You could do a combination of prefab and block... Back in the early 1980s my dad did just that - took down an existing sectional garage and rebuilt it to make it wider and longer. I don't remember a massive amount about its construction (I was just starting primary school!) but I do remember block work piers with the concrete panels in between, and a little workshop across the end. The steel angle iron roof trusses were widened by stick welding extra angle iron in.
Might not be entirely what you're after, but food for thought.

Just read the whole thread in one go, very interesting! I've been watching a YouTube channel called Oak Swamp, he's building an Austin 10 based special and it's a great series. He's gone big-block with a Reliant engine though!

I second (or third, or fourth or whatever) the idea of stripping the car yourself. You get to know the car a bit more intimately, the painter will get a better idea of how close their quote is and most importantly you don't get so much of a nasty surprise when you come to pick it up and get handed a revised bill!
As for grey paint, some colours need the wider arches, and grey is one of them.

In the performance aircooled VW world, we mix and match - European car, American performance parts. So a copper head gasket could be 94mm diameter, and 40thou thick... Loving the 32, metalshapes, while I prefer a more 60s West Coast look, I do watch Matt at Iron Trap Garage on YouTube building some lovely East Coast style cars. With the sweet swage line on the outside of a 32 rail, it seems such a shame to hide it by dropping the body down over it!

Welcome to the area Robert. I'm just south of Whitchurch so about 25 minutes north (or so) of Shrewsbury, having moved here from Surrey in September/October. Next time grizz pops over if it suits we might get together if you're well settled. Not a million miles from me either Craig, I'm about 20 minutes from Bridgnorth. Loton Park Hill climb isn't much further on - I can do it from mine on the outskirts of Kidderminster in 45 minutes on a good day, just shy of an hour otherwise. Shelsley Walsh is 30 minutes in the opposite direction too!

I seem to remember reading somewhere about this having a Corvair v8 in the back, for moar powers at the request of Mr Mcqueen. Corvair flat 6, but yes, the coolest man alive decided that the coolest buggy on the planet (the Meyers Manx) needed improvement. I'm not totally sold on it being his best ever idea...

Excellent news. We moved two years ago and it was the most colossal ball ache. Saw a house. Put offer in on house. Offer accepted on house. Sold our house. Three times! (Including to an utter helmet who had his own very similar house up for sale two streets away - just wanted ours off the market while his was up!) Lost our new house, but blessing in disguise as the drive didn't actually belong to the house! Found another new house and finally moved in during lockdown with no removals company and no way of fitting a LWB Sprinter up the drive! I'm never moving again. We're not having any more kids because there aren't any more bedrooms, and I'm really never moving again!

Bit too hot rod for what I'm tempted by Tony - think more VSCC flying bedframe type contraption Though seeing as the engine would still be miles off era it'd probably be easier to use a MX5 1.6 engine which with a bit of faffing could look very similar to a early twin cam. Anyway I'm getting ahead of myself, won't be doing much of anything with any of it for the foreseeable. Things could change, don't know yet. I'll have a measure of the wheels this weekend. Think they're Harold Bull hubs on mine. Have you seen Oak Swamp on YouTube? Stumbled across him a couple of months ago - he's building special out of an Austin 10 with a Reliant motor. Looks like the sort of thing you're after! With regards the dragster, I can see your point, but I'd keep going bit by bit. Maybe start with the trailer as the current project - if you've got somewhere to put the car at home/work and also something comfortable to use as your pit at the track, you'll be much more enthused about the car itself.

I've got feeling Jonny Smith did an episode of the Late Brake Show on the rod above. I'm not sure how I feel about it - from some angles it looks great, others less so. Overall its more my cup of tea than some of the other stuff on the other threads though.
Personally, I'm all in on the Gasser Pop, and the Fordson is pretty cool too.

I do not need the black truck. Its halfway down the country away from me. I have nowhere to build it. I have far too many projects unfinished or even unstarted.
But goddammit I want it!

johnthesparky I think that's why I've stuck with Cal Look VWs over other styles of VW. I don't get the "early split camper/get so stoned you miss the entire show" mentality, or the "slam it so low it needs flat floorpans" look, or the fake patina (or most of the real patina I suppose!). I don't get the air/hydraulics on an aircooled VW. I kind of get German Look but it'd be easier to just buy the Porsche... What I'm trying to say, I suppose, is that the forefathers of Cal Look are now in their mid 70s, but there are still people in their 20s who get it, so there is a respect thing going on to those that have gone before, rather than ripping up the rule book for no good reason like Max Power seemed to promote.

