Come to think of it, the American tin is quite absent from this topic, here's a pretty chic way of getting around. Cadillac Series 62 (MK5) For bonus points drive around with a load of strange dogs in the car and refer to them as "dweebs" in a strange New Jersey accent. Actually another thought, what about a US/Northern Ireland combo! Delorean DMC-12 That'd be within budget. Chic? Hell, I don't really know anymore, I'd quite happily potter around Europe in one though. What a statement it would be!

Not had one of these yet? Coupe may even be more chic than roadster?

I'm kinda surprised nobody's yet suggested a Stag. It wouldn't be my personal choice but it does seem to tick quite a few of your boxes.

MGA is nice, but only a 4 speed & 1500 / 1600cc. Wouldn't want to drive one for that sort of distance, unless I was only using the scenic routes. Boot space is also a joke, and IIRC it can't be locked securely on the roadsters - opens from in the cabin. Great 2nd car / fun car though.

Why not take the Dattie? If I can tour northern Europe in a bloomin' H van, a Datsun would be a piece of proverbial. Personally, I'm about to tour the whole of France in a Citroen BX that I bought a couple of weeks ago for £266 (and which has so far been to garages twice - should be exciting on the trip then...) Slam it at the touch of a lever! I'm doing the BXagon Challenge raising funds for Cancer Research UK. Hope this modern(ish) Citroen can prove to be as good as the 2CV and H van...

Why not take the Dattie? If I can tour northern Europe in a bloomin' H van, a Datsun would be a piece of proverbial. Oh it is a sensible choice... but funky late 70's Datsun vs. chic, cool, 60's coupe/convertible ... well I'll take the latter, even though I love the former The stars and their Cars book had some very cool ideas in, if I get my internet working at home over the weekend I'll put some up. Is this too Essex to be chic :

A Capri would be a great choice, they are a proper grand tourer after all.

I'll do something similar in a few years with my son. Either in the Imp or the Singer Vogue.

Ford Focus RS Mk1 - hello low MPGs and "wanna race me" at every set of lights... 1973 BMW 2002 - Twin 40's, 284 Cam, Revolutions, E21 Recaros + more Porsche Cayman 987 3.4S - here and due to cost me more money than I have

Someone already suggested Triumph Vitesse - but this one has actually done 2 European tours this year ;D Most recently the club Triumph 10 countries last weekend (just under 3K miles in 5 days with a lap of the 'ring thrown in). Nick

Either has to be a convertible, or something like a DS. Big old jag or merc convertible would be high on my list of cars with suitable period clothing for the look! Or spend a few grand on the datsun and make a memory! Lewis

Lots of really interesting suggestions here .. but maybe kind of missing the point ... The only truly cool way to tour Europe is to do it in what you already have .... buying a big budget car specifically for the purpose of posing at Stelvio is a little too contrived ... too much like self-proclaimed cool for it to work .... a Triumph Stag will look good but unless you already own it, it will have too much artefice for it to ring true .. a shepherd's Renault 4 on the other hand will look amazing ... true cool is about the unexpected in remarkable situations.....
So HW, buy a car that you love for the sheer thrill of driving it ... then take it to Europe, and by default, that will be cool ... and then you can avoid the "if only I had taken an X or a Y" ....
That said, large sunglasses and a head scarf for the lady plus blazer and cravat for your goodself is the only way to go .. ;-)

That's really good advice! particularly from someone who just toured europe and russia in a 30 year old ford capri with Team Blitz for company! Take your car, be who YOU are. I can't think of anything better than that ;D Personally, I'd be taking a cortina.. for chic, it would HAVE to be a mk3 GXL 2 door, and black, but I think maybe you all guessed that already
