Hi, It's about time I introduced my other project. I bought the base car in 1991, and it has been a life long project. In fact it has been my only project until recently, when I got the mahindra Jeep. It is based around a series 3 88" Landrover. The running gear consists of a 300TDI, LT77S gearbox, coil sprung axles and PAS, on a galvanised chassis. I build it for winch challenge competition, and for this it is fitted with 35" simex tyres, detroit locking diffs with 4.75 CROWNwheel and pinions and Ashcroft drive shafts. The front winch is PTO driven, the rear is electric. There is a full cage with 4 point harnesses, a snorkel and a trip computer for offroad stages. A picture from the not too distant past: I got a bit demotivated with it, so it has been in the garage for a few years, while i started my Jeep project. But I started working on it again to get it MOT ready shortly. The MOT is the short term plan, as we need another car that works in our family (in case one of our daily cars fail). Long term plan is to get new panels on it and a paint job, as the battle scars are looking very serious now and puts (some) people off. We have been on many off road adventures with it, and some of the best times of my life were had with this landy. Can anyone guess where this is? Thanks for reading, Daan

That looks properly serious. Purposeful. Like it'd steal your dinner money, then make you walk to the shops to buy it sweets with your own funds. I like it.
As for the where is it question, I'm guessing somewhere abroad?

I like that a lot. Traditional 88" hybrid that's been worked!
I'm sure I've seen pics of it elsewhere at offroad events?
Wild guess I'll say Malaysia?

It was on the Rainforest Challenge in Malaysia. It was the event that I build the car for originally. I did several other event in the UK with it, and took it to the Ladoga trophy in Russia. Last event was Croatia trophy in 2016. But these event are now dominated by space framed buggys, and lots and lots of money spent. So my old series has been retired from the major events unfortunately. Now it will become my classic car.. Daan

Daan That'll be why it looks familiar, photobombing in the background of some of the global challenge events in the glossy mags! There was a tv series quite a few years back that had some reporting of the Rainforest Challenge and followed a bobtail Range Rover. That looked like so much fun

That looked like so much fun That was on discovery, I think, and the rangy belonged to Simon Buck from Devon 4x4: He attempted it several times, eventually wining in 2002. In 2003, we hatched a plan to send both our cars to malaysia in a 40ft container, but simon had to bail out due to work commitments at the last moment. So I ended up paying for a 20ft container myself! Great times though and no regrets, the best event we did: Daan

Yep that'll be it. It was like a 5 minute segment of the Range Rover V8 racing through the jungle like a rally stage!

Following this, I'm not the biggest of landrover fans on paper (I used to own an SJ, you know how it is ) haha! But really like this, I bet the RFC was some experience!! I'd love to take my patrol to Iceland at some point, but if I thought I could go to RFC one day, I'd jump at it!! Once things are all over and back to 'normal' you should bring it up to Scotland for Mudfest, it's held at Drumclog offroad centre, it's a friendly bunch! You'd have a great weekend

A short update on my land rover; It finally was in a state to offer it to my local MOT station. A lot of work has been done on the mechanicals of it; basically, every oil seal on the car that meets mud was leaking. It was the result of 8 days of competing in Croatian mud; This is a mixture of mud and clay and made a mess of the seals and their running surface. So I fitted 8 new wheel bearings with seals and stub axles and replaced all the seals on the transfer box and the gearbox. The wear bush on the gearbox output shaft (it is an LT77S box) was particularly entertaining but got done in the end: I I also pulled the diffs to check them over. I did tighten the main bearings a bit and replaced the oil seals, then put them back in. A rare sight: My landy in the MOT bay, last seen in 2017. Anyway, the MOT man found a few more things, but on Thursday, I got a pass! Well happy it now can be used, thanks for looking! Daan
