Would highly recommend a e36, such a lovely car. I Never had experienced a BMW before and never really had much time for them. But I saw one at a garage and had a look round it and fell in love with it straight away. The quality inside is a totally different ball game to anything I've seen, you start to realise why BMW have their reputation when you have one.
Can get a good one for £1500, they are very reliable, MPG isn't amazing but what retro car is really. Quite spacious inside, the driving experience is great as well.

+1 for Volvo 940 2.3 Turbo! Bought an estate last year as a load lugger as we were moving house - had all sorts in the back large furniture, a three seater sofa etc etc. Super comfy pootling round everywhere and enough power in the LPT version to keep me amused.

There's a 320i auto tourer E36 for sale on the East Coast Retro page, nice and original, good spec - £650. That's £650 for a German built straight six powered load lugger. That leaves £850 for a holiday, hell of a weekend in Amsterdam, 2nd hand rims and lowering springs etc etc.
Otherwise I'd go Mercedes, had a couple of W124's as dailys, build quality you just don't get anymore. MPG might be a bit shaky but you have a 3 pointed star on the bonnet so that makes it all alright.

I went all sensible and bought myself a diesel estate for rather less than your budget... Averaged 43MPG over the last 3000 miles or so - can't complain. And it's RWD and so sensible that if you own one long enough, a wife, 2 kids and a white picket fence will appear.

My DD for the past couple of years has been a '95 BMW 320i (150bhp) Touring (5 speed). Bought with about 9 months MoT, in very good nick both inside and out with a tad over 100k on the clock. It averages 33 - 38mpg depending how I drive it. I have spent about £200 on it in two years (front suspension arms and tre's). I bought it for £450, so could have bought two more for your budget.

Not really retro or economic but I'd go out and get a Volvo c70 coupe in the saffron orange wthe 2.5 5 cylinder, I had an S70 and kinda should have kept it really, made an awesome sound, cost me £700 with a years ticket, passed no problem on the following one too.

Well ... Toyota Carina! My Dad had one, you see. Would get it for the nostalgia. Other than that, nothing in that price range tickles my fancy!

i've bought 2 daily drivers in the past year for under £1500. I owned a Lotus Elan M100 for a while, and needed something cheap to run about in when using the Lotus wasn't practical. I spotted this wee Talbot for sale on here and knew i had to have it. the previous owner had used it as a winter car, to keep his other classics off the road. it was a bit tatty and rusty in places but some sanding and spray paint sorted that out. Still not perfect though. It never missed a beat on the 4 hour trek home, and has been relatively hassle free over the past year. i bought it for the £695 asking price, and have replaced the driveshafts, clutch slave cylinder, and a few other small jobs. lucky if it has cost me more than £1000 including taxing and insuring it. After a few months i decided the Talbot is a car i want to keep, for as long as possible. I've covered almost 10k miles in it in 10 months, which is a lot for a classic car. It was used through the snow and hail of the scottish winter, and never let me down. I decided last month to retire it from being a daily driver and use it for sunny days etc. And bought this A Renault 19 Biarritz 1.9L Diesel. its definitely not a looker, but its a bit different, and surprisingly good to drive. It's comfortable and handles well enough. It runs like an old truck when idling, but its brilliant for cruising the motorways, and is large enough to be a practical daily car. I bought it for £300, and has a few months MOT on it. averages about 45MPG.

I would buy a Volvo 850 T5 auto estate like my old one. Dark blue, lowered slightly, 18" Lenso's, updated rear lights, uprated brakes etc. One sold near me last week for 500 was soooooo tempted to bid on it......

Mercedes 320 CE would do me nicely Good luck finding one worth having at that price! You'd more than likely be spending LOTS more keeping it going. I drive one as a daily at the moment.

Here in New Zealand, with a budget of 1500 Pounds Sterling and the favourable exchange rate, a BMC car of some sort would be top of the list. Most likely an ADO16 or an Allegro. There are still good near enough to rust free ADO16s to be had for that sort of money.

All depends on how many miles you are going to do. I would love an old Merc either 124 or 190 series. Failing that a Volvo or anything big and comfortable. But if like me you need something practical, cheap to run and can soak up the miles then it has to be a B3 TD Passat if you can find one. I do between 500 and 600 miles a week in mine with just the usual routine maintenance, reminds me I'm due another oil change

Id be looking at ford orion, vauxhall carlton , pug 605 or wildcar austin maxi About 12 years ago I was running bangers, basically just buying cars with long MOT's & getting rid when the MOT expired. I bought a Ford Orion, (a car I've always disliked quite intensely). It had £20 of fuel in it the day I bought it, it had £70 of road tax left & the lad selling it wanted £100 for it. So I reckon I paid £10 for that Orion. OK, I know I got done! (I sold it after 6 mths for £60 to someone who just wanted to take the gearbox out of it).
