Seems eager now! Sounds nice. That alternator adjuster is used on lots of 80s and early 90s VAG stuff, though most of the used ones you happen across look a lot like yours. Already chimped. Audi do have strange (and highly optimistic IMO) ideas about how much boost hoses should cost. That is why the intercooler to manifold one on my A6 is made from a selection of odds and sods I found in the scrapyard. It’s lasted longer that the original now. Audi wanted £140 +vat for it about 12 years ago. Nick I can't find a new original hose anywhere, Audi are terrible at catering for spares for their classics. This car is currently running about 5psi more boost than standard so silicone hoses wouldn't be a bad thing. Its about £80 plus vat for the hose which is a bit steep. The problem is that the manifold end isn't round, it's more of a teardrop shape and larger that end than the intercooler outlet, so not easy to find something to fit

Part number for the adjuster bolt is 034903555B, might still be available from Audi or VW heritage VW group parts prices used to be about 3 times landed price as a general rule. Cost to VW UK £10, Retail £30. I was told that by a chap I used to work with who had been a senior manager at VW for decades. When I worked as a humble VW parts chap in the 1990s I wanted a small foam insert and was amazed to see it priced at £2k. I rang Audi parts and they said it was a bit expensive and they would review the price. Next day it was twenty quid ! Cheers, the bolt I believe was robbed from the aircon compressor adjuster as that's missing it's screw. So it's chewed through two in its 30 years. Not a great design. I think you can get adjustable tie rods for MK1 golfs which are better catered for in the aftermarket spares department. They look cheap enough to test a set out. I've only been to VW for parts for our modern golf a couple of times and found their prices to be from some fairytale land. They wanted £9000 to replace the cracked oil control rings on the golf. Now at 190,000 it's still going, albeit puffing blue smoke, drinking a litre every 400 miles and chewing through a set of plugs every 6 months. I may pull the engine and change them this summer, they're only around £150 for a set of rings. I can't really be bothered though, I'd rather scrap it

Wow! That took me back, 23 yrs ago, I had a dark blue, poverty spec 100 avant, cloth seats and windy windows. Lovely thing to drive it would do Portsmouth to Lincoln most weekends, it had to have the heater motor rewound and an issue with the central locking I only sold it as it had an issue with the oil pick up pipe and I didn't have the skills or the tools to fix it.
I'd keep the golf wheels on it, they really suit it, also I like the head light eyeliner. Great work. Dan

Dan It's honestly the most comfortable thing I've driven, which is impressive given that it's been lowered. My heater isn't the most convincing. It doesn't seem to get very warm and I can't get the Face vents to work. I do have a spare though. The central locking is vacuum operated so I can imagine it developing a few issues. But yeah it seems the ideal bus for me at the moment. Plenty of room for the dog, reasonably good on fuel etc. I'm doing a 40 min commute in it each way. Other than issues caused by me it seems to be doing ok so far

I remember test driving a new one back in the day - like the CX it was super comfortable, and like the CX the ventilation and heating sucked. Don’t know if it was anything to do with how slippery they both were for the time they were built.

Part number for the adjuster bolt is 034903555B, might still be available from Audi or VW heritage Quick google suggests widely available on ebay with prices varying from £ 3.94 to £ 105.84. The cheap one is probably made of cheese, but the expensive one claims to be "OEM quality"....... Obviously a bargain..... Nick PS. I've worked for German pump companies for more than 20 years and it's fair to say that there are few bargains in their parts catalogues.

Thanks for the honest depiction of your cambelt trials. I sweep stuff like that under the rubber mats and try to forget!
When I was a student in the 1880s, I mean 1980s, my friend had an Audi 100 for a while from his Dad who was a wheeler dealer. This example was ex Bishop of London and had a special lamp in the back on a bendy arm which we assumed was the Bible reading lamp and which we re purposed to illuminate the rolling of cigarettes.

