Well today went well.
Firstly I had a couple of jobs to do on her golf. And I hate working on that pile of curse word so I've been putting it off.
It's anti roll bar bushes arrived yesterday though and it's been knocking and the mot is next month so they needed doing.
Drove onto the ramps. And of course the anti roll bar is bolted on top of the subframe so you can't get to it.
Got the brackets undone but couldn't split them to remove the Bush. It turns out you need to drill out some spot welds or something to separate them. To do that you need to drop the whole front subframe and completely remove the anti roll bar. Absolutely rediculous when you consider these bushes last 30k at best. Did I mention I hate this car.
Ill just have to hope the mot tester doesn't notice it.
What he will notice however is that she has been driving around on a flat tyre and scrubbed off the shoulders. They're completely bald.
There's only about 3mm of tread on the fronts anyway but I could have stuck them on the back and waited till Jan. She's an idiot.
Seeing as the audi is U/S at the moment and has new tyres on all round she can have those for the moment. They look better on the golf anyway
And while I was on the back left I cut off the last remaining brake dust shield which has succumbed to differential metal corrosion between the alloy dust shield and steel bolts. The engineers at VW are complete and utter idiots
Anyway, enough of that embarrassment of a car and onto something a bit more retro
ZE AUDI!
Looks slightly better on the golf wheels although it's not going anywhere on those tyres. Not that it's going anywhere anyway at this rate
So the non starting fault.
After cranking I removed a plug and it was dry.
Cracked off a line here at the fuel distributor and it was dry. Probably because I've changed the fuel filter
To bleed these you need to pop a fuse into the top of a relay, here
This then runs the fuel pump the whole time the ignition is on. (these cars don't prime with ignition on)
That done you can crack off each injector at a time while holding open the air flap on the fuel distributor. Eventually we had air free fuel at each injector. These are mechanical injectors. No wiring.
Will it start?
No it bloody won't.
Hmmm.
Disconnected the pipe from the intercooler to the inlet plenum and fired a load of electrical cleaner up there. Still won't fire.
Spark?
Took plug 2 out. Cranked over. No spark.
Took coil ht lead off and replaced with no.2 lead and plug. Grounded plug, cranked over, no spark. So no spark from coil.
Also while cranking I'm getting a red oil can symbol. Presuming that means low oil pressure rather than level. Level is correct and there's oil pressure on the gauge. Checked all the sensors to do with oil and I haven't dislodged any plugs.
Checked the plug at the coil and I have power coming from one pin. The other 2 pins might be signal lines. Not sure just yet
One other bit of info is that there's this 5 pin yellow plug. Behind the dash. It comes off the same cable that goes to the plug that does all the computer in the dash and one pin is live with ignition on. I don't remember taking it off when I removed the dash cluster and I can't for the life of me find anywhere for it to go. I may have to remove the lower dash panel to have a look.
It would be a bit of a coincidence for the coil to be completely dead after being off the road for a week.
I think either that yellow plug does go somewhere or there's a plug loose somewhere.
Looks like the mini will be staying a bit longer. I'm tempted to keep the audi off the road for winter anyway. They'll start salting the roads soon.
I've also noticed while swapping wheels that the rubber covers on both fronts struts are split. So that needs doing as well.
In fact the only good thing that's come from today is that I think the eyeliner on the front headlights look quite good. I do prefer the golf wheels on it too. They're a temporary fit though
I think I'll remove the lower dash next time and see if there's something to plug into that yellow plug.
This is bugging me!
