I was in Denmark for 2 weeks, returning just in time for the trip to RRG17. Today is the first time I've had me, camera, laptop, and t'internet connection in 1 place hence the delay in starting this thread

Hi, Hilllman Hunter are 6x4 (and much improved by swapping to 7x5 from a Mk1 Escort or similar ) I get most of my Hillman spares from Speedy Spares, you might find they have Hunter lights in stock...

I used a plug-in harness same as @stevo3002 and it works fine - it uses the existing wiring to trigger the new (fused) relays. latching relays are only a problem for odd folk with odder VWs & bugs not a concern for normal types

my standard m16 calipers are very slightly off center (a few mm) and are working fine. mine are new calipers - yours might work better if you strip and clean them if the pistons are at all sticky.

MonzaPhil I have a similar problem. now lookinhg into 3 different options : find & fix the problem on my retro daily (possibly just needs an oil change & tappets, possibly something else) find - buy - make roadworthy - tax - "something else Retro" buy *anything* legal that will get me there (& hopefully back) Decisions, decisions...

I see lots of straw - have mice been nibbling the block? What are your plans? Suggest you count the conrods and pistons to make sure they're all where they should be before deciding on a rebuild I was offered a "good" (honest guv! ) Rootes 1725 engine last week, PM me if you need one and we might be able to do something. Good luck, pics are always welcome

forbeslongden - I sent a PM when I was working in the area for a week - got no reply. I'm now back in the North East so unless the seller wants to bring it up here for me to have a look at, "I'm out"

astranaut don't blame me - the roads were already like that when I got there iamgroot not the festival of the unexceptopnal, just passing through on a working holiday (see my "wombling" thread) Wales was fun as always, we're now safely back "North", will be "North East" tomorrow, then away for a couple of weeks holiday, before another Wales trip (via RRG)

Gardening by installments Regular readers may remember that I flat-packed a good sized concrete garage in Wales late last year, and left the concrete base in the corner of the garden. I recently had a phone call to say a hot-tub was now in place on it, and "someone" (not me ) had built a tidy wood cabin alongside. Cue arrangements for me to have a trip to Wales for 10 days of dog / cat / house sitting duties, and to fit some decking "if I get a chance". The first couple of days were fun doing tourist stuff at the beach during the day, hunting triffids in the evening, and waiting for the local builders merchant to fix their truck so they could deliver the decking timber I'd ordered. I was very tempted to make use of the hot-tub but I resisted Link for some "Before" photos forum.retro-rides.org/thread/192268/sectional-concrete-mancave-garage-northThe timber arrived on Wednesday, nicely timed to land at the same time as the thunderstorms. No a good start 2 days dodging cloud-busts cutting battens to go on the concrete base, decking to go on top, and then to take it all apart and seal it before fitting with damp-proof membrane etc. A couple of great inventions that make this type of job so much easier, "hammer though" fixings (almost a rawlplug you fit using a hammer), and a hammer to match I may be slightly biased but I think it looked good once the decking went on It looked even better once the "skirting" trim went around the edge to finish it off (well worth the couple of extra hours today to make up for the time lost due to rain) My hosts were also happy when they went to inpect it, they knew the rain had caused problems and weren't sure if I'd be able to do anything at all ! The lower walkway on the right will get the same treatment, the wood is already cut but I need time (and a dry day) to paint it and fit it. Provisionally planned to happen on my way back from RRG (at the same time as re-roofing a barn at the "triffid farm", and doing a few small jobs for one of their neighbours).

The progress is looking good When you have the headlights out it's an ideal time to do your best to protect the wings around the headlight bowls. At a minimum, I like to coat everything with some rustproofing ( I normally use wax based ) Or make some splash shields to go under the wings, to stop the mud and road spray from getting up behhind the headlights.

Just an idea - is there an easy way to make cash donations at RRG towards the forum running costs ? Some kind of "donations" point at the merchandise stall on Sunday (or in the campsite at beer o'clock ) might be a worthwhile experiment

A good start would be for you to remove the bumpers and all the XR2 plastics. They will need to come off anyway to get work done, and it will let you (or your welder) have a good look at what needs repairing and what is ok. If the front end and sills need work, I'd also be checking the rear arches carefully.
Check the condition of the floorpans / sills inside the car, loosen carpets (if fitted).
I've heard a few times that bodykits look good, but you don't know what the condition of the car is under them until you start stripping bits off. It shouldn't be too dificult to find someone to check it for you once they can see the bits of the car that are hidden now.
