In the USA the Empi Hydraulic Park lock is legal for the street. ( popular on sandrails, etc) May not be legal in your neck of the woods, though.  Not legal for U.K. use as a parking brake sadly. Has to be a separate mechanical/electro-mechanical system on a car. |

The position was good but there wasn't enough space between two seats to comfortably get your hand down to operate it. Yeah I know what you're saying and like you say we plan to keep the shape simple and fit it in a way that the seats don't have to come out to remove parts of it etc. Advice is always greatly appreciated!  Fair enough! Not easy to tell ergonomics from a pic and if it doesn't work then it doesn't work! I know it's a bit mental but what about a 2CV handbrake lever? Could be fun on a car like this and a good theft deterrent as nobody knows how to use them.  |

I have already solved the handbrake situation but all these suggestions are still good knowledge to hold for the future! Dad has a P1800 so I thought about the outside handbrake lever however the seats are so wide it means the door and handbrake would occupy the same space which isn't ideal.  Having a car in the wings that was the basis for a lot of kit cars back in the day, and knowing the tunnel in said car will be getting bastardised I cut out what I needed, made a start on frame that bolts in and job done! Next job was a bulkhead, there was nothing wrong with the fibreglass but you can't weld it and I wanted to be able to add strength around the pedals etc.    Some welding, bashing and English wheeling later we'd made a metal bulkhead and managed to cut the steering hole in the right place this time! (Definitely didn't cut it wrong on the old fibreglass, honest.) It's not the prettiest thing but not a show car and the bonnet will be on 9 times out of 10. Braithwaite. |

Merry Christmas! Pedals got mounted up not long after sorting the bulkhead, couple of hole saws, some re-enforcing plate and it's a few more bolts away from being fully rigid. Had to straighten out the clutch pedal and modify it a little bit but otherwise it was a fairly straightforward job as we'd already planned the layout on an off cut of ply wood.   Short but sweet updates at the moment as it's Christmas. Braithwaite. |

Sticking to the plan of making both ends first then joining in the middle I moved onto the fuel tank. The plan was to refit it into the original location and after cutting up the original it was decided to just save the pickup and make a tank from scratch. (I still need to add the filler tubes I know.)     Some hammering, welding and English wheeling later we'd got a tank made up, luckily there's no pick up pump so it's purely a pick up and return so much easier to accommodate, it's an estimate 12gallon tank which should easily see a range of around 350ish miles and as this isn't a motorway cruiser and the engine is hauling half the weight that should mean we don't need to stop at every petrol station unlike the V8 counter parts  . |

Sooooo Christmas happened but not much on this, I finished up the fuel tank so now it can get filled with water to leak check and I fitted the pickup gubbins to check it still fits and clears everything, which it does.     I've temporarily refitted the front struts as the fence post coil-overs kept dropping out of place and felt a bit too Heath Robison even for me. This evening we've used an 80 something mm hole saw to put two holes in the bulkhead to allow the Kia wiring rubbers to be used and so we can start plugging things back in to see if it'll kick back into life... fingers crossed... Nice! Getting this running again will be immediately motivating! I went a very similar route on my hotrod build and never got it to that stage and fell out of love with it big time  Keep at it dude! |

Better to check tank with something thinner than water, panel wipe or some thinners etc as petrol will find holes that water may not. Rubbing some talc/chalk dust etc on the welds and sloshing the liquid around to cover the weld areas - the powder will show very quickly any damp spots.

I use a precision air pressure regulator and put 1.5 psi in after sealing the tank up. This is much more than the fuel will impart. Use soapy water to leak test. If you have a leak you are not welding a tank that has had thinners in. |

I am loathed to pressurise this and will probably go down the thinners route. A quick update, been a little held up waiting for parts and spending time thinking/planning solutions and trying to pre-empt some other issues. We've started making a very rudimental roll hoop, just to give the body some structure, obviously in an accident in this it's fairly certain to be game over, but at least this gives a sturdy place to mount seatbelts etc. Not finished yet, got some more bars to add but it's a start! Well it's been a little while, Christmas happened and then we had some head scratching to do but we've now got this:  A structure of sorts to help keep the occupants a little further from death and also to help mount seat belts etc. onto. I know it's no racing cage and probably isn't going to do a whole lot because of the lack of triangles blah blah blah but this wasn't meant to be a racing car and if a Hot Rod doesn't make you feel a little sketchy its not a Hot Rod.     For the rear of the cage we had to add a cross member and some outriggers. 50x100x3mm box iirc. I'm no weld magician but these welds are starting to look much better, I've had plenty of welding practise and that's not to say the rest is pigeon poo, but I always want them to be the stacked dimes kind of welds and feels like it's getting there! By the end of this project it'll look mint, all ready for the Ital! That's all for now! Braithwaite |
