Just a little update. Popped in to the Newcastle workshop on my way to Scotland. Gave me a chance to have a look at the progress so far as well as some of the other completed projects. Here it is with the daft turbo waiting to go on. Car is due at the fabricators next week. Once that is done things should start progressing swiftly again. And here are a few other cars built by the same guy.

It's always a shame to have to farm out work you'd like to do yourself, but the pleasure of having the finished item sooner with less stress is often worth the trade-off. This is going to be a handful when she's done. Love a saab and love an e39 touring too

It is a shame but having gone and looked at the things he is building and had my arm twisted for more power I am really excited about the direction it is going in.
Today it went off to the fabricators so will be waiting for them to do their thing and then it can start being put together. All very exciting and moving way quicker than I ever would!

Have just ordered the intercooler kit, external wastegate, a new clutch slave cylinder and this ridiculously good looking gearstick..
Have also been taking advantage of having an empty garage to have a good tidy up. Took that metal racking apart and repainted it all black to match the wheel rack.
Next job is to board and insulate the roof.

Thanks mate, I am actually getting a little nervous about how mental it is going to be. Especially as brakes aren't on the list until next year..
Hope your awesome Beema-Volvo is going well.

Few steps forward, few steps back.. as it ever was. Was sitting thinking the other day that I really should calculate the gear ratios and so on with the new 'box. The Omega 'box we were going to use is a little more tried and tested as a route for going RWD with the Saab engine. The e36 gearbox we went for has been done before but to a lesser extent.
Using this website: www.blocklayer.com/rpm-gear.aspx I put in the gear ratios for the e36 gearbox, the wheel size and the standard diff ratio that the 320i tourer had.. Here is what I came up with. This is 5th gear at 6000rpm on the standard diff: Now, there are two ways to look at this. Firstly that it would be absolutely hilarious for about 10 minutes like that. Secondly, that I need to find a longer geared diff pretty bloody quickly.
After a bit of research it turned out that there was a diff that would suit my needs perfectly. It was from a model called the 325e that was sold in America and that I had almost no chance of ever finding.
A little more research found a slightly less perfect diff was also fitted to the 2.8 Z3 as it shared its rear end with the e30.
Hopefully this one may turn out to have what I need which is a 3.15 diff (or even one with an LSD if all my luck comes in..) Assuming my calculations are correct (!) then this should give me a more usable car although still slightly shorter geared than I would really want: All this has slowed down the fabricators a little as they were also meant to be doing some work on the prop shaft. As it turns out the e30 had several diffs which were all as wide as each other but different lengths. See this link from the ever useful e30zone.
In other, positive, news here are some things that are happening and moving forward right now. A manifold has been started for the new turbo to sit on: And the gearbox now has somewhere nice to rest itself on:

E34 tds has a 2.65:1 ratio for low motorway revs.😉

Thanks, that is a great shout. I understand that the internals of that diff are the same too. Problem is that would involve opening up the diff and swapping bits round which isn't an option right now.
My plan at the moment is to find a Z3 diff, run it for a bit and then look into getting one from one of the diesels, adding an LSD and having it built into the e30 case.

E34 tds diff is a direct fit if you swap the diff cover. I used it under my E30 with a tds swap.

Yeah I've got an E34 diff in waiting for the Triumph 2000 and it's identical except the rear cover. The E36 325tds also uses a medium case with 2.56 gears, but is in a different style case so would need swapping. Useful if you're having trouble finding an E34 diff.

Thank you both. Really got the pressure on now to find a decent diff as all the plumbing and electrics are being put together from Monday.

The E36 2.56 is what i use under my alfa giulia 😊 with my long overdrive fifth gear i now get 100kmh(63mph) at 2000rpm with 195-50-15 tyres.

Not necessarily. I don´t know if the US version was different, but the 325e (or eta) was available in germany, maybe europe, too. It was actually a 327, measured by capacity. That´s why a lot of them were used as parts donors by 325i owners, simply for the block. Maybe the unwanted gear boxes still can be found somewhere?

They did a 525e as well for the E28. Not sure what ratio they had but I expect it might be similar.

I wouldn’t mind something in that direction for this. Thanks, good to know. After a bit of research it turned out that there was a diff that would suit my needs perfectly. I spent a bit of time looking for one and have no doubt that if time wasn’t pressing on as it is with this then it might be a solution next time I am abroad. Sadly a big issue with getting anything from Europe now is that you seem to pay twice as much as you once did. Really frustrating. They did a 525e as well for the E28. Not sure what ratio they had but I expect it might be similar. Bingo! Thanks, super idea. It’s what I *think* we have landed on now. Now this is a very cool project. Cheers! Really kind of you to say.
