With a few projects on the go, I always try to rough out the costs and what key parts that I'll need. I'm also tight, have a 7 moth old baby and a wife who (unfortunately) is quite clued up and knows what things like tools cost, so to ease the blow of buying these expensive parts I've used them as an excuse to buy expensive tools and make them myself So on this occasion, my excuse for buying a brand new AC/DC TIG setup, mask, gloves, another gas bottle and a few other bits, was that it came in cheaper than buying the two inlet manifolds, paying someone else to weld up a gearbox and the fact I wont have to wait until a quiet week of night shift covers to glue fancy metals together! So, My question is: Whats the best excuse you've used to justify a purchase to a wife/husband/significant other?

The rubber isn't the major problem with old tyres. Its the re-enforcement built into them. The steel belt degrades when moisture gets inside from cuts/cracks along with the Nylon that was used in older tyres. They then fall to bits when you get on the motorway or swerve to avoid the minibus from the nunnery.
They use other materials in car tyres these days, Cant say what as I might get in trouble at work!
Rattlecan's tyres probably will be fine when you fit them on their 10 years and 1 day's birthday, However, crashing a very expensive car because I thought my old tyres would probably be fine would be just as daft as getting the 12 points or what ever it is for 4 illegal tyres on my license (3 points each iirc)
This is one of those laws that is being introduced because certain individuals are taking the mick, the same reason that i believe the MOT exemption should be scrapped or at least made into a classic specific yearly test.

Christ, it's pretty wrinkly?? did the heat molding do that? It must be an old piece of perspex, some of this stuff works a treat to polish it up.

At the end of the day its just a board with a couple £'s worth of electrical components on which is why its so cheap. A Haltech wouldn't cost much more than £200 in parts, but you pay for the name, support and their own software. don't expect the sea fox to be perfect, but they are good!

right I'm not 100% sure about it, ive only heard unstable things about the speeduino so far, but then that was from people who do tuning. I've used a home assembled speeduino and i'm currently using a core4 ecu from DIYEFI. Both work great. The issue that they have is that poorly assembled units are a nightmare, the same way that Megasquirts used to be, so some "tuners" get their knickers in a twist and will flat out refuse to touch them! If your not sure about the quality, buy a pre-assembled unit as it'll save a lot of hassle if your not keen on soldering!

Anyone know anything about fitting Vinyl Roofs??? I haven't fitted one personally, but a good friend of mine has and he said that he'd just pay a professional to do it next time. It took two attempts as the seam wasn't perfect down the centre the first time! If you do get it fitted elsewhere, make sure you remove whats on already and sort out any scabs of rust first as once the roofs on you'll have no idea whats happening under there.

It takes very little oil to make a manifold smoke for a while. The residue from the de-greaser will smoke as well. Take it for a good drive and get it nice and hot. I bet at the first traffic light you get too theres smoke pouring off the manifold and by the end theres none.
The rusty rough finish on that manifold will hold the oil/ residue in too which wont help. I fitted some new headers to my Capri, First time i stopped i thought the car was on fire but it was the oil on them from storage (to stop them rusting) burning off!

Update time!
New fuel filter arrived and fitted. The old one looked brand new inside, but the new filter made a very slight difference. There's some black smoke out the back now too when your booting it (99% of the time in these things) so its definitely had an effect.
Chucked a straight pipe on the exhaust for testing purposes (needed to replace the original crusty one) and this had no effect on performance so a blocked exhaust if off the list too.
The throttle still only seems to do anything in the second half of the travel though.
Previous owner had a new cambelt fitted about 5k ago, so maybe the pump timings out?
Next time i'm near the scrappy ill have a ratch for a pump i think. Even if its just to take to bits and see how they work. (Diesel is a new world to me!)

It doesn't feel any more down on power than my last escort van! There's also no smoke out the back when giving it some.
The new fuel filter should arrive tomorrow or Monday so I'll report back once that's on.
If it doesn't help I'll have a fiddle with the max fuel screw. What's the worst that could happen 😁

The fuel filter looks new, however a replacement is only a fiver so I'll give that a go! The screw on the back is item 10 on this diagram "Soupape regulatrice" which translates to regulating valve. As to what this regulates is another question, but what I do know is that the Allen key hole has been rounded off in the past!

Hello everyone. I've recently got myself another w reg escort van, 1.8 n/a diesel. It's just as gutless as the last one, however the first half of the throttle movement does nothing with the second half then doing everything! It's not a loose throttle cable as it does it when moving the throttle lever on the pump. There's a small screw on the back (next to the 4 injector lines) that looks like it could have been fiddled with but I didn't want to start fiddling and balls it up completely! Anyone have any clues?

It was me that fitted the mx5 lump into the hunter. It fitted in very easily from what I remember. No cutting of the transmission tunnel required, just a new gearbox mount to cobble up. Hardest part is getting someone to sort the propshaft out. There's photos on here and some more on my Instagram Hillmanjames Any questions let me know James Edit: here's the link to my thread... forum.retro-rides.org/thread/166310/hillman-hunter-megasquirt-wider-arches

Ive only had bother with automatic chokes. A friend of mine changed the carb on his mk2 golf from the old auto choke to a brand new Webber with a manual choke. Transformed the car!
I need to do the diff on my Capri soon too. 300bhp and a welded diff hasnt helped longevity at all.

If your upgrading the Megasquirt, id aim to ditch the EDIS unit as they can only go so low on the ignition advance (12ish degrees i think)
This can be a bit of a problem if your running alot of boost or your struggling with detonation from too much advance.
They go into a fail safe kind of mode when asking for less which is a pain. One way to get around it is to trick it by offsetting the trigger and basically making the whole ignition table out by X ammount, to get the true advance lower than the EDIS will allow.
I updated my old 3.57 from edis to two spark outputs. It wasn't too difficult and you can keep the ford coil.

Just been on the phone to Christian from Classic Line getting the car insured for the journey to RRG2019 , Easy peasy and a great price too. First time a owners club 'discount' scheme has actually been cheaper than my other quotes.
Cheers guys
