About 2,5 years ago I fulfilled a small dream of mine - I bought a fullsize pickup truck with a massive V8. I am in Germany, so this was something very unusual.
It was a '04 Dodge Ram 4x4 5.7 Hemi and I drove that thing over 60.000kms over the past 2,5 years. I even did a road trip through the UK, Scotland and Ireland and back to Germany.
I loved every minute of it.
But a few weeks ago I was doing my usual routine of looking at cars for sale that I'd love to own but wouldn't actually buy when I stumbled upon the prices for Porsche 944s.
I've always had a massive weak spot for these - classic 80s styling, flip up lights, decent enough power, what's not to love?
Imagine my surprise when I discovered I could get one for about the same amount of money that I would get if I sold the Ram. I couldn'T get the thought out of my head.
I sold my Ram two weeks ago. I started a thread on here asking for suggestions of 80s cars with flip up lights. I received many great and interesting suggestions! But in my heart, I always knew it had to be a Porsche.
So I spent the last two weeks looking at 944s. I found a lot of absolute disgusting curse word heaps. But in the middle there was always this one ad - for a rare 944S, but the seller was set on a price that was a bit higher than I wanted to spend ideally.
Today I went and looked at said car and... well, what can I say? The price was justified. Easily the cleanest 32 year old car I've ever seen. It basically looks brand new.
Some details:
It'S a 1987 Porsche 944 S - that means it's got a 2.5 liter 16-valve pushing 190hp.
The 944S was only available for two years - 1986 and 1987. In 1988 it was replaced by the more well-known S2 with it's 3.0 16v.
There are only about 250 Porsche 944S left in Germany.
To make mine even rarer, it's painted in Diamantblau Metallic (Diamond Blue) - a color that was only available in 1987 for 944s.
The Porsche has had two owners before me - the last owner has kept it for the last 15 years. He only sold it because he has back problems and wants to get something with a more comfortable seating position for his back.
It's done 157.000kms - that's about 97.500miles.
I was given a folder with literally every receiept and document concerning this car - dating back to the original sales bill from 1987.
The car is a blast to drive! It feels so planted and nimble, the engine really comes alive above 3500 rpm. It's perfect for some backroad fun.
I'm as happy as can be! I've always wanted a car that screams 80s - now I got one!
My only plans are to replace the crappy modern day headunit with a period correct one (I got the stock Blaupunkt Bremen with the car, but the owner wasn't sure if it works as it's sat on a shelf for the past ~12 years or so) and possible replacing the 15 inch teledials with 16 inch ones.
Apart from that, I just want to drive and enjoy it. It's a little time capsule that instantly takes you back in time 30 years.
On to some pics - still on the previous owners tags, I'll get it registered in my name tomorrow.
If you need me, I'll be sitting in the car, playing with the flip up headlights.
MAKE FLIP UP LIGHTS GREAT AGAIN.
