A lot of the last few weeks has been spent mucking about with various diff calculations and trying to read up on what will and won’t work.
One issue that I’ve come back to a few times is that this car would have had a small case differential originally and, at the very least, we are needing to go up to a medium size case.
Plan at the moment is to collect an e28 525e diff that I have found in Birmingham. Then get most of the back end from a dead e30 325 and put it all together. We will need the larger stub axles, CV joints, half-shafts, and axles from a 325. In addition I will probably need a 325 diff case to get it to fit.
*If* that all works I will be very happy. The car will then do 70mph @ 3000rpm and 152mph @ 6750rpm. I don’t think I’ll need more than that.

Sounds like a good plan. E30 325 rear end with the E28 525e diff. You can get medium case rear covers quite easily if you need to swap one as most Z3s other than the 1.9 have medium case diffs in E30 style rear axles (not sure on the track width, but they might be an alternative if you're struggling to find an E30 version, although they might be 5-stud...) But yeah, good plan

No real progress on the diff front at the moment. Got two potential ones just waiting on people to get back to me, hopefully this week. In the meantime I realised I had not uploaded the rest of the pictures from its time with the fabricators. They built a lovely manifold for it. Feels like a shame to wrap it and even more of a shame to hide the turbo in a blanket but I think we are going to need to to keep under bonnet temperatures under control. With the engine in for the fabricators the intercooler pipes were test fitted too. Please ignore the state of the engine bay and the red pipes. It will all be pulled out again soon, cleaned up and with black piping. Intercooler is in and sits well though. Also bought some wheels. They're going to be too small beacause of the height of the engine and how low the sump sits but they will be nice to look at. I need to find some 17" wheels really.

On the wheel front, could you not just run a fatter sidewall to make up the difference in height? Those are dead cool wheels...

Thanks, I had wanted a set of Ronal Turbos for so long I was just pleased to have them to look at! Annoyingly they really are going to be too small. The taller sidewall is a good idea and we looked at that but because of the low sump you'd need a really big sidewall or for the car to be at standard ride height. Neither of those ideas float for me. Nice wheels... Cheers, was good to meet you and chat cars. Sadly I have now passed these wheels on to a very good friend who has put them on his Ibiza. They look great there too. I may need to buy another set just to have them in the shed though!

Progress has been steadily happening with this build and the next few weeks should see it really starting to take shape.
Here is what has happened so far to get us to where we are today. This might not all be in order as it covers the last six or seven months.
Found some awesome seats in Birmingham, had a friend pop over to pick them up from the dodgiest sounding geeza ever who actually turned out to be great and real petrol head.
Shown here with the lovely chromoly gear stick which finally arrived from Finland (not in it's final position!)
Also sourced new suspension for it and front brakes at the same time. Going with Spax krypton gas adjustable dampers with 60mm lowering springs. The brakes are new genuine BMW girling calipers with yellow stuff pads and EBC drilled and grooved discs, we'll see how they cope once up and running.
On the subject of brakes; we had space issues with the original brake servo so have got this Wilwood one instead. Lovely bit of kit. Will have further heat protection in the final build. This is a mock up at the moment.
Also finally sorted some wheels!
Compomotive TH1681, freshly refurbed and powder coated in the perfect size and fit for an e30 wearing some very sticky Yokohama Advan tyres. A very lucky find indeed.

Now if you could weld the rear doors up and plate the rear windows to turn it into a van you'd pretty much have my perfect E30...
Progress is good! This is gonna be epic when it's done

Cheers Wanted to get something subtle that might confuse the odd person too! Now if you could weld the rear doors up and plate the rear windows to turn it into a van you'd pretty much have my perfect E30... Progress is good! This is gonna be epic when it's done Ha! That would be quite cool. Like the mk2 Astra estates. Always liked those. Truth be told I have been considering putting a nice interior in this when done and using it as a road car. It sure yet, will see how much fun it is stripped out as a track toy first.

Next on the list for the e30 was a trip to the fabricators. They were responsible for making sure the shell was sound and that the gearbox would work as planned amongst other things. Here it is looking mean and moody on the way there. Having spent over a decade inside the car is pretty solid thankfully. We will be moving the battery to the boot and the outer floor on the o/s needed some new metal love. The bastardised drive shaft was also made up and balanced ready to be fitted to the new diff and gearbox. And the gearbox was tidied up where we had cut into it to make adjustments for the starter motor to fit. The hole for the gearstick was also plated up and the new gearstick mounted, ready for action!

That gear stick looks like it'll be so satisfying to shift, love it.

Big steps forwards! Like it Thanks! It’s really starting to move quickly now. Next two weeks should be very busy. That gear stick looks like it'll be so satisfying to shift, love it. I am ridiculously excited about that gear stick. Hope it works as well as it looks bookmarked Thanks. Hope it makes good reading.

Okay. Engine build time.
The block and cylinder head are back from the machine shop where it has been acid dipped and prepped for the build.
With the block clean it was then prepped and painted to keep it all looking fresh.
New gaskets, piston rings and super strong ARP bolts ready to keep the increased pressure in the right places.
Originally we were going to leave the cylinder head as it was a know good one. It was pointed out that if we were going to all this effort with the rest of the engine it would be daft to leave that out of a freshen up. Turned out to be a very good idea..

Block looks great, and lucky catch on the valve. Yes! So lucky on that. To be fair to the engine they are super tough and it may have survived for a bit like that but it would have been a right nuisance if that gave in once we started using some boost. The ECU is already mapped and ready to go for this engine so once it has been run in for a bit it'll be running big boost straight away.

More things painted as well as the underside has been cleaned and protected.
As mentioned before the underside was in really good condition for the age owing to the time spent indoors. At some point the car will need some fresh paint to get it perfect but that is a long way down the list of current priorities. Here are some before and afters.
Gearbox also received some prettying up. Next, hopefully more exciting, update will be in the next few days.
