It's great to see the progress on this Thomas. The sill repair is superb and although you're having problem after problem, just think how nice it's going to be when it's all done and back together. I love the way you future proof your car, "In the same time I got the starter and alternator refurbished so they are all as new now." - most people would just do the heads then find the starter or something else breaks as soon as the car is back together. Great stuff and I can't wait to see more progress.... Oh, and sorry to hear about the bolt - that looks well and truly stripped! Instead of using a helicoil, have you ever heard of Time-serts? Not as cheap but they are so much better than helicoils: www.timesert.com/ If you can find someone with the tools, I'd recommend doing this instead.

Today i spent a day in the barn, working on the SD1. Removed the head where i stripped the thread, but the time-sert kit hasn't arrived yet, so nothing done on that front. Ordered a new set of bolts and washers this time round, to exclude all suspicious things. And a new set of headgaskets, tin ones this time in stead of the composite ones i ordered last time. Also threw some Motip 'Monza' red on the valve covers. Match is non existing, but it looks better then the oily covers it had when i bought the car. Also swapped the steering rack, and got everything running pretty straight at the moment, even the steeringwheel sits as it should, so that's nice to see that my theory worked. After the APK, it's going in for a proper tracking job, because this engine saga is making my creditcard cry, so i don't want to ruin a set of tires as well ;D

Wow - this is really turning into a mission - shame about the block thread but I'd echo Bruces comments on helicoil v timeserts

well, the time-serts came in a couple of days ago, so I went in to the barn again This is what you get for 100 dollar After I used all the tools in the little box, I had a block with the correct thread in again! So an hour later, I had the head back on, and if I hadn't snapped a rockershaft bolt, it would've been running this weekend (note to self: do NOT use this torque wrench on ANY engine again, it's the second time it caused me trouble New bolts on order, and I hope it'll be running next week! And thanks again, Bruce, for the tip of time-serts, they are great!

Great car. I had a 1985 Single Plenum Vitesse in Targa Red very similar to yours. Glad you kept that engine, as the Vitesse has higher compression, and i think they also have bigger valves than the carb engines. Mine also ate v-belts off the alternator.

I have'nt been on here for a while, so only just catching up with this thread. Very interesting, keep up the good work. I bought myself an 1985 Vitesse 3 years ago and i will be keeping this one. I have had 3 SD1s before and really regret selling my last one, a VDP EFI, about 18 years, i wish i could have stored it. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. My Vitesse.

Glad you kept that engine, as the Vitesse has higher compression, and I think they also have bigger valves than the carb engines. Mine also ate v-belts off the alternator. i think that is due to the stupid design, i can't tension the belt on my own! The way i've done it the last couple of times is that one person with a big breaker bar lifts the car of the ground hanging from the alternator and the other one tightens the bolt, and then it's still a little slack! i've done loads of v-belt changes on all of my other cars, never had the problem of belt slipping, let alone flying off! This is where i'm at right now: So close!

If Viscous were that bad, modern cars would still not be using them. Admittedly, trying to find a reputable coupling that will last is tricky.
Good to see you persevering with this. Not long until you are done eh?

Very close - I can't wait, and I bet you can't either. ;D
I do like the noise that a viscous fan makes - it's just part of the SD1's character IMO.

indeed! I want to hear it roar into life again! Maybe i'll go in the barn this evening, to avoid that thing with 22 people running after a ball (apparantly something big is going on? ), and finish it

So I went into the barn tonight, fitted the last of the engine parts back in their place, filled all the fluids (there's a lot of coolant in the system! and started her up! Video is of the first start, and when I first turned the starter, I saw that the fan didn't turn, it was hitting the shroud, that's why I stopped and had a look The ticking noise you hear is the timing pointer hitting the pulley, apparantly I bent it when taking it all apart . After a while, the idle wasn't constant, it began to hunt a little bit. Could be some air in the system (as i've read that the system is very hard to bleed) or the idle is a little low, as the tacho says it's under 500 rpm. And you can also hear that I didn't manage to tighten the v-belt, what a surprise! ;D But that's for another time! Everytime I 'first-start' a car after a rebuild, this is what I think of. Maybe it's wrong, but I did it in almost the same way tonight

Awesome. Brings back some memories. ;D I can't really remember, but have a feeling that the idle on my Dad's was never rock-solid when cold. Everytime I 'first-start' a car after a rebuild, this is what I think of. Maybe it's wrong, but I did it in almost the same way tonight Not wrong at all - it's a fantastic feeling.

yeah, that's it, start from stone cold is perfect, after a minute it starts to hunt a little bit, but when fully warmed up after a drive, it idles perfect. at least, that's what it did before i took it apart, and since the symptoms now are exactly the same i have a feeling it isn't cured yet
