I've got a problem, it involves Ford Sierras and a short attention span. The cycle is always the same I buy a Sierra then for some reason I get bored with it and sell it (or crash it) then buy something else to fill the car shaped void in my life. Then there is the honey moon period were the "other car" is great and fun, but then after a while comes the realisation that these "other car" no matter how good isn't quite a Sierra. I know this sounds weird but I just love them, they are mechanically simple, parts are cheap, they are easy to modify and personally I love the way they drive. So with that in mind, I recently got offered a Sierra from a mate of a mate of a mate............. and the rest is history! It's a little crusty in the usual places, rear sills and battery tray mainly, but it well solid and seems like a good car. It pulls well, doesn't burn any oil (despite 120,000 miles on the clock). I've already swapped the clear indicators and side repeaters for orange ones, because I prefer them........ ......and I sold the 17" Khan reps which have been replaced for the meantime with 15" TSW Imolas I had laying around. So what are the plans ;D Replace the leaky heater matrix (with a new one I've got) Remove tow bar Weld the diff Lower it (first on cut spring, but I've got plans for a cheap uber stiff setup using transit front springs ) Change the front suspension for re-drilled 4WD hubs to increase caster angle and lock Fit some cool wheels (maybe Wellers or Saab three spoke I've not decided yet) Fabricate some kind of silly shotgun style exhaust pipe Comment and abuse welcome

do transit springs fit? ? I think so only way to find out for certain is to actually try and fit them. However I've done some research at work (handy working at a motorfactors sometime). Basically after seeing the rear springs Ryan fitted to his Sierra it got me thinking about what spring I could use to get mine low and hard! So I ordered up a load of van and large car springs and compared them to a heavy duty Sierra spring. I found that Ford Transit 90-00 shape front spring seem to have an almost identical internal and external diameter and are perfectly parallel too. The photo shows the heavy duty Sierra spring on the left, a Transit spring in the middle and a heavy duty Transit spring on the right. As you can see the thickness of the spring is much greater than the Sierra spring and as such is much harder to compress. The plan is it get a pair of second hand springs, offer them up and then cut them to a suitable length. Hopefully paired to some second hand Konis. Then skid skid win win, well thats the plan!

I've had a couple of GLSis and feel exactly the same way. I crashed my first one and my daughter has never forgiven me. The second had wiring loom issues and drove me daft with flat batts at inopportune moments. There's an Alfa on the drive now that cost about 10 times what my last Sierra did but a large part of me would be just has happy in that old Sierra.
I don't think my back would be up to running those springs though.

niiice. sierras are awesome. says the guy selling his only one he has left.. doh! Oh well i'll get another one, just need something cheap and diesel for the moment.
As for the springs, maybe try the non HD transit ones first, in case the HD ones actually cause you to damage yourself. potential to be a seriously boneshaking ride

Ryan that may lead to some badly bent panels lol! But I'm game. The idea of a pair of twining white and black Sierras makes me happy ;D The Transit springs are only for the rear I just find that every Sierra I've even been in is too softly sprung at the back (even with coilovers) they always do the classic squatting under acceleration thing. I want to use the Sierra to drift and the idea suspension setup involves much stiff rear suspension at the rear than I can find cheaply and off the shelf. At the front I want to again get some Koni or Spax dampers and pair them to some Sierra cosworth lowering springs. For drifting Sierras lack caster and lock, so I want to use 4WD front hubs as they give more caster angle than the 2WD hubs. I had them left over from when I broke the XR4x4 I had. I've already removed the CV joint innards......... .......and to increase lock I want to get the hubs redrilled to change the location of the track rod end. Like this....... .......although I want a tapered hole so I can use the OE track rod ends, instead of the bolt and rose jointed affair I'm the photo. Using 4WD hubs means I must use the pinch bolt type track control arms (which I've also got) and the larger diameter 4WD dampers too (which I don't have).Â

FU*K! Someone should have shown me that picture a week ago when I had the taunus front end apart! I've also felt my sierras have been too soft in the back, but yellow konis stiffens up the rear alot more than most stiff springs i've tried. Combine them with those, and i'm sure it'll be great. Loving your plans for it Bookmarked!

Made a decision as regards wheels, hopefully picking some Saab three spokes up at the weekend for dirt cheap (ideally I would love Wellers, but they seem to go for much stronger money now than they used too. Plus I don't want to make a carbon copy of Ryan's hatch!) Just need to work out what colour to paint them, I'm swaying towards some kind of horrid bright green ;D
