Some stipulations.
It must have a test, it must be relatively practical for four people (ie no 924s, no 205s).
Comfortable and no more than about a 2.5, what do YOU buy?

B3 Passat, preferably an Estate. Or a Sierra, also preferably an estate.

I bought an E34 520i on that budget for a daily, its needed some rust repairs but its a lovely drive Edit: The only other car I bought as a retro (ish) daily in that budget (that was less than 2.5l) was a Saab 9-3 Aero HOT, it was a very fast car, practical, comfortable, economical. But also gave me a load of headaches so I couldn't/wouldn't recommend one

Yep a 5 series any day. But get the 528i. I love my e39. We have done 200.000km without any problem. Our next car? a BMW just like the 6 we had before this one. I really find them cheap to run, cheap to maintain and very reliable. We are here in Australia, nice and dry. My wife's 1999 model has absolutely no rust and is near perfect.

I was faced with this exact dilemma and got this: Was under budget so had some cash spare for coilovers and wheels. It's been very reliable except for some sump/ground interface related shennanigans. They sit very low and are ally so crack easily. Other than that I love it. Although I could be tempted to part with it since it's not been driven for nearly a year!

Depends on your definition of practical, my Mum raised 3 kids with a 205.

Debatable retroness but a E39 528i - don't think the mpg differs that much between the 520 - 528 lol. Keep looking on gumtree at a 1 owner 523i that is for sale local for £995, old man spec but I really like it but I need an estate atm Or even a e36 318is Coupe, cheap, nippy and great on fuel (I had 400 miles out of a tank more than once) some early ones even have LSD's

At the minute I'd buy that tidy mk1 fiesta in the for sale section. Or try and scrape up an extra £100 for that cool burgundy mk2 fiesta also in the for sale section.
I don't even like fiestas.

i'd buy a Mondeo and then use the change for some alloys, and a large weekend in the pub... or buy a mk2 golf

This only cost me a grand, 205 horse Aero HOT auto with all the bells and whistles, still has 4 useable seats. In 18 months only 2 tyres and a failed fuel pump (got a second hand one locally) have disturbed my wallet. Steve

This is exactly where I find myself; I have £1,500 put aside to spend on something economical to spare my C124 from a 43 mile daily round trip to work when we move house in a couple of months. I need 45+mpg and reliability, but ideally something at least a little bit retro. A really nice Xantia diesel or something along those lines would fit the bill, but my sensible head is thinking a nice tidy diesel Bora or early A4..
