just found this. When i started work in COUGH 1990 COUGH!!! a lot of the guys had beech boxes where i worked as we had a independent autopro /proto etc dealer as well as snap on. Taskmaster was also sold through partco in the 1980"s too. I do love old tools and boxes..

I seem to remember that Brown Brothers and Partco were (became ??) the same company, Nigel

If he doesn't mind, and you get chance, can you take a pic? If his is branded beach, did he import it? Does he know the history of it? I'm quite interested in what exactly was imported to the UK, where, when, and by who. Oh, hang on, I'm assuming your UK, you might not be! Yup, am UK - south coast. I'm hoping to see him in the next week or so, and will have a closer look at it. Some of his stuff was new to him, some is very old (e.g. a 1930s / 40s era gear cutting machine which he still uses). Could have been imported by him though, as in the '80s he was running a Class One offshore powerboat team which included events in the USA, and would have been very easy to cart something like that back with the boat & all its gear. I was down there earlier in the week, and it is indeed a Beach, complete with made in Canada markings on it too. He bought it from Snap-On, as their rep in a van made regular visits to his works at the time (so would have been in the '80s).

Do you remember roughly how many drawers his has? I'm wondering if the whole range was imported. They did a few different base boxes (mine is the biggest) and a few different top boxes (mine is sort of medium). I think the most common set up is a smaller base box than mine and a larger top box.

I'll try to take a pic next week. In terms of what in the range was being imported, his one also has an additional (fold down?) side shelf which looks like it is a matching part rather than a modification.

They also did side boxes. As well as the normal top/bottom boxes they did a smaller range and an engineers range. A pic would be good, always nice to see them. I've read there tends to be more beach branded stuff in the south east of the country and more autopro branded stuff in the Midlands. I don't think it was widespread throughout the country. Probably just a couple of distributors.

He bought it from a 2nd hand tool shop probably 20/25 years ago, there was an identical one for sale on eBay about 10(ish)years ago both in the Durham area. I've got a taskmaster top and bottom box set up,the top box came from Stockton and the bottom from Blyth both purchased via ebay

That will probably be this one then I'd really like one of these, but it would make my stack too high. Maybe one to put on a side bench if one comes up. I think this may be the same drawer lay out as the Waterloo box that was recently on ebay.

Well now the Beach owners club now has two members The Info I remember In the 80's Snap on's only competition was independent tool dealers who sold assorts, but usually Beach or Sykes boxes. The Only Autopro I have seen is in the Crewe area of Cheshire, I cant remember who told me but I think it was a chain of independents who no doubt bought together for better Discounts, tool sales was a very different world back then My holy grail would be to find a side cab near home, only seen one and it was hundreds of miles away

I have no space for a side box but I'm always hunting. If i find one ill get it for you. As you know, that b215 cabinet is what I'm after. I'm so glad you put all those pages up, I really couldn't be bothered to find all the images and then post them here with my phone!!

Those enclosed cantilever boxes, b418, are nice too. Maybe I'll try and get one of those as well!

I am going to try and get some Beach stickers made if any one wants some at cost? Just the shield logo like on the left of this image The Image shows the newer stuff they made just before they closed for the second time, the handles look like early Proto ones, now Proto boxes are very rare, but most people favour the big Snap on etc, but you can get some older Mac very cheaply now as they just arnt as popular

Well thanks to a tip-off from that there VW bloke, off the back of a terrible listing and a slow to reply seller, then over 4hrs of driving, I have this. It’s a Proto hence it coming my way. And is actually in pretty good condition. It has roller drawers unlike my later proto, and I think any other box at this period. All the missing handles and screws turned up inside it, which is a bit of a touch. It has a few kinks and small dents that need sorting but is otherwise pretty tidy. The surprising thing about it is it’s age. The ‘flying lady’ logo dates this box to between 1948 and 1963, so quite an early box. The other one I have with the plainer oval logo is between about 1963 and 1984.
