At least you, erm, got rid of the alloys... they look alright on the golf Progress is progress, and it’s more than we’ve done! Cheers, I suppose I cna tick a fair bit of work off the list. Its frustrating though, especially as I don't have a decent data set for this thing, just the haynes Speaking of which. This is the diagram for the ignition in it Now I have replaced the thermoswitch at the bottom of the pic. It also suggests that it's looking for a signat from the brake switch, being an auto. I've been cranking from outside the car It also suggests that it's looking for "fault display" from the dash Some food for thought

Ivan from memory of when i worked at a dealership when these were current models the only thing that I recall was fuel pump relays. The foreman would ask for any 40a relay to use as as a subsitute.
Given the other problems you have i would assume you have disturbed some multi plug, or there is a fault on the instrument circuit board. Golfs used to suffer from them burning out and also the fuse board corroding.

The fuse board is worth looking at for preventative maintenance if nothing else. I have had the instrument circuit board out. If I've disturbed something there can it stop the car starting?

Those golf wheels do suit it, good luck on the fault finding sounds a bit of a PITA. James

Well my run of bad luck with this thing continues While trying to work out why I have no spark the other day, I pulled the king lead off the dizzy only to find out that the terminal had rusted into pieces. Definitely no spark with no king lead. The new set arrived this week. It turns out that they do not fit the normal terminal on spark plugs, you have to unscrew that and they connect directly to the thread instead. Unfortunately on my nice new iridium plugs, the terminals don't unscrew. This is when the swearing started. So whacked the old plugs back in, a set of those gimmicky Bosch ones with three electrodes. Hate those things. Still no spark. Power to the coil. The timing must be out. I couldn't find the timing mark on the flywheel when I changed the belt so I used the one on the front pulley, which is a harmonic damper. So cue 2 solid hours trying to find the flywheel timing mark. It's so inaccessible that I couldn't take a picture. After more swearing and chasing things that where being blown away in the high winds we have today, eventually I was able to scrape enough rust off the flywheel to discover the 0 indicating TDC. With the engine at TDC, sure enough the cam timing was off by one tooth, the dizzy ting mark off slightly too. While reading about these cars the other day I've found out a bit more about how they work. There's a phonic wheel on the flywheel and also a hall sensor on the dizzy. The ECU looks at both of these and if they don't match,it doesn't fire the coil. There's no messing with ignition timing on this system, at TDC the dizzy has two marks which need to be lined up. The ECU then adjusts the timing while the engine runs, necessitating a wide rotor arm tip. In fact, it's pretty much the only thing the ECU does. Fuel is mechanical k-jet. Anyway, front of the car dismantled again, the timing belt was moved one notch. Thought I'd quickly give it a start to see if that had fixed it so made sure everything was out the way and turned it over. It fired straight away and almost as soon as it had I shut it down as I heard something untoward at the front end. Walked round the front to be meeted by carnage What the actual f*** has happened here? I could only presume the power steering belt had got blown into the timing belt Really curse word off by now, I took the front pulley and lower cover off only to discover that one of the timing cover spacers had fallen into the belt. Can't believe I didn't take them off before attempting a start. It's also snapped off a bit of the engine casting, but it's only a bit thats just there to cover the cam belt at the very bottom. I'm hoping I haven't bent any valves. The engine stopped at TDC but I'm hoping it's on the exhaust stroke as the cam is 180 out. The cam belt never snapped, only flipped over so I'm hoping it more or less kept its timing. You can just about make out the white paint I put on the cam pulley is 180 out and the same with the dizzy marks For now I've ordered a new belt and plugs. We'll see if engine is ok once it's changed But at least I found out why it wasn't firing

It feels wrong to like this, but it's a sympathetic like! Really hope you've got away with no damage - hopefully you've exhausted all your bad luck by now.
Another vote for the Golf wheels suiting it, but I can see they're fairly low down the priority list at the moment!

Sometimes, others may not understand why you like a car so much. Sometimes, you may not even understand why you like a car so much. But none of that matters; all that matters is that you like the car, and having it makes you happy.

Thats a negative on the golf wheels. Some 5 spoke compomotive wheels would really suit it.
Maybe 1.8t 20v engine is in order, if your luck has run out.

hi there
I had one of these when they were ten years old. Used it for towing my caravan.
One day we were barreling down the a180 and there was a screech that sounded like the fan belt was loose, 1/2 a mile later the car stopped. I had it recovered and on checking found the cambelt tensioner had seized which caused the cam belt to snap.
Bought a new belt, timed it up and off it went. Did another 30k in it and it never missed a beat.
So hopefully you will be ok.
Cheers - mike

I didn't hear any untoward noises, just the belt shredding, hopefully it'll be good

They are interference engines, but clearly it is possible to get away with it and anyway it looks your belt stayed intact enough to maintain drive even if it did get a bit shredded......
Good luck!

Due to another MOT fail sheet as long as my arm on her modern golf, I've been somewhat delayed on getting onto the Audi. But it runs! Starts a lot quicker than it did before and I seem to have gotten away with the cambelt fiasco. So, started throwing it all together this afternoon New plugs. Again. The pipe going from the intercooler to the inlet has completely fallen apart. The inner was held in with loads of superglue by the look of it and it was at risk of injecting chunks of the stuff. So I've cut it short for now. It's not ideal and I'm looking for a replacement. The cheapest I can find at the moment is a silicone one from 034 Motorsport in America. In addition to that, all the jubilee clips are knackered and will need replacing. Must have been a hell of a lot of boost leaks Also on the replacement list is the alternator adjustment screw. I've found one for a MK1 golf which looks similar. Knackered I've also found a new grill on eBay which looks slightly nicer than mine. And it'll need new rear tyres too. Other than that it's golden

Seems eager now! Sounds nice.
That alternator adjuster is used on lots of 80s and early 90s VAG stuff, though most of the used ones you happen across look a lot like yours. Already chimped.
Audi do have strange (and highly optimistic IMO) ideas about how much boost hoses should cost. That is why the intercooler to manifold one on my A6 is made from a selection of odds and sods I found in the scrapyard. It’s lasted longer that the original now. Audi wanted £140 +vat for it about 12 years ago.

Part number for the adjuster bolt is 034903555B, might still be available from Audi or VW heritage
VW group parts prices used to be about 3 times landed price as a general rule. Cost to VW UK £10, Retail £30. I was told that by a chap I used to work with who had been a senior manager at VW for decades.
When I worked as a humble VW parts chap in the 1990s I wanted a small foam insert and was amazed to see it priced at £2k. I rang Audi parts and they said it was a bit expensive and they would review the price. Next day it was twenty quid !
