This is an obvious photoshop, there are plenty of things that aren't right on it, I've outlined some of them here, although I'm not entirely sure about some of them, so I've marked them with a question mark. First, the obvious ones, the door handle and shutline that obviously used to be there. Other things to note are that the sloping edge of the rear side window, and the trim around the back window don't look right, one is oddly jagged, and one has obviously been too jagged at some point, resulting in a deliberate blur over that area. I have some suspicions about the area under that too. It should also be noted that the silver one's back window does not look the same as the black 2 door's back window. Onto my suspected telltale signs, the tree seems to have been modified by the back end of hte car being modified, resulting in that odd straight edge. In the interior, a black line that I'm taking is plastic trim seems to disappear in an unusual and abrupt way, in a funny and illogical location, as though it's a piece of interior trim that the photoshopper has forgotten to modify, so it has been cut off by the shortening of the car and doesn't look right. There are also bits under the car that don't look right to me, although those ones are quite possibly me looking for problems that aren't there. In short, it's an obvious and not all that good photoshop, although the black 2 door is a real picture, whether it's a factory 2 door or a conversion, either way it does exist.

I've tried to make this one look more convincing, purely out of curiosity, and to show where this guy went wrong, although a lot of the tell tell signs I mentioned are still there, becaue this is literally a five minute job and I couldn't be bothered doing any more to it! ;D It's still a dire job, and it wouldn't convince many people, but it's very slightly more like the black one there. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm not saying you're making anything up, I'm saying that whoever made up that photoshop was. It wouldn't surprise me if Ford made a few of them for evaluative purposes or something, then decided it didn't make any sense or would cost to much to put them into full series production,so I don't think it's entirely impossible that a few Ford-owned conversions made their way into other people's hands later and that's what's started the legend.

Sorry to keep taking this off topic but were there really only 76 1.3 three doors made. As I have seem to have seen loads of them over the years and for the last 15 years there seem to be dozens of them for sale as "cosworth bases". I know Ford had made a lot of three door shells for motorsport and someone (it might have been Collins motorsport the blue tiger stripe people) bought them and were selling them off for about £2,000 each. Also I am pretty certain that there were never any two door sapphires (86 on) made by Ford in the UK could be a possibility for Ford South Africa as they would do pretty much anything the felt like. ;D Right apologies for that now back on topic. My fave engine of all time Toyota 4AGE ;D unbelievable bought my AE86 with 70,000 mile on it did 50,000 mile in 5 year and had it revving above 7,000 on a [glow=red,2,300]daily[/glow] basis and then when the chassis died the engine went into my mates avenger rally car in 2000 were it still resides to this day without a rebuild. ;D Other faves include Ford Pinto torquey relatively powerful piece of curse word to tune at home and reliable as long as the camshaft is getting oil. Ford X-flow light, revvy, easy to work on and provided a basis for lotus twin cam and BD series engines and gave a unit for toyota to copy for the 4age .Until a couple of years ago it was still powering ford ka`s and focus`s as the endura although the festa got the yamaha zetec for some obscure reason. Vauxhall XE cosworth deliver the goods again excellent standard engine.

With regards to the 2 door Sapphires, there is a guy who used to convert them. I cant remember his name but he has posted on the Turbosport forum a few times. I am not sure if the silver one is genuine, but I've seen the dark blue pic before and was built buy this guy.
Cant give you any more detail than this, but i've seen them discussed on various forums and it's always come down to 'this guy' who converted them.
Back to thread: The 4AGE is a copy of the BDA, not the Lotus twink.
Pinto, XE, Crossflow, A-series, and BDA are my favourites.

BDA is a totally different engine to the Lotus Twink. BDA is basically a Cosworth DFV chopped in half.

The very first BDA`s used a crossflow bottom end but werent that reliable thats why ford used a standard crossflow for the london to mexico then I think the later ones had their own castings. The FVA (four valve A series) was half of a DFV and was used in formula 2 before the BDA was brought out

The twink was an 8 valve, the BDA is a 16 valve. The twink was just a boggo lotus twin cam

Nope, lotus lump is an 8 valve. The escort twink was basically a re-shelled lotus cortina
