I called Snap-on again today, and got in touch with a very helpful chap who was happy to give me the service menu code and talk me through disabling the MOT mode.
The bad news is that it didn't help. In fact my analyser is already running in "standard" mode, and apparently the reason that it does not display readings is because it is overdue for a gas calibration test. The man at Snap-on told me this will be difficult to arrange as it involves someone visiting with three different gases to calibrate the unit.
Good to know, at least, and I think I will get rid of it now as this is a pretty conclusive "game over".

Yes, that's quite similar to the hatch, with the added fun that there's a box section between the arches that has to be removed for access on the estate shell. As scabby as it looks, I'd say the section down the right would probably clean up, though maybe with a few little holes that could be patched. The ribs on the section between the arches are a fiddle, the bends in the panel mean that they probably need to be cut, notched and welded to make the turns, in the absence on the proper presses. I just looked at my old photos, it looks as if I made the ribs separately on that part and welded them in place.

I was under the impression that the missing Photobucket photos had all been restored - they've had a change of heart. Obviously any that people removed and closed accounts and so on will still be gone, but those left in place should be visible again now.
I got an email the other day: "For a limited time all of your 3rd Party Hosted Images have been restored. Please login to choose the plan that best fits your needs to continue hosting your images."
But only for a limited time.

How bad is the door you have?
Could probably make repair sections for the boot floor, I've done most of the hatch rear end but in smaller pieces.

I would gather the small parts together first, then start worrying about the boxes. I've bought similar things, boxes with small compartments, and they're sometimes fine for nuts and bolts (as long as you don't have many) but I soon find that so many bits won't go in them. Start collecting things like margarine and ice cream tubs, they can be at least as useful.
Lots of high street places sell boxes like that for a fraction of the price, though maybe not such a range. Every time I go in TK Maxx there's a couple in there, and places likes Wickes and B&Q, or maybe the Poundstretcher-style shops. It might be an issue if you want loads of them all the same, but unless your vehicles are different to mine, loads all the same won't be much use. I searched the net for larger plastic boxes with lids, but found that even if I bought 20 or more, once I'd taken into account P&P it was cheaper to buy them on the retail park.
I love the idea of having it all neatly racked out. My ideal garage would be like the one at the beginning of "Tomb Raider", all neat units, everything put away, obviously without the machine gun-wielding maniacs. Trouble is, that's clearly a garage where no actual work gets done.

I've been trying to get a photo of this for a while.

A mate of mine recently fitted the complete kit to a GT, and from what he said, "hit and miss" is putting it mildly.
That's not necessarily a reflection on the kit, though - another mate fitted a genuine DTV / Blydenstein "Old Nail" kit to his Firenza and reported similar difficulties in getting it all to fit.

Certainly for mainly parked subjects it's not going to make a lot of difference, especially in normal daylight conditions. Manual allows you to take control when you need to.

Does the "first seven days" count as actual days, or just working days? A calendar suggests that the 9th was actually only the fourth working day of 1978 because of weekends and so on.
I thought they'd actually decreased the number of information sources they'd accept for proof of manufacture date now, but I am out of touch with it.

No, I'm not sure that the actual reading on the scope is related to the printed scale. I was just wondering about the way it varies up and down, rather than the specific reading.

OK, so you're saying that doesn't look "wrong" to you? If that's the case, then all good. I'm not used to what these things should look like, so I only have the Crypton book to go from, and that just shows the same shape but all in a straight line on the vertical scale.

Is anyone familiar with alternator outputs as shown on a Crpyton 'scope? My car seemed to not be charging very well according to the voltmeter today, but when I put it on the machine it was generally showing 14.4v on the meter and the gauge seemed a bit better. The trace on the scope looked like this, the shape of each "blip" seemed to be about what the manual shows for "good", but I wondered if anyone had any ideas on why it isn't in a straight line as the manual shows? (Given that I had to turn the flash off, there's a chance this is more than one "refresh", but it's the varying position vertically that I'm wondering about).

Weren't they made by Bluemels back in the day? That name springs to mind for something like that. Often see boxes of the letters and numbers at autojumbles.

Practice, and having a look around photography-related forums. I use a Pentax forum, and Talk Photography. I don't think I could learn it from a book, though from time to time I take advantage of cheap deals on various magazines - those "five issues for £5" that pop up now and then.
I find that some of the advice I've had on photo forums is very helpful though, as long as I post a photo asking for advice on how to improve it, or what went wrong, or along those lines. Remember that posting a photo on somewhere like here is very different - here the viewers are usually looking at the vehicle, on a photo forum they're looking more at the quality of the image.
It's a never-ending process, though - there's still plenty of stuff I have to improve on. Just when you think you've got it covered...

Can't help with that car specifically, but I've got a TT with the same 1.8T engine. Look for records of regular oil changes as the pick-up pipe can get blocked if it's not done properly. Also look for evidence of a cam belt change fairly recently at that mileage / age. The Audi handbook gives some ridiculous change interval for the belt, which it's wise to ignore. There's a TT buyers guide on the UK TT forum that might give some more information on the engine side of things.
