Well it's been a little while, Christmas happened and then we had some head scratching to do but we've now got this:  A structure of sorts to help keep the occupants a little further from death and also to help mount seat belts etc. onto. I know it's no racing cage and probably isn't going to do a whole lot because of the lack of triangles blah blah blah but this wasn't meant to be a racing car and if a Hot Rod doesn't make you feel a little sketchy its not a Hot Rod.     For the rear of the cage we had to add a cross member and some outriggers. 50x100x3mm box iirc. I'm no weld magician but these welds are starting to look much better, I've had plenty of welding practise and that's not to say the rest is pigeon poo, but I always want them to be the stacked dimes kind of welds and feels like it's getting there! By the end of this project it'll look mint, all ready for the Ital! That's all for now! Braithwaite Really good to see the updated story. Welding will do just fine. |

Today was spent sifting through wiring and plugging things back in to see if the engine would turn over, there's no fuel or coolant lines hooked up but if it turns over then it's no been immobilised. After some teething issues it lives! After moving it around and cutting bits of loom off we haven't totally knackered it and now can focus on making it run and drive! Very chuffed!  Braithwaite. |

Could you stick a diagonal across the rear legs somewhere, or are you hoping to keep a boot of sorts?
More to help with body flex / rattling than anything.

Better to check tank with something thinner than water, panel wipe or some thinners etc as petrol will find holes that water may not. Rubbing some talc/chalk dust etc on the welds and sloshing the liquid around to cover the weld areas - the powder will show very quickly any damp spots. I use a precision air pressure regulator and put 1.5 psi in after sealing the tank up. This is much more than the fuel will impart. Use soapy water to leak test. If you have a leak you are not welding a tank that has had thinners in. The air pressure is the way tanks are tested for type approval purposes. Doesn't have to be a lot of pressure, just make sure it holds a very low positive pressure (or even a vacuum) for a significant period of time without the pressure changing. Plan is to keep a boot area, I'd like to have gone all out on building a proper cage but it's never going to be raced and for what it'll be used for would just be adding weight it doesn't need. |

The cage isn't totally finished, the main hope is going to get corner gussets like you've suggested as they'll double up as seatbelt mounting points. We want to keep the windows as clear of tubes as possible but I will look into a way of bracing it if possible. |

Strangely I have just bought a 2005 Sorrento of the same spec as my parts hauler and tip run heap.
I have no plans to stick a plastic body on it.

it’s probably already been said
but the way things are going around modified cars this is going to be the way forward build it legal to save any future issues.
i keep seeing rods buggies kit cars for sale that are registered as the original donar car probably worse now there is MOT exemption and 9/10 there wouldn’t be issues but in the events of an accident you can imagine the insurance nightmare.
most popular is 356 speedster still registered as a beetle would love one but really wouldn’t want the legalities come into play

The rules have been in place for years and are not hard to understand. I don't care what other people do but my junk is all legal. The peace of mind is priceless.

This and my other project Morris Ital V8 will end up on the Q plate, I don't care about the reg number, these two things are built by people of questionable knowledge so taking it for an annual safety check is fine with me. crockpot 10/10 DO NOT put a plastic body on it, it's a ballache and an exercise I will not be repeating in a hurry... While on the subject of IVA stuff, can anyway help me with seat stuff? Can I fit homemade bomber seats or do the seats need CE marks? blackpopracing you seem the man in the know! Braithwaite. |

The BIVA manual is clear on seats. They need to satisfy strength requirements, they must have a headrest to meet the minimum dimensions,tilt mechanisms must be of suitable design. There is no other standards to meet.
Bomber seats are fine, if fixed and non tilting they just need a headrest to dimensions (a separate one is ok) and you'll be fine.
I have a copy of the manual for my build, I also have a notebook with separate sections for each of the manual sections (if they apply) which I make notes in as I go to ensure I don't miss anything.
Edit. If you use seats with built in seatbelts it gets more involved.
