With a few projects on the go, I always try to rough out the costs and what key parts that I'll need. I'm also tight, have a 7 moth old baby and a wife who (unfortunately) is quite clued up and knows what things like tools cost, so to ease the blow of buying these expensive parts I've used them as an excuse to buy expensive tools and make them myself So on this occasion, my excuse for buying a brand new AC/DC TIG setup, mask, gloves, another gas bottle and a few other bits, was that it came in cheaper than buying the two inlet manifolds, paying someone else to weld up a gearbox and the fact I wont have to wait until a quiet week of night shift covers to glue fancy metals together! So, My question is: Whats the best excuse you've used to justify a purchase to a wife/husband/significant other?

Too many projects, not enough time.

I like your question and the concept of asking it.
Maybe I choose, or luck on the right ones.
Never had to justify to wives (2 in 30 years) or girlfriends.
Maybe because I am frugal nd seek out alternatives to random spending.
But........ if I were to make excuses, it would be along the lines of โI need it to get this job doneโ

I just got rid of the wife, dead easy. Been with girlfriend (as I like to call her for 21 yrs)We live in MY house (but she also has her own) never ask for owt, neither does she. I want a car, I buy it, she wants one she buys it, as we do with owt else. Itโs absolutely effin brilliant.

I bought a chop saw for making an exhaust. I have used said chop saw for one exhaust cut. As it's one of the Evolution ones that cuts both metal and wood, I thought it'd come in handy for cutting up all the donated scrap wood my 81-year old Dad has for his wood burner. So far I've cut up (at a guess) about 3 tons. So that's what I said it was for.

Not a problem, big things always cost ยฃ40, small things a tenner, it's the law.

My wife has bought lots of my tools. There's usually something at birthdays and Christmas that will live in the garage.

she says "cordless angle grinders in aldi do you want one" yes i reply and off she goes and gets one, and then the 40 v battery as didnt work with the 2 20v ones i already had for multi tool and impact gun. but then again when she was doping a job she hated at DPD call centre i'd surprise her with shoes(she likes high shoes cos shes little) mind you she has her own tool box overalls cordless screwdriver ( aldi again can she have one too) and mig welds . quite funny when the guys she works with have car problems and come and ask her like the noisy civic that garage said rear differential was making the noise she said wheel bearing took it somewhere trusted and was a wheel bearing.
