I've been thinking about this one a bit recently......
Classic engines, by that i mean engines that years after production finished they are still sought after, or they have spawned derivatives.
The one for me that springs to mind is the Vauxhall XE...... One of the most powerful production NA engines of it's time, hugely sucsessful in BTCC, still sought after today by modders. Best known derivative is the LET engine, but i know a lot of people are using the ecotec engine especially the 1.6 version.....
Any other engines you can think of that could be classic retro

lotus twin cam, was in anything lotus of that era, the rs1600, lotus cortina, etc etc, was based on a crossflow (another classic engine) and spawned the bdg cosworth lump found the the rs1800.
also, the pinto. first used in cortina's and escorts, the pinto went from the puny 1300 lump found in rare as fook sierra sapph 2 doors, commonly used as the 2l lump found in, well, erm, anything ford! made a good base for the cossie, and in cossie guise go right up to (what ive seen, maybe more) 800bhp!

You have to mention the BMC A-series...Minors, Midgets, Minis, Metros and Marinas all had 'em in! Another honourable mention should go to the Toyota twin cam: ..as found in many a modded J-ride and a few racers in it's day. I've also currently got a thing for the Toyota M-series engine...from a basic single cam 6-pot to the later twin-turbo twin-cam evolvements.

I'm not just saying this because I'm an Imp owner, the Imp engine has definate pedigree. Besides the Imp, it was used in countless specials, kit cars etc, and has also been used by people building and customising motorbikes, boats etc, plus the engine has countless race and rally wins under its belt. It was a pretty clever bit of engineering too, lightweight, tuneable, and not nearly as unreliable as pub bores would have you believe.

Well, most of my favourite engines have been mentioned - Toyota 4AGE (wasn't that pretty much a carbon copy of a Cosworth lump?), Fiat Twink, A & K Series Rover engines... Popular on the continent, but not so much here I've found, is the Supra Turbo six pot engine (don't know the techie name). Also, the Nissan SR20DET. Have to mention the Mercedes M117 V8 - the later 5.0 quad-cam with alloy block. I want one of those next! Not really transplanted much but a fantastic engine! I have a soft spot for the Ford Cologne V6 - OK they aren't very tuneable but in Cosworth form it needn't be tweaked much more!