I bought issue 1 of Max Power, and I was bought the last one. I probably picked up three or four in between, but usually in a "I can't believe how bad that thing is" kind of way, to show my housemates at uni something terminally tasteless.
The first one (Dimma 205, Escort Cosworth if I remember right) showed promise, but that was quickly stamped out.
Having said all that, I can fully understand the nostalgia aspect of an event like this, and I dare say the quality of the builds have improved!

And then this popped up: On ebay, breaking for spares. Same year. Same model. Even the same colour as ours had been originally. Woo. In Motherwell. Boo. Spoke nicely to a few people at work far more important than me and within a fortnight the entire front end was in the workshop! Yay! It wasn't expensive, and the car had a destruction order on it due to a pretty major engine fire, but if I could have afford more of it, I'd have had it. Mainly to solve some problems that pop up later. It looked pretty good on the face of it, just one patch put on the bottom of the spare wheel well and another on the lower quarter under one arch, but original bumper mounts, heater channels, bulkhead, uncut dashboard, I'm quite happy at this point. Plan is to drill out the spot welds for the heater channels, cut through the windscreen posts (like on a roof chop) and drop the whole thing on in one lump. But then I start looking closer - it's had a knock in the front so the sides of the spare wheel well are creased, which I can sort, but it's just time. And I hadn't reckoned with the breakers favourite tools - the 9" grinder and the gas axe! To remove the doors, the heads of the screws have been melted off with the big bottles, rendering the captive plates scrap, and also damaging the bit of the door post you'll see every time you sit in the car. And even better, to remove the check straps, the grinder has been used to chock the bracket off the door post. It's been used to chop through the floor (but I get some bonus parts still attached) and the windscreen posts, but so low that it's gone through the demister vents. This is going to be a long project... Year 11 have now left, so I get a bit of bonus time, so I'll fix the MR2 and get that gone, then I plan to hang the front end by the bumper mounts from one of the ramps, smack it with a hammer and see if it'll un-crease under its own weight. Worth a try, right?

Omigod! 18 months with no updates! To be truthful, 18 months with not much progress.. School has been chaos. Home has been similarly! Moved house in May 2020, which was nice, from a 1971 bungalow to a 1754 mid-terrace cottage. Still got a garage, but that's full of stuff that won't go in the loft until the roof is fixed. Ah well... It's only money. And time. And space. So my Beetle and wife's T25 are in the workshop at school, along with a 2004 MR2 that we changed the rotten rear subframe on before discovering the power steering had a major leak. That needs to go soon, as the owner is leaving for a new job in July! But despite having a sizeable turnover of senior staff at school, and students with needs far more complex than I've ever dealt with before, I've been busy. The big problem with the front of this car was that it was bent. Crashed at some point, and the drivers front quarter panel and heater channel replaced. Then a new nose for rust repair (or more crash damage, who knows!), all of which had been chopped off a while back. I'd bought a pair of repro quarter panels, when I got the floors and sills so I thought I was all set. But the filler flap area was niggling me - it just wouldn't be right. I even bought the quarter panel with no filler flap at all and resigned myself to running an earlier tank with the underbonnet filler. Then I bought two thirds of a New Old Stock 1971/72-only quarter panel with the correct fuel filler aperture, just the bumper mount missing (and the captive nuts, which was annoying but not insurmountable) and another chopped up quarter (either NOS or very old repro, and I'm leaning towards the latter) which one of my students started to graft onto the NOS one. Some progress, even though as I type this I realise that the photos are on my work phone...

I've just read the five pages of this and I've got to say that I'm jealous! 25 years ago a couple of the guys in my local VW club bought cheap 912s (I think they were about 6k each!), and I got my Karmann Ghia through a couple of trades. I raced my Ghia in VWDRC in 99, and partway through the season I was asked if I fancied a swap for a ratty 912. I said no because I was still loving the Ghia and thought the prices would stay similar. I have kicked myself every single day since.

On an aircooled Beetle, it can be a real pain in the bum to work on the starter motor or adjust the clutch. In an opposite stance to this thread, VW discontinued the rather handy access panel in the luggage area in 1952. Every time I do a job there I think about fitting one of these panels, then decide that I'll do it next time. I never do..
