My son Thomas was 10 on Friday, in anticipation I'd got hold of a 1300 beetle engine The plan is to strip and rebuild the engine, hopefully with a few enhancements.... Then source a transaxle, beam, and then look for something to put it in (a fugitive seems ideal as we won't need to find a shortened floor plan as well, but that'll be a while yet) So for his birthday he got a Halfords Advanced 28 piece socket set and the engine..... We then went on cub camp for the weekend, got about 1/2 hour to play today, so stripped off the coil the leads and distributor and had a chat about that (it's not going to be a quick project!)

Ooh, a twin hot spot! Not common at all, so if you're changing the exhaust you'll also need to change the inlet manifold too. I had a group of year 10 and 11 lads strip a couple of Beetle engines - they loved it! If only they hadn't been knackered inside they would have rebuilt them too!

Awesome present! I'm sure he will love it, can't wait to do stuff like this with my lad, although will have to wait a few years as he's only 1 Make sure you get him in the habit of wearing gloves, kids skin is much thinner than adults and old engine oil is nasty stuff.

Excellent idea fella! I'm thinking of introducing my boy to engines with a 2 stroke rebuild then we can brave a 4 stroke together!. Hope your son enjoys and learns alot with the journey.

I must say this is very cool. I'm only discovering the joy of cars at the tender age of 27. Really wish I was taught this sort of thing when I was younger, however my parents didn't know anything about cars either. Looking forward to some updates - I might learn a thing or two also! Bookmarked

So, been a while.... I always knew it was going to be a slow burner. Made a start, but soon decided an engine stand would be sensible. Won one on eBay, but beetle engine doesn't fit, so then bought a yoke. We then made a start, got the tin wear off with only one sheared machine screw! We stripped one head off, barrels and Pistons off, then turned it over so he could see valves moving on one side and rods on the other. Then stripped it fully until we split the cases, the crank and cam seem fine, there is a bit of wear on the bearings. But they'll be changed anyway. So next task is to start cleaning parts and sort the bearings so we can rebuild the bottom end, with a side project of stripping heads and lapping valves etc when we run out of things to do.

to thicken the plot....
Tom has been helping to sort my scrap, the deal being that we can invest that money into this project.
He's worked really hard and helped strip some of the big stuff to bright, and sorted the rest into various bags... we've had a couple of weigh ins,
I have been put in touch with a mate of a mate who recently bought a fugitive from ebay, he has been reminded by his wife that since they are supposed to be moving house this was a bit silly..... so negotiations are afoot. And as we have the scrap money, this has been deemed acceptable
(fingers crossed)

I don't know where you're based but I've got all the running gear from a Jeans beetle including disk beam, 1300 gearbox & axle tubes etc. Basically all the ruuning gear. I also have floorpan & logbook. Based in Bristol.

Where did you get the yoke from ? I've got to rebuild my bug engine over the winter & that'd make it a bit easier .
Also wish i was introduced to engines at an earlier age !!

You can use the bellhousing from a camper gearbox - it'll take the starter motor for test running too!

So today we have been cleaning! The crankcases were minging, so we've gunked them off and given everything a good cleaning (going to put them in a mates parts cleaner through the week hopefully) So next up is to order some bearings...... so it's still on standard bearings! A shot of the Fug coming home

The start of this project began fairy similarly to Mercdans,
Tom was having problems at school. The school were saying there was nothing wrong, he was getting really upset and had lost his confidence and kept saying he was stupid. In the end we had him dyslexia tested, as a result we found out that he is really clever but processes at the lowest school level (so they don't seem to care much, he's scrapping by) but he is really inquisitive. So alongside the work on the engine, we are also keeping a logbook of our work (and playing with speech to text software etc) and trying to answer any questions we can along the way.
So we've also looked into the part numbers on the block, found out what AS41 means, and looked at how you can cast alloy. We've researched the engine number and worked out it was built in the first week of June 1973.
(That probably makes me sound like a really pushy dad!! Hopefully I'm actually just helping him find some coping mechanisms for his dyslexia and trying to give him some mojo..... But tell me if you think I'm wrong!)
