Thanks for the suggestions so far... my internet stopped working last night so didn't get the chance to reply or check through the thread with my other half. A few cars that I'd forgotten about on here as well .. so that is good. At the moment there is no hard and fast price limit... but sub 20k for a good quality car would be favourite. Plan being to buy, drive through Europe*, service on return, sell... Norm, whilst your suggestions are up to you usual hilarious standards, if I'm going to drive a 70s Datsun through Europe I'd already pointed out the fact I have one as a back up. *Somehow without scratching, crashing or breaking it.

However they look foul in red, but dark blue or grey (both metallic) really suits them. This and the 456GT are the only recent Ferraris that I would look twice at. Are they really up to £15K or is that just the 412? An aquaintance of my father's bought a good 400i during the last recession for just £7K!

Sounds like a dandy jaunt, and should be treated as such... So for a start, no hard tops of any kind For reasons of reliability, kudos and serviceability in remote spots... I'd go Mercedes, but the deviant in me sings modern 'Morgan'. If you can make some subtle suspension upgrade, springs would do and a better wheel and tyre combo, both reversible but will help on the mountain passes.

That's strange, I was just about to suggest a Mercedes W114 280 Coupe (although a Pagoda would be plus chic je pense) or a Morgan. There's always the W107 SL but I wouldn't call it chic, and it's perhaps a little new. Having grown up 'pon the continent, I would suggest something British, weird and expensive-looking for the ultimate posing win. Head down to the Riviera and everyone's got a Ferrari/Lambo/Aston - old and new. Ultimate game is awarded to those championing obscurity. It's the only way to be exclusive out there. Silver or grey for me. I've certainly not seen any 400i or GT for under £15k anywhere?

Which is exactly why I bought a Pagoda! Took it to the Yorkshire Dales a couple of weeks ago, and whilst the Buttertubs pass isn't exactly the French Riviera, a '60s sports convertible is the ideal car to tackle it in - wonderful stuff! I would say you could get one for £20k, but I can't find any. I think they must have gone up in value since I bought mine! For comfort get something French For speed get something Italian For reliability get something German... For breaking down in a pile of smoke get something Brittish I'll get my coat... get a DAF 55 marathon Variomatic or ask the DAF museum to lend the DAF Siluro to you...

An F-body "Rockford Files" ride would be seriously cool, or go earlier F-body for a 'vert version.

Well if we were talking about chic Japanese cars to cruise Europe it would have to be: The Toyota 2000GT. They even made two convertibles: As seen in "You Only Live Twice". Sorry, did you say £200k or £20k....

So unless someone wishes to exclude fine Japper tin, dunno why, then we'd have to include them! Still not sure why pov-spec Japper tin ain't seen as chic by people here! Here of all places! Unless we are stipulating that pov-spec Japper cars are not chic? Is that it?

I don't think anyones doubting a povo spec car can be chic, but most of em are hardly a great idea for cruising europe, something that'll cruise quietly, without effort at 70-80mph and something you can sit in all day without getting hot and sweaty (or cold and shivery in the alps) and something with lots of comfort, big engines make for a big heavy comfy car usually as well as making the heater chuck out a proper amount of heat.

The most Chic of Japanese cars are not really available in Europe. And the 2000GT is crazy expensive, although very chic. European cars just tend to be more in tune with driving down the coast roads of the South of France because that is pretty much what they are designed to do Not that many British cars fit the bill either, although there are a few Surprised we've not had more and ^^^ My Father in law took one of those through Europe in the 60's .. very cool. I guess these are ludicrous money now,.. but chic european cruising Need to look in my Stars and Their Cars book to see what stylish 60's starlets drove

My great aunt and her family emigrated to to Oz in the 50's they drove through Europe, down through to the bottom of Africa and got on a boat from there, somewhere there is a pic of a split rear window beetle in a desert with a ridiculous amount of stuff on the roof rack, no one seems to know where the box of pics have gone.
