Painted the bits i cant get at with the spring in, spring back in, replaced the leading edge of the wheel arch which had been missing altogether, and replaced the outer arch. Now need to remove the rear quarter window to repair a localised rust spot.

Still moving on, drivers side floor is pretty much done, though on scraping some filler off uncovered what looks like impact damage to the floor near the transmission tunnel. Theres a chassis rail right under it so how this happened is a mystery. Answers on a postcard... Slight split in the metal, but no rust.

My money would be on someone trying to improve access to something underneath, fuel lines, transfer box linkage etc.

Its hard to see in the photo but its too creased to be hammered or pried. Its right next to the front propshaft uj, but no other witness marks to suggest that let go at any point. Its also right over the fuel lines so must remember to move those before welding the split.

Floor is completed, sealed and painted with my rather optimistic colour matched paint. I am sure it matches somerhing but not my cars colour so it can get pride of place under the carpet. Seat back in and a quick fit of the panels to remind myself how it fits. I am tempted to ditch the floor sponge and stick some spund proofing on. Repairs now underway to the far end of the boot floor, and found my rear brake calipers are so worn that the brake pads rub on the bell of the disc.

Popped the screen out and found some more rust. Cracked the screen but no big deal as that was due to be replaced due to a couple of big bulls eyes. A peak under the decker panel did not look too bad but not removed it yet. Dashboard out and replaced the screen lip. Looks like there has been some leakage for quite some time as the dash support has suffered as well. Thats a really complex shape so not sure how to do that yet. The build quality in these is really poor, there is a 5-10mm gap in the windscreen lip, that looks like it was simply bridged with sealant. And the a pillar also has a hole in it, but it looks reasonably ok to fix.

Yes these certainly seem to rot, not sure i would have bought this one had i known how bad it was, but it has been a good hobby! Today was the pillar repair. Multiple localised rot spots. Done the large easy one and now onto the tricky bit. Having cut a hole in it, it does at least allow visibility to confirm this is local, and rotted from the outside in, and is solid elsewhere. Will need a skim of filler as my flap wheel skills are not there yet, though it could be because i use too low a grade.

Another few hours at it and some more progress. Finished the rusty bit i knew about and found another one. That feeling of optimism thinking thats only one pinhole i can fill that with a quick weld blob, followed by reality.... Then onto the part I really struggle with. Filler. Last photo shows a guide coat, and its not very flat yet. This part gets some textured black paint so I am lucky this will likely hide the worst but will try to get it better. Will watch some youtube tonight to get some more tips.

Its not perfect but good enough. If it was a classic maserati rather than a high mileage patchwork diesel I would have carried on, but tis rust free and thanks to satin black paint not too painful on the eye. The decker panel needs to come off before i can suggest thats the last of the rust, but it is now hard to find, which is a novelty. It'll be all over by Christmas! Said someone once.

More paint and the shock absorber back on. Then spent some time putting my long suffering work light back together as I dropped it one time too many.

Brake lines done, replaced one of the rear calipers, more painting. Wax arrived so will be giving everything a good covering. Need to get the screen in so will ring around a few local firms. The wiring for a heated screen exits so tempted to get one.

Took the decker panel off expecting to find some new rusty horror, but no its absolutely fine. For once mine seems to be better than average. Some disintegrated filter sponge and some very light surface rust but no holes. Cleaned up and waxed and all put back.

Boot floor test fit, need to fabricate a tank strap and secure the floor supports before rivetting this back on. All the holes line up on the rear cross member and floor so was chuffed with that until i noticed i have replicated the slight wonkyness the previous person did...

Test fitted the front end. Grill did not fit too well cue much frantic measuring. Eventually traced to a combination of pattern parts not being quite right and so the front body crossmember needing 5mm shaving off each end. Now fits, not that great but as well as it did before. Indicator is just sitting rather than attached hence the wonkiness. Rain then stopped play for the rest of tge afternoon.

The lower part of the grill sits under bumper I believe. Least it does on mine. Might sit a bit better on the lamps ?