Had my brother come up for a few days in his MK3 Granada. That thing is mint! The alternator adjustment bolt still hadn't turned up so cleaned up the old one for a temp fit. It turns out that the golf wheels rub on the the track rod ends so had to swap the other wheels back on Should get some better photos tomorrow. The Speedo still doesn't work which is annoying and I swear I can hear a boost leak. Other than that, all is well! It feels like a long time since I've had a roadworthy fun car

New tyres and a fresh tank of fuel today. I'm getting just about 500 miles from a 75 litre tank on this which works out at 30mpg if I'm careful. Happy with that. Took a couple more photos in the fog this morning before the granny went home Both cars working well and both cars used daily all year round

I like photos like that, if it wasn't for the improved photo quality- you wouldn't know what decade it had been taken in since the cars came out! (Not taking into account the MK5 alloys, but still!)
Any plans for upping the power, or is that after you do your manual conversion? Doing some work on a friends early 90's S4 recently which is based on the later Audi 100 i believe, this'll be it's predecessor? Such well built cars!

@grumpynorthener
16mpg seem pretty phenomenal given all that weight. My 3.5 litre range rover used to get about 12mpg only carrying itself.
According to howmanyleft.com this is the only c3 100 Avant turbo auto on the road with 3 others on SORN. Obviously when you count all the other variants there's more but probably no more than 100 left.
I've got a manual gearbox for it now so hopefully with that I might get some better economy. A 3 speed auto isn't great in any capacity really. Just need all the other bits for the conversion.

Doing some work on a friends early 90's S4 recently which is based on the later Audi 100 i believe, this'll be it's predecessor? Such well built cars! It's already had a bit of an increase in power. They're 165 bhp as standard on 1.3bar of boost. This has an aftermarket ECU, exhaust manifold and wastegate spring giving 1.9bar of boost and 240bhp apparently. It certainly feels quicker than our golf GTi with 200bhp but not by much. The auto box holds it back quite a bit. I think to get any real power from it, it'll need converting over to efi, which is a big job. For now I'm quite happy with it and I've got 3 other vehicles needing my time. Having said that I'd love to stick a 20v 3b or AAN engine in it Is there a thread for the S4? Cracking cars!

I've got one of those bolts here: Bought 15 years ago for my Mk1 Golf when it had the KR in it, no need for it now it's back to a stock DX. PM your address if you want it and I'll post it on Thursday! Nice car, you're got me really wanting one...

Phwoar! I bet that's fun then. Yep, manual definitely needed! There's no thread up for it, he's not really a forum goer. It's got the 5 cylinder AAN you mention, just on with removing an old 90's immobiliser and some other wiring fixes. Also updating to tfsi coilpacks etc. Can you get a video up of how yours moves & of course the engine note? Or at least the latter Fair play though, nothing wrong with good old K-jet. Quite a nice thing to see as well, gives it that much more character. Used to have fun eeking more power out of old 8v and 16v mk2 golf engines with it using basic tools

DarrenW Cheers! I'll pm you. My new one should have been here today at the latest. I guess all the Christmas and New year's breaks are delaying things. I will need a second one for the air con compressor though. There's no belt on it at the minute as the adjuster screw is missing I know that there's a pearl white 100 Avant quattro turbo for sale on eBay. It's got the full leather and climate control too. Just needs a coolant hose allegedly....

Just bear in mind the Speedo doesn't work so you'll have no idea how quick it's going. The exhaust is ultra quiet too at the minute too so you can't hear much. In fact an exhaust is high on the agenda for 2020. The current system is a right bodge and exits too low below the bumper. I fancy seeing what it's like without the back box

pegwieAs promised, a little blat for you on a very quiet road. It's not very interesting as it's very quiet and has that awful autobox gear change. I've timed the 0-60 and it seems to be somewhere between 6 and 7 seconds. I don't think that can be improved on regardless of power as it's heavy, fwd and just spins the wheels. It's only boosting to 1.8 bar in this video. Definitely time for some new hoses.

Don't need a working speedo to see that it shifts! That's a nice amount of power for a daily too, bet it will be surprising a lot of modern tech especially after a manual swap. That's the thing I love about the 5 pots, even with a 'quiet' exhaust you can still clearly hear that 5 pot burble, sounds great.
