...cars are awesome - we all know and subscribe to that train of thought. They're even more awesome when talented folk like those found on THIS WEBSITE decide to sketch, draw, render or copy them via MAC, chalk, paint or pencil. Enjoy. Chris

It's like an RS200...
...drinking white wine.
That's no bad thing though, there are lot of white wine drinkers I'd like to enjoy the company of.

What I'm asking is would it feel right to drive a car that someone else built, knowing that you had skipped over your own expertise to simply reach the finish line? Yeah but what if you don't have the expertise to 'reach the finishing line ' ? Whether you've built the thing yourself or bought it as is , you'd still get a sense of pride owning/driving it - no ? Sorry, expertise or means. Chris

Small world - I'm driving that around France in the Guild classic rally in May. Thanks for the picture - it's the first I've ever seen of it She's a beauty, you'll love it. Chris

Yes.. yes I could. If I had enough disposable income I'd drive my car to Huxley autoservices and throw a small pile of cash at him to build the car I want built. I know I don't have the skills to do it, so I'll spend my time working all hours in order to earn enough money to pay someone else to do the job properly. I'd not want to buy someone elses finished project, unless it was exactly the sort of thing I wanted... for example I'd buy John's Minor if I could afford it as it is perfect to me. A lot of us, myself included, would pay people to build what we want. There's nothing wrong with that, after all that's why such businesses exist. And yes, there is nothing wrong with buying a car that's been built by someone else which happens to meet your criteria. What I'm asking is would it feel right to drive a car that someone else built, knowing that you had skipped over your own expertise to simply reach the finish line? I know I could, given time, restore a Capri to the standard of the one outside my house. I'd never buy one and in that state and enjoy it though, not knowing that it's something I could do. Chris

Interesting thread idea... I'd quite happily buy a minter off someone else, but I couldn't take the praise for it. Just wouldn't sit right in my head. It's definitely more satisfying to drive something you've built though, tenfold, makes the skinned knuckles worth it. That's the thing. The Zodiac is a shed, but it's my shed and I can account for at least the last decade of its life (remember kids, my brother in law owned it before me). Driving that Capri - much like any of the Heritage cars I've driven - is an odd experience. Chris

So I currently have this beauty sat outside my house, care of Ford Heritage. One of my neighbours clocked it and came over to ask if it was mine. My instant response was "No". I didn't say that because I thought "no, it belongs to Ford" I said that because I'd never own a car like that. I also felt a bit uneasy when people looked, smiled and pointed as I drove it home through Kent. I'll own a minter one day, but it'll be something I put together. I can't think of anything worse than buying a mint car and then parading around in it. I want my car to be a representation of my abilities - I want my car to be something I built, restored or (in the case of the Zodiac) just kept on the road. Could you buy a car that someone else had restored and drive around in it, absorbing all the admiration, or would you only roll in a minter if it was something you had built? Discuss... Chris

Budget? I'm doing my best to avoid selling this... ...because I don't have a budget. I'd be happy with 10 minutes to drive it, or clean it, or just sit in it. If you've got a minimal budget I envy you. I have no budget at all, or time, and what makes it worse is the fact that it just looks worse each time I see it. Makes me sad. Chris Oh, and for what it's worth can we make that Imp picture smaller? It's sucking up all my bandwidth!

Popped into Ford Heritage today to pick up a Capri. While I was there I got a quick snap of this RS200, also known as "the one the apprentices built". Brand new everything, but never used. It just sits in the corner collecting dust, poor thing. Chris

I've driven that /\ in clumsy 'I do not fit in this car' kind of way.
The Irish fella (who's name fails me) who has that also owns a lot of other group B stuff. The Pug in front is his too, if it's not I know he has one.

Oh, come on...this was always going to happen. Yes, the RS200, possibly the loonies thing to roll out of Ford for some time. Fitted with a 1803cc turbocharged BD engine (BDT), four wheel drive and more trick suspension than you could shake a stick at, it was an animal. It held its own in Group B for years and even when those car were outlawed the RS200 still lived on thanks to the insane world of rallycross - encouraging 600bhp as a minimum. People do tend to forget that they were available in road trim too. Furnished by Ghia, the road going RS200 was an odd beast with snort, power and stamina...and a leather-trimmed steering wheel. They were still immense though, but not as immense as they were on the rally stages, so let's focus on that... The were bloody goot a crashing, too! Not bad for a car built by Reliant of Tamworth. No, really. Click THIS for some great factory shots! Chris

So, I had a day of cleaning with my wonderful assistant yesterday... ...all while the Zodiac looked on, unimpressed... The weather really was on my side yesterday so I thought I'd set to cleaning the old girl and making her look respectable. Up until now she hadn't been subjected to any kind of freshen-up, mainly down to time, inclination and curse word-poor weather. Anyway, yesterday was different thanks to an odd, vaguely familiar ball of fire in the sky. You just gotta love the comedy extended angle you can achieve on these Mercedes bonnets! First was the engine bay - just to clear out all the leaves and twigs from where it had been sat for so long. Oh, and I had to change the battery too (the one that was on it wasn't mine, so I robbed the Z's battery). That's all though, engines are functional and as such, I've never seen the point in cleaning them. Next up, the interior. This was full of 20+ years of other people's bottom fluff. Not what I wanted. Then the windows... ..and then it was time for some Meguiars Tech-Wax. Oh, and some Wonder Wheels too (which must have changed formula over the years as I don't remember it being that good). The result of a few hours graft was this... I moved the old car-phone so it was closer to where Lucie sits. She had much fun prentending to ring Mummy, Nana, Kathy and Bruce! Obligatory WW air-freshener... Oooh, data... Representin'... Original dealer goodness... So, that's how she stands. I guess I better crack on with lowering it now...

I'd happily swap you my 190e for it ?? *pointless question, but no harm in trying ! Sorry dude, this one is a keeper as will be demonstrated on Monday, it really is much better than I ever dreamed it could be. I do, however, know of a brace of SECs - some of which might be available. Chris
