with older stuff but this is out of my comfort zone!

Closest I ever got to owning a Mini was buying one on Ebay and finding it had no V5 when I went to collect it. With a Mini the modifications seem to be wheels, seats, a tickle under the bonnet and it looks exactly the same as everyone elses. With a Beetle you can pick from a range of styles and build to that, with whatever crossover you want. You want fast in a straight line? California Look. Corners? Try German Look. You want to look like your suspension has collapsed and you're one of the cool kids with an interesting beard? You want an original paint early car then. All will cost you quite a lot of money but they're still cheaper than Fords!

Why? As far as i'm concerned you can backdate your car to the 20's with dickyseats and wire wheels. you brought a car that was virtually dead, back to life. Do whatever you please. Paint it pink with unicorns on the roof and die seatcovers. It's your car, your vision. And please continue to write , with lots and lots of pictures. Hats of to you sir, your skills are nuttier than squirlpoop. Bookmarked I agree that it's up to the owner to do what they want, but the reason behind backdating is usually to make a car look like a convincing facsimile of an earlier car. If you're going to do it, you may as well do it properly, especially if you've got the skills! Quite like those seat covers though...

Just remembered one tow back with RAC! I'd just put the big motor in the Beetle and taken it to Shakespeare County Raceway for what turned out to be their final event. Had a couple of runs on the Sunday and then set off home, but it was losing power and sounding like it was not running on all four cylinders. I limped it in to Hopwood Park services and popped the rocker cover off to find all four lash caps sat in the bottom of the cover, all four valve clearances open wide and couple of push rods hanging out. Slackened off the rocker shaft and found one of the studs had snapped off completely so I took all the bits, put them in a box and called the RAC. I explained what had happened but they said they had to send a patrol before a low loader, and apologised for wasting my time but it was protocol, as the low loaders are sub contracted. Patrol gets there, asks to see the problem so I showed him the box of bits and said that unless he could remove a broken stud in situ I'd need a tow... nice chap, we had a laugh about it and he called for the truck that ended up taking me home.

I had a solar panel from VWoA many years ago that was designed as a trickle charger for when cars were sat in storage lots unsold. I changed the plug so that I could connect up a 12v coolbox - worked ok, but not proper chilly.

I had the RAC out to my Beetle a couple of months ago. The chap was quite pleased to be doing something different, and even more pleased that I'd got the parts to fix it with me. I wasn't being lazy, I just wasn't going to fault find on the side of a dual carriageway with a 3 year old in the car!

Awesome! I'd still take it to get it balanced to match your old one though - the complete rotating assembly will have been done in the past, starting g with the crank, then the flywheel, followed by the crank pulley then the clutch pressure plate. You don't want to upset that if you can help it, especially not with the rev capability of the motor!

Where in the world are you, John? You've obviously got a good machine shop fairly local, but you need another flywheel to lighten and balance. You can get 200mm flywheels new but not sure of the quality. I've got one that came with a load of engine bits I bought a while back that you're welcome to if you can get it from me in the West Midlands, but it's a heavy beast! Needs some time on a big lathe to get the weight down...

Wow, that's a new one to me! I've seen it on a flanged crank with a floater clutch and a four puck disc (I even had to turn the heads of the bolts down in a lathe! Stupid race parts!) but never on a stock set-up.
