Hello everybody, I recently bought an old garage from a friend of my father. After cleaning it, I would like to repair and improve my Mercedes-Benz 200 D. In addition, I also convert my Ford Transit into a kind of "caravan". Since all kinds of small parts are lying around in the garage, which I would like to structure after sorting out, I am looking for a shelf with matching boxes. I imagine boxes containing small compartments. It would also be cool if they are adjustable in size. However, these boxes are relatively expensive and unfortunately, I could not find anything suitable in many different hardware stores. ... Does anyone know cheap alternatives? I would gather the small parts together first, then start worrying about the boxes. I've bought similar things, boxes with small compartments, and they're sometimes fine for nuts and bolts (as long as you don't have many) but I soon find that so many bits won't go in them. Start collecting things like margarine and ice cream tubs, they can be at least as useful.
Lots of high street places sell boxes like that for a fraction of the price, though maybe not such a range. Every time I go in TK Maxx there's a couple in there, and places likes Wickes and B&Q, or maybe the Poundstretcher-style shops. It might be an issue if you want loads of them all the same, but unless your vehicles are different to mine, loads all the same won't be much use. I searched the net for larger plastic boxes with lids, but found that even if I bought 20 or more, once I'd taken into account P&P it was cheaper to buy them on the retail park.
I love the idea of having it all neatly racked out. My ideal garage would be like the one at the beginning of "Tomb Raider", all neat units, everything put away, obviously without the machine gun-wielding maniacs. Trouble is, that's clearly a garage where no actual work gets done.

I have found that glass jars, with screw-on metal lids, fixed underneath wooden shelves, work very well. You can see all the contents, and easily access your choice. The parts are safe, and out of the way. Different size jars are easily available

I bought some of these recently. www.screwfix.com/p/18-compartment-organiser-large/3065p#_=pNot especially strong but I needed quite a few and didnt want to spend a lot. Ideal for things you arent using every day so can take a bit of care with. As I said, not the best quality but the price is so low that they are very good value for money. Things like that are not much use for car parts though, only very useful for fasteners, clips etc. For super low budget butter/marg/spread tubs are great if you use the same brand all of the time. Its worth getting some cheap sticky labels to put on and write on with a marker pen because writing straight onto the tub isnt easy to read and find the thing you are looking for. |

Would look at Lin Bins, expensive to buy new but plenty on ebay used. Put the larger items in there, and the oddments in resealable bag sin the boxes. Or use the cheap 30 odd litre crates from Asda, 2 for £5 last I looked.
