Welcome to my new project a non-running 1990 Volvo 740 2.3 GLE Estate. I saw the car yesterday and bought it there and then. Honest seller, good advert and seems a solid car in good shape. Like any 30 year old car there is going to be some good and bad things. Bad: No history at all. Previous owner bought it cheap, never worried about the history. Has had some previous work done on some rust areas, but underneath all looks solid. Car doesn’t start. Will crank over and almost catch, but I suspect it’s the battery or spark plugs No MOT as it ran out in December and sat in his field since. Sunroof and 1 window is sticky on closing Headlining sagging a little Good bits Bodywork looks clean and no accident damage Underneath the car looks good, no rust from what I can see on the sills etc Full leather interior, with only the drivers seat needing some stitching done Brand new exhaust system 4 brand new tyres 2.3 engine so more power and auto box which is supposed to be pretty good Hopefully getting it collected next week, then I can get it home and try and get it fixed up and on the road. The OH said that any project needs to go in the garage as we don’t have room on the drive. Let’s hope the land yacht fits in ok. My dad always had Volvos when we where kids 240, 740, 940 and my mum had a 340. Spent hours sat with him fixing them up or doing the servicing. He past down all his tools and knowledge to me, so hopefully it will bring back some good memories of him and I working on cars. These are the pics from when i bought the car, will get more on its arrival. Unclear on the plans for it at the moment, but obviously it needs to get MOT'd and on the road. I think a set of lowering springs would improve the looks and perhaps move to steelies, but unsure. Fingers crossed getting it on the road is only a cheap fix.

The car arrived early on Saturday morning, dropped off by a lovely bloke called John. A quick chat revealed he actually works for Citroen moving cars between dealerships and this was helping fill in the gaps between jobs. The plan was to spend the afternoon trying to get her started and see how she runs. Unfortunately I managed to badly cut my hand on some barbed wire walking the dogs later that morning so put a stop to any car activities. I thought I would use the time to take a look over the car and see what I have bought. The engine is a B230F and under the bonnet it looks pretty clean. It looks to have had an oil leak at some point as the block is covered in oil, so will give it a bit of a clean up at some point. I will also change the seal on the oil cap as no doubt this is worn. The rest of the car looks solid, just very grim on the outside and needs a proper deep clean to remove the dirt and grime. Inside is no better and needs a proper valet to remove the dirt. The drivers seat has a split in the seam on base where the stitching has come undone, and its come away from the frame. I can get it re-stitched, but unsure how to affix it properly. No rips of tears in the other seats and seems in good condition. Apparently the sunroof can get jammed when closing, and the rear window is slow to go up, so these will need investigation. Also the rear wiper doesn't work so might need a new motor. I also need to reattach some of the trim panels as these have come loose over time. Looking in the glovebox I found some CD's from the previous owner, not a bad selection. He was a sound engineer and loves his music. Also in the glovebox I found some history with the car which was handy. From what I can see it was purchased by the last owner in 2018 from Dorset and lived for the last couple of years in South Kensington before the couple moved to the New Forest. I don't have any of the original booklets on the car, but from the receipts I can see its had the following in terms of work: 2018 Cambelt + Tensioner and Front Seals ARB Bushes Handbrake Cables Thermostat 2 Rear Shocks New Front bushes, control arms and drop links Gearbox and Rear Diff Oil change Rocker Cover Gasket Brake Fluid Change 2019 2 x Tyres 1 x Exhaust System as the original cat was stolen 1 x Radiator 1 x Battery I have all the service items already so will replace the sparks, oil and filters. I haven't bought HT leads, so will see how I get on. The big issue I can notice is the drivers footwell is wet, so need to check where the leak is coming from. The seats need to come out for cleaning, so will remove the carpet and underlay and get it dried out properly. Hopefully it hasn't rotted the floor.

Good to see the progress on this after your post on the volvoforums Wet footwell could be sunroof drains, heater matrix of valve (for non-AC cars like this). Could also by the footwell vents to the front wing area, mine leaked there on the passenger side. Looking forward to seeing this progress! Edit: if you buy HT leads in future, the OE Bougicord ones are recommended.

Fingers crossed its a simple easy fix.

How is this one coming along? Currently been sat in my garage not being used. WFH full time, and having access to another car means it doesn’t get used. actually going up for sale this week.

Well cars are no fun when they're just standing around not being used or wrenched on..
Hopefully whatever project you end up with next, will be more fun.

They are one of the usual Volvo factory alloys - just look a bit odd as the massive polished centre caps are missing.

Love the wheels. Never seen them before. This the car on the complete alloys. They have a centre cap which was missing on these, hard to find but luckily someone had a spare set in their garage. They are called Rigel Alloys.
